Grambling Supporters Want Robinson's Record Back

An FCS-related take on Joe Paterno's record and the desire by some Grambling fans, alumni, etc. to get the record back for Eddie Robinson.

If I am not mistaken, Joe Pa and Eddie Robinson were 1-2 in Division I wins, but there is another coach who actually is the NCAA football wins record-holder, right? John Gagliardi - who has spent most of his days at the NCAA D3 level.


Joe Paterno is no longer head football coach at Penn State University.

His legacy has been tarnished.

He leaves the college football ranks in shame.

Nonetheless, some former Grambling State athletes and alums believe Paterno has not suffered enough for whatever role he played or didn‘t play in an alleged child sex scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

They want Paterno’s 409 career wins — a record once held by the late Eddie Robinson — stricken from the NCAA record books.

That's just silly. Simple fact is Paterno was coach during those wins, he has the record. As far as John Gagliardi, I used to live in St. Cloud which Collegeville is a part of the metro area. He is a living legend. He has the all time NCAA record (still going).

I believe you are right, they are referring to DI wins (subdivision notwithstanding).

And Albany's Bob Ford is now the active wins leader in all of Division I with 253 wins.

How does he feel about it?

It's not like Paterno won some of those games by playing 12 men on the field, or with players in their 8th year, etc.

I never thought of that aspect of it, but the timing is pretty peculiar now that you think about it. However if I was a Grambling fan, I'd be more upset about the fact that hes been coaching from the press box the last few years and that he had been more of a figure head than a coach. I don't know much about Robinson, so I'm not sure what his last years were like and if he was still going strong up until 97

Paterno and Penn State didn't cheat to get those wins. Even though the alleged abuse cases are horrible, there's no reason to take away any victories.

I know it's just D-III football, but John Gagliardi doesn't have full contact practices or require players to do weight training.

Yeah, but so has everyone else, thats not saying too much.

What Unknown lacks in offense they certainly make up for in intangibles.
