Baltimore Doubleheader: Mr. C's Game Thread, Norfolk-Morgan, UNH-Towson

BALTIMORE, MD. — One of the best things about this time of year in FCS is that the games I get to cover usually have playoff implications.

I've always wanted to do a Baltimore doubleheader, covering games at Morgan State and Towson and today I have two games that have serious playoff implications.

Morgan State hosts Norfolk State today at 1 p.m. in a game that could clear up the jumbled MEAC championship race. If NSU wins, the Spartans clinch the MEAC auto bid and finish the regular season 9-2 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Morgan State, however, still has championship aspirations at a current 5-4 and 4-2— though an auto bid is seemingly out of the question. Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M and South Carolina State are routing for an MSU victory, so those schools keep their title hopes alive.

Up the road in Towson, MD., Towson and New Hampshire are tied with Maine with 5-1 records in the tough Colonial Athletic Association as they face off at 3:30 p.m.

Having beaten Maine just last week on the road, the Towson Tigers can put themselves in the driver's seat for the auto bid with a win over New Hampshire. The Tigers close the season at Rhode Island next week.

New Hampshire follows up its encounter with Towson by hosting Maine next Saturday. Whoever constructed the CAA schedule is a genius, considering how far down in the conference standings Maine and Towson were predicted to finish.

Whatever happens today, we should be in for a great day of football in this Baltimore doubleheader.

It is senior day at Morgan State. We just had the Morgan State band play the national anthem and now the seniors and their parents are being introduced for pre-game festivities.

We also have the magnificent Norfolk State band here today, dressed to the T in those Spartan uniforms.

A lot of people ask me about what type of food is served to the press at the various press boxes around the country. Today's fare was some tasty barbecue chicken and pasta salad, with pumpkin pie for dessert. Last week we had sub sandwiches at Maine and the week before that, it was pulled barbecue at Appalachian State. I like the variety. We will see later this afternoon what is on the menu at Towson.

Norfolk State won the toss and deferred to the second half, but MSU got a 47-yard kickoff return to the NSU 48 to start things.

A dropped third-down pass cost MSU a first down and is forcing a punt. A fair catch gives NSU the ball at its own 10 with 13:16 left in the first quarter.

A nice third-down read by QB Chris Walley gives the Spartans a first down at the NSU 25.

Morgan State holds and NSU punts out of bounds to the Bears' 47 with 10:42 left on the first-quarter clock.

It looks like it is going to be tough going running the ball, but MSU just hit a 53-yard TD pass from QB Seth Higgins to Tyrone Hendrix on a deep sideline route. Hendrix and his defender seemed to get tangled, the DB fell down and Hendrix used the separation to get free for the catch. Morgan State leads 7-0 with under 10 minutes left in the first period.

NSU started its next drive on its own 27 and MSU called a time out at the 8:57 mark on third and one.

Another drop on third down is forcing an MSU punt. NSU returns the punt to the Spartan 24 with four minutes left in the quarter. Still 7-7.

A pass was tipped twice by a Spartan receiver near the MSU 30, but he couldn't haul it in. A pass breakup on the next play was flagged for pass interference to give Norfolk State a first down at the 50 with 1:52 left.

A screen pass on second and one yard was deflected at the line of scrimmage by the Bears. But the Spartans used the Wildcat formation to get the first down on the next play from Takeem Hedgeman. Hedgeman caught a pass and ran to the MSU one on the next play.

False start back the Spartans up to the six and a pass breakup makes its second down.

Nice TD swing pass from Walley with 16.7 seconds left in the first period. Norfolk State 14, Morgan State 7. 11 plays, 76 yards, 3:44 on the drive.

On the final play of the first quarter, Higgins made a real awkward pass that was deflected but was ruled a lateral when it went out of bounds at the MSU 17 for a big loss. After another incompletion, MSU has a third and 19. And Higgins is sacked at his own seven. Bad possession all the way around for the Bears.

NSU returns the punt to the MSU 29.

NSU broke out an intended reverse pass with Walley as the intended receiver, but the play was covered.

First down pass from Walley to a first and goal at the MSU nine with 13:09 left in the second quarter.

Walley made some great moves with his feet to avoid a sack and throw a second-down pass away and then was hit for a personal foul. First down for NSU at the three.

NSU fumbled on second down from the two, but the ball had already been whistled dead. Dead ball personal foul on NSU during the play puts the ball on the 15 on third down.

Walley smartly throws the ball into the ground on a blown-up screen play and its field goal time for Ryan Estep from 32 yards. Norfolk State 17, Morgan State 7 with 10:39 remaining in the half. 8 plays, 14 yards, 3:22 off the clock on the drive.

Norfolk State's switching 3-3-5 and 3-4-4 defensive sets are giving Morgan State fits. Three and out and NSU takes over at the Bear 45 with 9:24 left in the half.

A brutal hit was called a personal foul (though it look clean to me from the press box) on Morgan State, giving NSU a first down at the 30.

Horrible spot for the officials on a pass completion on third down (missed it by a yard and a half) is going to force another Estep field goal attempt, which is good from 39 yards. Norfolk State leads 20-7 with 6:49 left in the half after the 6-play, 23-yard drive that took 2:35 off the clock.

Morgan State's best offense has been kickoff returns. The Bears got another good return to their own 33.

Morgan State's Travis Davidson bounced free on a simple play inside and went 49 yards for a touchdown to make it Norfolk State 20, Morgan State 14 with four minutes left in the half. Two big plays have kept the Bears in this game in the first half. 5 plays, 67 yards and 2:39 on the drive.

Norfolk State is starting its next drive at the Spartan 27. But on third down, Walley is sacked on his own five for a 20-yard loss.

Higgins came out from under the center too soon for a fumble and was lucky to get the ball back at the MSU 47.

MSU used a wrap-around sweep on third down to pick up a first down at the NSU 36 with 1:47 left.

Near interception for Marcus Center of NSU on a nice read of a four-man seem route for the Bears.

Higgins took a huge shot from Onyemechi Anyaugo on a scramble up the middle and fumbled. NSU's Corwin Hammond on the recovery at the NSU 39.

NSU fumbled back to MSU at the NSU 47 with less than a minute left in the half.

MSU has another bad offensive series and will punt with 42 seconds left in the second period.

Norfolk State has a 179-161 edge in total offense at the half, but 102 of those yards by Morgan State have come on the two scoring plays for the Bears. Walley is 9-of-16 for 124 yards and two TDs for NSU, while Higgins is 4-of-13 for 74 yards and one 53-yard TD pass. Travis Davidson has five carries for 68 yards for the Bears, but again 49 of the yards are on his TD run. If Norfolk State keeps Morgan State from the big plays in the second half, I don't see the Bears coming back to win this one.

Victor Hairston of NSU returns the second half opening kickoff to the Spartan 39 and an offsides penalty by MSU pushes the ball to the NSU 44.

First play from scrimmage, Randy Maynes goes off-tackle for 56 yards and a touchdown to make it Norfolk State 27, Morgan State 14.

Maynes had five carries for all of six yards in the first half, but he showed his speed in racing through the secondary on that TD scamper.

Morgan State starts its first possession of the second half at the Bear 28.

Fourth down after a three and out for Morgan State and time for a punt. If Norfolk State can score here, it really will put pressure on the Bears to stay alive.

Morgan State holds in the red zone for the third time to force a 28-yard Estep field goal attempt, which is punched through to make it Spartans 30, Bears 14 with 10:50 left in the third period.

Big leaping hit by Tyrece Shepherd forces a fumble by MSU's Chris Flowers at the 20 and Marcell Cole returned the recovery to the one. Walley went in for the TD on the next play to make it NSU 37, MSU 14. In the first four and a half minutes of the second half, Norfolk State has scored 17 points to make this a blowout.

There have been two quick touchdowns in the Towson-UNH game. After a quick score by the Wildcats, Terrance West went 73 yards to even things.

On fourth and one from the Towson 44, the Tiger defense came through with a big stop to get the ball back from UNH with 7:57 on the clock.

It is Towson 14, New Hampshire 7 with 7:45 left in the first period. Just the shootout we were expecting in this first-place CAA showdown.

Since I left Morgan State, Norfolk State has added 10 fourth-quarter points to pretty much wrap up the MEAC title with a 47-14 lead. There is less than five minutes remaining in that one. The game ended with a 47-14 score for the Spartans.

UNH is running that fast-pace, Chip Kelly-type of spread thus far and is out to the UNH 46.

Tye Smith just picked off a Decker pass and raced 45 yards for a TD to make it 21-7 with 6:54 left.

First interception for a touchdown since Drew Mack scored one for Towson in 2006.

I was in the house when Chattanooga beat Appalachian State 59-56 in 2004 and many of us remember the Weber State 73-68 win over Portland State in 2007. This game could be approaching those type of marks.

New Hampshire is pretty much in a place where the Wildcats have to score every time they have the ball to keep this from being a rout.

There was also Murray State's 72-59 victory over Missouri State last season.

Mr C I was on the field for this one, never seen a game like this before. A shoot out with a running team?? F'ing great win for Towson. Dominated fro the go.

It was a fun game and a fun day. Reminded me of the App State-UTC game I covered in 2004. Chattanooga won that one 59-56. We've got to meet up at one of these Towson games in the future. It will be great to see the Tigers in the playoffs.
