Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
Members of the Spirit Lake Tribe voted on the Sioux nickname and 67% approve the use of the nickname. The Sioux needs permission from both the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux tribes by November 30, 2010 or they must retire the name. Both tribal councils disapprove of the name. So members of the Spirit Lake tribe wanted the issue to be a vote of the whole tribe and 67% of the tribe approve the name, a major victory for Sioux nickname supporters. However the tribal council of the Standing Rock tribe does not want a vote. But hopefully this will change their minds. Thank you Spirit Lake Nation!!!!:)xthumbsupx

East Coast bias at its best. Sorry:o

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
Ironically this could be bad for UND's conference hopes
A negative vote would have allowed them (and the SBoHE) to drop the nickname ASAP
this could cause things to drag on for a while.....

Although I'm ready to retire the nickname (but don't think it's racist or demeaning at all), I'm pleased that it was vindicated by the Spirit Lake vote. I'd kind of like to see a Standing Rock vote come back with similar numbers, have their tribal council refuse to abide by the wishes of the clear majority of the people, and then have UND drop the nickname and let the tribal council take the political heat.

In another thread I heard one of the proposed alternatives was "Roughriders," I assume because of Teddy Roosevelt's connection to North Dakota.
Not my fight, and I know the idea of being forced to change your nickname is absolutely galling, but in view of all the circumstances "Roughriders" would be a VERY COOL nickname and would solve a lot of problems.

No doubt that jokes aren't funny if you have to explain them and maybe I have it wrong. but you are the Tribe, right? you have had issues with your name or maybe it was your mascot, right? and the topic of this thread is Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname. W&M was the first tribe that popped into my head.
:oSorry

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
It is good that the Spirit Lake tribal members got to vote.
Let's hope the Standing Rock tribal members also get to publicly express their wishes.

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
They should just change their name to the "7th Cavalry".

Yeah, that would definitely smooth everything over with the tribes. Plus, UND's in Grand Forks. The 7th Cav was based in Bismarck.

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
yeah i thought it was a W&M thread also.
(greenG, he's just talking about the use of "Tribe" in the subject line... )

Roughriders sounds cool to me too. It would be the second Roughriders school in Grand Forks, Red River HS is the other. I am sure UND would keep their official School colors though.

Your point is well taken, Fan, but I prefer to yield to the everyday Lakota who voted 67% in favor of the "Sioux" mascot, despite propaganda and intimidation by their own PC types.

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
If you have to change your name from Sioux, I would suggest replacing it with, say, the Crazy Redskin Injens. Or maybe the Squaw Men.

It wasn't Roosevelt who said it. It was either Union general Philip Sheridan or Rep. James M. Cavanugh.
Quote:
There is an anecdote told concerning Sheridan during his campaign against the Indians. Comanche Chief Tosawi, or Silver Knife, reputedly told Sheridan in 1869, "Me Tosawi. Me good Indian," to which Sheridan is said to have replied, "The only good Indians I ever saw were dead."This was then misquoted as "The only good Indian is a dead Indian". Sheridan later denied he had made the statement to Tosawi. Earlier that year, on May 28, Rep. James M. Cavanaugh said in the House, "I have never seen in my life a good Indian ... except when I have seen a dead Indian." That remark may have been mistakenly attributed to Sheridan.

Of course, wearing green & white and using Roughriders as a nickname, there might be copyright infringement problems with Saskatchewan of the CFL.

Re: Tribe votes on Sioux Nickname
I think UMass, App. State, McNeese State, Northern Arizona, Norfolk State, Southern California, Portland State, Holy Cross, and many other schools have mascots that are demeaning to whites and should be changed.
And GSU and EWU's mascots mock native American culture, too.

Homework done:
"I suppose I should be ashamed to say that I take the Western view of the Indian. I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indians are dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are, and I shouldn't like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth." These words were spoken by Theodore Roosevelt less than 15 years before he became President of the United States

Whats funny is Roughriders was suggested by Ron His Horse Is Thunder (a member of the Standing Rock Tribe and public enemy #1 to the Sioux nickname). I wonder if he knew Roosevelt said that.xlolx
