"Fresh off his third World Series title -- and second with the Cardinals -- skipper Tony La Russa announced his retirement in Monday after 33 seasons as a big league manager, including the past 16 seasons with St. Louis.
The announcement was made during a Monday morning news conference at Busch Stadium."
Say what you want about the way he managed, but, he knew how to win ball games. Will forever be a legend in St. Louis and one of the best ever in the history of baseball. My entire baseball life with the Cardinals has had him at the helm. Going to be really weird next season...

Going out on top. Smart man. I said in 2008 that Jamie Moyer should have done the same thing.

Yes, LaRussa could drive you nuts, but he certainly knew the game. A lock for the HOF. Naming his successor should be very interesting and I wonder whether that will impact Pujols' decision? I've been hoping that Ryne Sandberg with the Phillies AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs was being groomed as Manuel's replacement in two years as part of the deal in bringing him over here from Chicago. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that as I see him being a top candidate for several teams.

Eh, he may be retiring, but he'll still make sure the Cards get plenty of steroids delivered to the clubhouse. Amazing how the problem seemed to follow TLR wherever he went in MLB and no one ever thought twice about it.

Why should they? It was running rampant every where for 20+ years...If MLB wasn't going to care, why should TLR?

Because he's skated clean for 20+ years while others have gone down around him. McGuire will never make it into the Hall but TLR will go in the first ballot. The captain should go down with his ship.

It's nice to see someone ride of into the sunset like TLR is doing. Baseball is a team sport and I don't really care for when one individual is singled out like some players retirement tours are. No offense to Bobby Cox and all other players and managers that have gone out that way, but its nice to see someone just going in and doing their job.

First, we have no clue how Tony looked at steroids. For all we know he was against them. *EDIT* My bad
Second, I think you are gravely mistake if you think McGwire will never make the Hall. I think he is one of the few guys who will in this era simply because when he did it, it was "ok" and I don't believe he is ever on record lying about it all(yes I know, he had the whole Congress ordeal but never lied). Manny, Bonds, Clemens, Palmerio, A-Rod can't say that. Eventually I think the BBWAA will look it as a part of the game for this generation and will start voting guys in

He was the manager who hired Dave McKay and kept him on his staff for 25 years (1986-today). The same Dave McKay of the Athletics with the Bash Brothers who wrote a strength training book for baseball players with Jose Canseco in the 80's. He was a 1st base coach and Canseco's personal strength & conditioning coach, later helping with McGwire. There were articles all the way back in 1988 wondering if Canseco was using because from 1987 to 1988 he went from big to freaking huge under McKay's tutelage then had his 'roid rage incident fighting with a Boston fan in the 1988 playoffs. The Bash Brothers were the face of steroids and a generation that followed, but Coach LaRussa & his good friend Coach McKay were the men behind the curtains pulling the strings.
