Sources: UTRGV officials informed WAC officials they are leaving the WAC for the Southland Conference, a change that’s expected for the 2024-25 season. UTRGV finished last in the WAC in both men’s and women’s basketball in 2023-24. They are expected to owe the WAC $2 million.

I think that is a better fit for them anyway.
Lamar,Commerce,HCU,AMCC in one conference vs having to go west to Utah and California/East to Tennessee and Kentucky in Football. Makes you wonder if we’re eventually going to see an all Texas conference at some point with how many we have in D1 FCS/Mid Majors
You have:
Tarleton
Houston Christian
Abilene Christian
Lamar
Commerce
UTRGV
AMCC
UTA
SFA
UIW
TX Southern(Just including for sake of inclusion)
Prairie View A&M(Same as TXSO)
That’s a 10 school league without the HBCU’s that probably would never be in a position to join.
Maybe UT-PB gets a call too? Irdk the state of their athletic programs currently.

McFarland is back as an assistant with SFA.

From the FCS Fans Nation Facebook group (a random shared post):
The only two Division I programs in the state of Texas without football: UT Arlington and TAMU-CC. At one point they did have a football program. Is it time for them to join UTRGV and bring it back?
Conversely, there are a handful of Northeastern states' programs who used to have football and dropped it (read: New York and Massachusetts are among them).
