Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
To understand why the vote is of questionable value you have to understand what the settlement with the NCAA requires of UND.
First and foremost it requires approval, and that approval must be binding because if its not and approval is withdrawn, by anyone, UND will have to abolish the nickname.
That vote was not binding on the Tribe. UND is going to need something from Tribal leadership and it must be binding if they are to proceed with the name.
Quote:
During the four year period, UND must garner a "clear and affirmative support for the Fighting Sioux' nickname," as stated in the agreement.
The support must come from both the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Spirit Lake Tribe, and if support is not given the Sioux nickname would then be dropped.
Also, if at any time one of the two Sioux tribes mentioned above withdraw their support, then the nickname would again be abolished.

Actually, USC's (Southern California to those of you who are uninformed) nickname demeans birth control. You really ought to take a look at the giant condoms their cheer leaders wear during the games.

I was going to suggest the "Dakotans" but I see that somebody else has already suggested it.
Of course, the "Dakotans" would probably make at least 3 other schools unhappy ... but maybe that is a good thing. When you play one of the other Dakota schools, you could accuse the fans of the other school of not being a "real Dakotans". For example, "We are Dakotans, you are not. Go North"
Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
All I can say is, I hope it is original and not some generic BS that most pro teams come up with in the last few years.
Bobcats, Thunder? Really, is that the best they could come up with?
Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
I hope UND moves to the CANADIAN LEAGUE TO JOIN THEIR HOCKEY TEAM.
p.s- was in bismarck nd at PRAIRIE KNIGHTS casino on standing rock last week.
lots of money being handed over from UND donors.
I , the NDSU donor, took home $1800 , so keep buying them off out there!!!
Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
I like the Buffs too or maybe "Fighting" Flounders.
It retains a tie to the past with the fighting part and the other part describes their transition and also has ties to the past with a description of the nickname fight.

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
The ND State Board of Higher Education has just voted to move up UND's ultimatum on a nickname change. They'll now need to get approval from the tribes by October 1st of this year or drop the nickname.

DICKINSON, N.D. - The University of North Dakota must end its use of the Fighting Sioux nickname by Oct. 1, unless it can secure a 30-year agreement with the state's two namesake tribes by then, the North Dakota Board of Higher Education unanimoulsy decided today.
It's safe to say UND's spot in the Summit League will be warmed up for them by that time if they do decide to change the nickname.
