View Full Version : Other sports that your school is better than most

I was just curious to hear from some folks about what other sports does your school excel in, or should, in your estimation. Many of our schools are considered second tier to the bigger schools in our states and don't really compete with them. Personally, I think App could compete favorably against Carolina, NCSU, etc. in Cross Country and soccer. (We don't). But, I think the atmosphere and area are conducive for it. Anyone else?

Example: Delaware and Stony Brook are both ranked in the Lacrosse ranking. sxthumbsupx

ODU - crew, field hockey - don't get their fans started...

Oh, and VCU apparently has a pretty good basketball team...

Lehigh's signature sport has always been wrestling. Preseason rank of #5. Finished 8th in country last year. Fifth all-time school in the number of national championships won, behind only the 'Big 4' (Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State).

BOWLING!

SHSU Bowling became the first first-year program to qualify for the NCAAs when it did so last year. Team finished in the top 8 in the nation and is ranked No. 7 in the preseason poll. All-time, we're also 9-1 against SFA - our chief rival! :)

Women's Soccer. The rest of the SLC, including those sorry *** Bearkats in Huntsville, can suck it.

SFA didn't allow a goal in conference play until the last game of the season.

I didn't even know the NCAA had bowling, more less a poll. You have a link to the latest poll, by any chance?

Not that we're going to win any national championships (or even come too close), but I think we're fairly competitive in baseball and men's golf. There may be a women's sport or two, but I really don't pay much attention to them.

Well, we have an NCAA hockey team, which makes us better at it than the schools that don't :p

Historically, at least, we're middle of the pack nationally, with 4 NCAA appearances, and 1 Frozen Four (1990, made the national title game)

Our Women's Soccer team is a Patriot League powerhouse with 11 tournament and 10 regular season titles in 21 seasons, plus another regular season title this year. We're also the only PL school to win a game in the NCAA tournment (1-0 vs Arizona, 2004)

We once had a Baseball team, made the College World Series in 1954, and beat Southern Cal while there. Due to Title IX, and a decline in interest/quality of the team, Colgate dropped the sport after 1994

Swimming pool

Built in 1982 the Hyslop Sports Center pool is one of the finest in the nation. A state-of-the-art Daktronics video board overlooks the eight-lane, 50-meter pool with balcony seeting. The pool is the annual host of the North Central Conference and North Dakota high school swimming and diving championships. It has hosted the Division II National Championship Meet three times in 1992, 1996 and 2003.

True, but we really don't compete well on a national level in these sports. A few here and there. I think our Cross Country team finished in the top 25 poll once.

Also, has anyone seen the Capital one cup? I don't know how they award points but App somehow was ranked 29th last year.

We are a track Power House.
The women's XC team has been the best in the 30 year history of the sport winning 9 team titles and 8 individual titles. They just women the BE tourney and are ranked #1 going in to the NCAA tourney
The men's XC is not too shabby either with 3 team NC and 1 individual. They too just won the BE tourney
The women's track team has won 9 NCAA team championships and a record 28 Penn Relays Championships
The men's track team has won 69 NCAA and a record 112 Penn Relays Championships.
Villanova has had runners in every Olympics since 1948 winning 9 gold and 4 silver medals. We are a track school, plain and simple. App fans complain about removing the track but that would never happen here. Jumbo Elliot track is here to stay.

Our Basketball team isn't too shabby either. 31 NCAA tourney appearances, 4 Final Fours, and 1985 NC

Elon has usually a good baseball team that has made several NCAA tournaments over the past few years, a slightly above-average soccer team (at least in the conference), and an above average men's tennis team. Unfortunately, other than baseball, Elon hasn't really had much success in consistently maintaining a presence in NCAA tournaments for various sports

VCU has a men's basketball team that did "ok" last year :P

Delaware State has equestrian. They were in the twelve team 2011 Varsity Equestrian National Championship tournament last year, becoming the first HBCU to qualify for the tournament after wins over ranked perenial contenders South Carolina and New Mexico State. They have a very good nationally respected team. This year opponents traveling to Delaware State include Texas A&M, SMU, USC, and Ohio State.

Surprised that no NDSU fans posted yet:

The only sport I can think of that can be argued as national contenders right now is Track and Field. Both the indoor and outdoor variety. We had one girl almost win an individual national championship this summer. One of our outdoor teams (I think the women) finished top-10 nationwide. I'm only a fan of NDSU game sports (not individual meet sports), but I was interested in seeing how they did in the finals last year.

When we made the DI move, there was a lot of hope that our wrestling team could be national contenders. Hasn't happened yet. I still think this is all riding on the prospect of our wrestling team (along with maybe SDSU and UNI) getting an affiliate invitation to the Big XII. The Western Wrestling Conference will never be more than a low-level DI conference. the Big XII for wrestling opens a BUNCH of doors for us. Now that Nebraska went to the B1G, something has to happen. The NDSU program has a nice relationship with Dan Gable (he's friends with most of the team, coaches/players), one would think he could push NDSU into a championship-type of program.

Softball always gets to the NCAAs but after their Sweet 16 run in 2009, hasn't done d*ck in the 1st round.

Volleyball is as good as a DI low-major team can be, but there is a BIG jump between perennial Summit champions and B1G powerhouses in the tourney.

We had a womens golfer who did some huge freakin thing not too long ago, I have no idea what it was. If NDSU dropped the golf programs today, I wouldn't care.
