University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens led by Gold Medal Winner and All-American Elena DelleDonne dropped a bomb on Rhode Island winning 89-53. Starters rested for a good bit of the 2nd half or it would have been worse. Delaware got a vote in the preseason AP Top 25, so hopefully a win to build on. Up next is a home game against #14 Penn State on Thursday.

HUGE WIN for the Delaware women's basketball team...
ESPN Recap - Delaware vs Penn State (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/recap?gameId=313210048)
NEWARK, Del. -- Elena Delle Donne had 40 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks to help Delaware rally to an 80-71 victory over Penn State (No. 12 ESPN/USA Today, No. 11 AP) on Thursday night.
The Lions (2-1) were the highest-ranked team that the Blue Hens (2-0) have ever beaten. It was also just the third victory ever over a top 25 team for Delaware, which had been receiving votes in the AP top 25.
For Delle Donne, a 6-foot-5 junior, her 40 points were the third highest total in program history as well as in her career. The total also set a single-game women's record for the Carpenter Center. She was 15 for 23 from the field.
Alex Bentley scored 20 points to lead Penn State.
Before Thursday, the previous highest ranked team Delaware beat was No. 20 Kentucky in 2006.

How the mighty have fallen indeed-what happened?
How can I sum if up briefly.
Era #1 Excellent coaching. Excellent recruiting. We earn our opponents respect.
Era #2 Excellent coaching. Disinterested recruiting. Our opponents fear us.
Era #3 Disinterested coaching. Disinterested recruiting. Our opponents fear our uniforms.
We now have a new coach with limited player talent and our opponents are salivating at the chance to pay us back for 20 years of torment. The CAA games could be really rough. But under the new coach recruiting is picking up and help should be on the way. As a sports fan you have to be able to take the bad with the good. Life goes on.

Last couple of years of Amy Ruley's rule weren't barnburners either. SDSU's AJ has been WAY up there though. It will be interesting to see how long he stay in Brookings. He has the Jackrabbits running and hounding on D. Jacks shot horrible (4-26, 0-8 on 3's) to start the game vs AR-Little Rock last night, and because of steals, D, and offensive glass, were UP 1 at half, and did win the game. Whoop the Gophs, please.
SDSU will not be playing MN until MN agrees to a home-n-home with Jacks. Given that Jacks are 2-1 on Gophs as a D-I, at MN, Gophs are afraid to venture next door to Brookings to a venue that would pack in 3K or better audience, and SDSU has a 95% win rate.

Harvard split yet another weekend encounter with Brown (L by 3) and Yale (W by 20)
Five games remain in the Ivy schedule (road series with the P's and March homestand to close out regular season). I don't think we can make the postseason with a 13-10 overall and 6-3 conference record.

Jacks lead the Summit League by 2 games with 2 to go in league play. Summit League tourney will be played for the 4th straight year in Jacks backyard at the Sioux Falls Arena.
With both the men's and women's team with a top two seed, look for the tourney to set new records for attendence.
At least until the following season when USD Yotes join the tourney mix.

With a win over Northeastern Delaware is now 26-1 and 17-0 in the CAA. Right now the Hens look set for a possible 2 or 3 seed in the NCAA tourney pending the results of the final regular season game against W&M and the CAA tournament.
Charlie Creme gave Delaware a lot of time in an article on ESPN, and makes a case that this may be the best mid-major women's BB team ever.

I like that South Dakota St. of 08-09 was a comparable for UD seeding. Jacks finished off their last home-stand in high style, routing WIU 101-61, and the two seniors, Jill Young and Jenn Sunnaborg (Sunny) both had outstanding games. Summit League finishes the regular season with FOUR 20 Win teams, one of 8 leagues to accomplish that feat. Summit League is well "up" this year, and only 17-1, 31-2 SDSU 08-09 team, is better than this year's 16-2, 22-8, SDSU WBB in the last 10 years of the Summit.
Time to gear up for the Summit Tourney in Sioux Falls, SD, starting this Sat. I would be extremely surprised if SDSU is even under a 10 pt winner prior to the league championship on Tues. All possible opponents are teams that the Jacks have fairly steadily blown-out. Even ORU was a blow-out in Brookings. Sioux Falls, for a "neutral" court, feels like home games for the Jacks.

Yes, unfortunately. All Ivy teams in sports except football can play in the postseason given their first or second-place standing in the conference.

Is that the league president's idea or every school's idea? I would think ivy league teams would like to battle for a national title.

Congratulations to North Dakota Head Coach Gene Roebuck being named Great West Conference Coach of the Year.
http://www.fightingsioux.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205393915&DB_OEM_ID=13500
University of North Dakota head women's basketball coach Gene Roebuck has been named the 2011-12 Great West Conference Women's Basketball Coach of the Year as announced tonight at the GWC Tournament banquet. In addition, redshirt freshman center Emily Evers received the Great West Conference Sixth Woman Award and three Sioux were named all-conference.
This is the second time in three years that Roebuck, who led the Fighting Sioux to the 2011-12 GWC regular-season title with a league record of 9-1, has received the Great West's top coaching honor. He received the league's inaugural award in 2009-10 after the Sioux captured the first GWC championship. Now a 12-time coach of the year, this is Roebuck's 25th and final season at the helm of the Sioux. He currently holds a phenomenal record of 712-158 overall and a 626-144 mark at North Dakota.

SDSU Jacks won their 4th straight Summit League title in a come-from-behind OT win against the #3 seed UMKC Roos. Senior Guard Jill Young was fouled with 7 second left in OT, and the 90% FT shooter nailed both to provide a 1 pt win. 'Roos (and game) top scorer missed her 8 ft runner as time ran out, and Jacks escaped to the NCAA tourney. It was the first of two OT games for the Jacks in the Summit Championships.

Even sweeter because it was vs Drexel, and they were playing as dirty as I've ever seen a team play, literally shoving and throwing elbows with intent to hurt after the whistle.

She has another year left, but the rest of the team has really stepped up as well. The hope is that the exposure Delaware gets this year and next will pay major dividends in recruiting for the future. ODU was a Women's BB powerhouse for many years through many players, and UD has the potential to do the same. Tina Martin is an excellent coach with a great record. The UD women's team has always been good, this year is just the result of all the stars aligning.
I have to figure EDD will have a solid WNBA career before jumping to analyst though.

RR is correct. I coached girls from 1990 till 2006. Sports bras are mandatory safety equipment. Anyone showing up to practice with a lacy underwire bra is sent to the bench and told not to come back until they bring a sports bra.
You don't need to see the girl without a T-shirt to know the difference.
