Some FCS schools have basketball teams in action tonight. Lehigh is currently winning against St. John's out of the Big East. Liberty is down big to #19 Texas A&M at the half. Duquesne takes on #16 Arizona tonight as well.

Lehigh really gave away a huge opportunity for the big upset. Up by 16 but in serious foul trouble, the Mountain Hawks were afraid to play serious D. Still, they had chances in the final 1:30 to win, but made several turnovers. St. Johns had 33 foul shots to Lehigh's 14 or so. A 'good' learning experience for the team that should serve them well down the road.

Here is their power rankings.

Too bad Harvard can't go to the Big Dance. But since the powers that be at Harvard feel postseason basketball takes away from class time and the specialness that is amateur sports, they have to sit it out.

Where is your basis? There are no rules governing the restriction of postseason play in basketball. Only in football we feel powerless.
Remember that our women's basketball team upset Stanford back in 1998, the only time a #16 has beat a #1.

Are your pretend mid majors and they are who will get at large bids..
Also I was under the impression the IVY has the right to an Autobid in the FCS should they choose to accept a playoff bid, They just do not for their own reason and are replaced by an additional atlarge.

Big sky is usually pretty bad overall at basketball.
Sagarin has the Big Sky at 21 out of 33 conferences. The Big Sky is usually very balanced in conference play and they get good out of conference wins each season. In 2010-11 they were 23 and Summit was 18. In 09-10 Big Sky was 19 Summit was 24. 08-09 Big Sky 17 Summit 21. 07-08 Big Sky 23 Summit 20. 06-07 Big Sky 19. 05-06 17. Where among those ratings is pretty bad? They're not mid-major by any means, but those are decent consistent numbers.

Really? I'm guessing you've never played basketball if you think a nine point game isn't close? Nine points could be a close game where the winning team simply made their foul shots at the end. There were 8 lead changes in the game. UND was ahead midway through the second half.

Any basketball game with a margin within 10 points at the end is close. With all the fouling going on to gain possession, the resultant foul shots can really skew a score. I've talked to many in the collegiate game, and they view any win within the 10 range as being a very competitive game.

Typical Bison fan response. For a team like UND who is still a young team (3 FR, 5 SO, 6 JR, 2 SR) going on the road against Bradley, a MVC (the conference NDSU drools about) member, who was also 2-0 and actually lead halfway though the 2nd half only to have Bradley pull away late and with foul shots at the end lose by 9...still close IMO.

Montana at UND tomorrow night....Televised on the Fox College Sports game time 7pm CT
Where do you draw your line?
10? 12? 15? 20? 30? 40? 50? what game isnt close.
If you are losing by 9 with 30 seconds left the game isnt close.
Your gameflow on espn says UND beat bradley by 18 points, so I cant judge how out of reach it really was.

3 3pt shots and the game is tied. Bradley pulled away late in the game. I have no clue what your last sentence means?? UND beat Bradley by 18?? Huh?
I agree with this statement by ngineer:
Any basketball game with a margin within 10 points at the end is close.

I agree with this statement by ngineer:
3 3pt makes does not tie that game. Unless the other team is putting up garbage. Assuming you are hitting all your 3's. The team that was leading probably put 6 on you while you put 9 on them. You are still losing by 6 15 points later.
If you are losing by 9 with 2 minutes to go I would give you a chance. If you are losing by 9 with 30 seconds to go you lost barring a meltdown.

Unless you are playing this guy, you lost.

Who cares. Why do you care? No no seriously...why do you care if UND lost by 9 or 90? IMO 9 is a close game. If we lose by 15 to Kansas I would say we did a good job. Sorry we can't win them all like NDSU has done so far.xrolleyesx

To continue, as a fan of a team who wins a lot of games by 9 or more points, especially in conference play, it really depends on how the game has gone to whether a nine point spread is close or not. I don't know if it's a good thing or not that incoming Big Sky teams think losing by 9 is close or not.

The Sioux would stay within striking distance over the next nine minutes never falling behind by more than five, but point guard Dyricus Simms-Edwards buried two big 3-pointers late in the contest to help seal the victory.
Those treys came after Anderson had pulled the Sioux to within a pair at 58-56 with just under six minutes to play. His second trifecta stretched the home team’s lead to seven and UND could not make a late run as Bradley remained unbeaten on the young season.

Unless garbage time has the losing team put up a bunch of points. Being down 20 with 4 to go and losing by nine is not a competitive game.
That is true. I was not considering the situation of one team having a huge lead and then the opponent doing better at the end against their bench. So , you do have to check the circumstances.

They said during the game that Montana was picked to finish second in the Big Sky. UND led by 11 at the half only to piss it away and had to come back just to send it to OT. UND scored the first 10 points of OT, and even though Montana started to come back in OT actually cutting the lead to 4 UND held on. UND needs to improve on FT. They were horrible. A big win for our program and it just shows how we can be a threat in the Big Sky. UND is now 2-0 vs the BSC this season.

For the MVC it was Rashad Tucker for SIU against UNI but for Indiana State it was this forward we had back in 1979, he was ok. Little pale. It was something like Larry Bird.

Funny story that is not exactly pc. When Larry had ended his career him and magic met up in Indy for a drink and they ended up in Terre haute somehow. When magic and Larry walked into the bar apparently magic yelled "yawl serve (insert racial epitaph about African americans here)" turns to Larry, "am I fitting in here yet?"

I cried when he announced he had HIV because at that time life expectancy was very minimal. I believe it was 1991 so 20 years later he is still alive and doing well. I liked the Larry Bird/Michael Jordan McDonald's commerical....nothing but net.

Jake odum is the bane of their existence and has been for a year now...odum just had a triple double down at the old spice classic andI is that old school type of point guard...great handle exceptional passer ok scorer. Indiana state may still be a little young with their best player being a sophomore and alot of their best talent young they have to step up to get a shot at winning the valley outright.

Not many teams tougher than a 3 loss NAIA team! haha sorry, I was hoping this would be a college basketball discussion thread. Emphasis on discussion. Why is there a post for a win over an NAIA school? We all have access to these teams' schedules via ESPN, YahooSports, SportsNetwork, etc. Do people hop on the football thread and post "Northern Iowa won this week 24-17, next week we play Missouri State."? No. We talk about that sport. Do we need one post every time an Independent school takes the court? I guess. This thread is going to get rather old though with that happening. How about discussions like what is the most competitive mid-major conference? or Why is the Mountain West overrated year after year? xtwocentsx
