IRVING, Texas - Now listen up.

'Bout this time two years ago was when we told you about Patrick Crayton. Said to watch out for this kid, the small-school, jack of all trades trying to make the transition to wide receiver in the NFL as a seventh-round draft choice. Said you were going to like his story.

Then last year it was Chris Canty, the kid with first-round quality who fell into the fourth round because of a knee surgery and eye surgeries. Said you were going to like this kid's ability.

And this year, well, we give you Jason Hatcher, the Cowboys' late third-round pick who most of you apparently know nothing about since he played his ball at Grambling and since all those "draft experts" knew very little, if anything about, either, since he only played like 1½ seasons of defensive end in college.

You will like his size. He's 6-6 and is listed at 285. Bill says he's 290. He reminds of Canty, one of those guys whose body frames are capable of easily carrying

Hatcher says he'll make an impact
By Rick Herrin, Star-Telegram Staff Writer

IRVING - Some pre-draft projections described Grambling State defensive end Jason Hatcher as a developmental player.

The Cowboys see him differently, which was apparent when they drafted him in the third round. Hatcher (6-foot-6, 284 pounds) was once a tight end at Grambling and has played defensive end for just two years.

"I'm definitely going to make an impact here," Hatcher said. "Hopefully you'll see me in the rotation." ...

Jones gives thumbs up to top picks
He was pleased with the top two picks, linebacker Bobby Carpenter (first round) and tight end Anthony Fasano (second round), and is excited about defensive end Jason Hatcher (third round).

Hatcher is considered a project because he played defensive end only two years at Grambling State. But Jones said Hatcher is not "green."

Hatcher dominated when going against the other rookie prospects in minicamp, and Jones can't wait to see him against the veterans, such as left tackle Flozell Adams at the veterans minicamp June 2-4.

"I expected that because that is what we saw [on film]," Jones said. "We are pleased with the way he moves."

Former Grambling defensive end Jason Hatcher (6-6, 285) showed impressive quickness for his size. He may not be as much of a project as first predicted. In one-on-one drills, Hatcher raced by helpless offensive linemen with nice swim moves ...
