Games at Paladin Stadium are pretty pleasant too. Easy parking right behind the stands (FOR FREE!!) and when GSU comes, we have a great BBQ company that cooks for everyone who wants to buy a ticket. I really enjoy going to games at Furman.
I enjoy them even more when they go like the one in 2002.

I respect them, but I really hate them. Furman kicked our a$$ in the 80's. A guy I played with at Watauga High in Boone played for them during their national championship. His name was Paul Craven. Very good football player. I only knocked him down once in 7 years of playing with and against him, but I did put him on his a$$ once. That is what ASU will do this coming week. Did I mention I hate Furman.

This could be a good one. Both teams are better than folks thought early on in the season, but I still like our chances in this one. This is really App's last big game for the regular season, with WCU and Elon being typically and atypically anemic respectively.

It is going to be tough for App St to bring the same defensive intensity to Greenville that they had at The Rock yesterday. That's as good as I've ever seen the Mountaineers play on D. Maybe it had something to do with this being the third time they've played an option offense this season. Not sure, but they were terrific against the run. FU runs a very different offense and the defensive keys will be different since FU throws the ball more and their running game sets up different from option teams. FU has a real chance to win this game if they can move the ball on offense and put pressure on Jackson in the passing game.

The Paladins are actually slight favorites per Sagarin, once you add in the home field advantage of 3 points. But App St's defense did look scary against GSU and Furman's offense has only been so-so recently. It's a more important game for Furman, so it will be interesting to see if App St can match the intensity level.

Good to see Forcier and Jamal Jackson in the top 9 but I think both are a bit misleading. JJ due to the extremely small sample size, Forcier due to 7 of his 17 TD's coming in one blowout win vs. Presbyterian.
In any event, 2 quality signal callers. This should be a great game.

A trap game for ASU? I don't see it. The trap game will be E-Loan. That's the one where we might let our guard down a little bit and they are not good this year but not totally helpless like the Can'ts. I think we will go into this game with a healthy focus because these guys really want that 7th Championship in a row and they know FU is standing in the way. I look for this one to be as tough as the GSU game was. I hope our D continues their great play.

I don't see it.
This is not the Bobby Lamb-type teams App State fans have gotten used to. Furman has one of the more physical teams I've seen in my years watching FCS football. I frankly don't think App will get the ball enough, nor score quickly enough to separate themselves by several touchdowns. After watching the Paladins swarm the same type spread option offense that App State runs last week, I'm encouraged about our defense to continue its stingy ways.
I'm expecting a very low scoring game on the order of what we saw when UTC and App played with both teams in the low 20s or high teens.

Furman could definitely win this game but I think they will need to score more than high teens or low 20's to do so. UTC may run a similar style now that Robinson is playing but the ASU offense is so much more balanced. ASU has more team speed and a QB that can beat you in the air. Robinson is a great athlete but he still cannot beat you with his arm. There is no way you hold Jamal Jackson to 3 passing yards. It will be a tight game, should be interesting all the way to the end.

After the last few years I am slow to predict big changes. But I do think the difference in this years team and the last few years is (1) the aggressive way the defense plays ( the blip there was GSU, not so much on being aggressive but in us not being able to stop them) and (2) overcoming adversity. Last weeks game was a good example. Defensive game. Furman up 6-0. Chat punting from deep in their territory and a rugby kick bounces off a FU players back. Chatt goes forthe touchdown. And then Furman does what it hasn't done all game. Marches down the field and scores a TD.
Now of course you can chalked that up to Chatt's inability to finish, but I will take the other view.
With that said, I agree with the previous poster. A shootout favors ASU. I will enlarge it, to say a shoot out favors ASU by alot. I am hoping for scores in the low 20 range.

I didn't think there was anyway you could limit anyone to three passing yards, quite frankly. Jackson is probably the key to the whole game. Furman got beat on the edges against GSU, and then made agressive changes (including a lot more linebacker pressure) to keep teams from getting outside on us. Wofford had little success. UTC had less.
Furman will likely put Steed on Quick all afternoon (like they did with UTC's Bradford), and essentially take away that option in the passing game. I know Quick is a great receiver, but Steed can quickly make you a non-factor in the passing game. Jackson will likely have to get his second and third options involved in the passing game. I imagine Furman will try and take away the running game and the pass to Quick and let Mr. Jackson figure out his second and third options downfield.

There's not one individual in college football that could take this man out of the passing game. It will take the full attention of two of your dbs for the entire game to hold him under 100 yards and two TD's. I'm really having trouble taking the rest of your posts seriously if this is really how you see things. Even if Quick gets held in check (by multiple players) our receiving corps is stacked. We also have the ability to run the ball and hold your offense to very few points in the red zone. I really don't think this one is gonna be close. I'll be there as Darth though. Looking forward to my first trip to the other Greenville.

Not to take anything away from Steed's ability because I do think he is a great player, but I'll believe it when I see it. Brian Quick is bigger, stronger and running better routes than I have seen out of him in previous years. Laron Scott is a 1st team All-SoCon CB but he could not handle Quick on Saturday. Making him a non-factor is always the goal but when a WR is 6-5, 220 lbs. with the leaping ability of Brian Quick, limiting the damage is usually the best you can hope for.
I truly think the only way to make him a non-factor is to harass the QB. I'm just not sure there is a corner at this level who can shut him down in man coverage.

For us to win we will need to run and pass - Jamal was way off this past weekend to many short passes that fell short to open receivers - he will need to fix this if we are going to win - it appears that a either a run or pass strickly plays into the hands of Furman a team that can mix it up should be a tough matchup - if ASU can keep it even they will be ok - but I think Furman has the edge and momentum for the moment - ASU will need to score early and keep the lead and need some turnovers to help their cause...

In Jamal's defense, at times the wind was brutal at field level. I believe that could have had something to do with where the ball was going.

We will certainly need balance on offense to win, that is for sure. I really think Jamal played pretty well. We did have 2 starting offensive lineman get injured in practice last week and had our LG and LT making their 1st career starts. JJ did not have a ton of time in the pocket on Saturday and all things considered, I will take 50% completion with 3 TD/1 INT.
Furman is on a roll right now but I'm not sure any team has more momentum than ASU. 3-game winning streak including handing the #1 team their first loss, I doubt the black and gold boys are lacking for confidence.

It's the numbers on the left column that show how much one team is favored. The predictor column is only one of the two "formulas" as you describe. So, you're saying Sagarin should only use part of his index to predict, whereas I'm saying we should use the entire thing.
If we must agree to disagree, so be it. However, after watching App play Saturday, there's NO WAY Furman is or should be favored to win. App could lose this game, but I like our chances.

Quick's a stud, and Steed is a stud… and I don't see Fowler running a junk defense just to stop one guy. If he does its a prescription to lose.
Honestly I think Furman has to make Quick and the their APP receivers get spaghetti arms. Worthy and Wade are vastly underrated they have size, speed, and they hit. I agree that Furman will not shut out the APP receivers, that's whack. Furman will have to have a great game plan, great execution, and then some luck to beat the APPS.
One more thought, I love the fact that the focus is on APP's offense vs the Furman D. Personally I give the Dins the edge on receivers matching up head-to-head. As great a player as Quick is Collin Anderson is just as great at his position (TE). With Maples and Cunningham at slot and flanker Furman has a group that is athletic, and runs great routes. The question is can FU make the APP D respect the run and bite on the play action.
APP brothers don't take our positive outlook for the Dins as disrespect for the APPS, I admire and respect Coach Moore and your program. Furman will have to play our best, and still it's a hope for a win. Furman has many holes to fill from the past seasons woes.
Give Fowler two more years and this match up will be a war.

Straight from the Sagarin page:
In ELO CHESS, only winning and losing matters; the score margin is of no consequence,
which makes it very "politically correct". However it is less accurate in its predictions for
upcoming games than is the PURE POINTS, in which the score margin is the only thing that matters.
PURE POINTS is also known as PREDICTOR, BALLANTINE, RHEINGOLD, WHITE OWL and is the best single PREDICTOR
of future games.
***
The most accurate metric is the predictor, as his blurb makes clear. Now, it is far from infallible, because teams vary in their performance week-to-week and can change over the course of the season. Even if a team is measured perfectly, it may under- or over-perform. Specific match-ups play a crucial role as well.
With respect to Quick, I doubt Steed will be put him on all game. Derrick Murray is 6'3 and could be used with safety help to try and slow him down. But the #1 way would be to pressure Jackson. It's not going to be easy, that's for sure.

Certainly our toughest remaining test. If we cannot get this signature road win, then we do not deserve a share of the SoCon and a top 4 seed. Simple as that.
Both of these teams are moving in the right direction, no way FU loses to Coastal or ASU gives up 66 to VT at this point. Regardless of who wins, you have to admire how far both of these teams have come since the season started.

Looking at the stats from the GSU Furman game, I don't see how you guys lost by 30. 400 yard of offense and only one TO , not a bad showing and I believe our Defense will be tested often. I hope we can keep up our intensity and discipline ( I believe our penalties are way down). If we can start strong and make you guys play catch up, I hope we can make you panic a bit and you guys start forcing things.

I think folks make more of the GSU game than was really there. The statistics are bizzare. Furman moved the ball well, but just couldn't convert their possessions to touchdowns. GSU was well under their average rushing yards until late in the game when their backup quarterback broke a couple of tackles for a long score. Furman threw a pick in the endzone on the GSU five yardline, gave up two points on a blocked extra point, and had a field goal blocked, so there were certainly points left out on the field. GSU soundly won, but Furman wasn't as out of it as the score indicated, I think.
At the end of the day, the players and coaches have responded well to that game. Wofford tried to do the same thing GSU had done (get outside on pitches) and were bottled up all afternoon. UTC tried to attack the edges too with no success. The staff and players made adjustments, fixed what didn't work, and have gotten after it the last two weeks. Losing to GSU the way we did might have been the best thing that had happened to us all season.

Haven't seen FU at all this year.
Based on that video^, Chatty's OL fell apart since they played us. Or it is a result of changing QBs. Everyone of their plays on that reel is a QB roll out and there was no contain for the OL. App will look completely different than that, with mostly pocket QB base and option to run, we'll see if it changes the result.
On the opposite side I was shocked to see a lot of rollout/moving pocket for FU. Actually believe that would play into Apps speed on the DL and LB. We'll see if they still do it.

Forcier isn't really a pocket passer... he's often more comfortable on the move. He is very fast- certainly faster than anyone in App's front 7 and probably most of their secondary as well- but he doesn't really pull it down and run very often. Part of the problem is that the Paladins are a run first team anyway, so there are usually a lot of defenders near the line of scrimmage.

Hence, the wide open pass over the middle. Hopefully, our defensive secondary won't bite on Forcier run threat and leave the receiver open like nooga did.

Consider also that was a highlight reel where the first team didn't score until midway through the third quarter. That is to say, there aren't many highlights in a war of attrition.
Furman isn't fancy on offense. A lot of I-formation and off tackle running. Play action passing. They rely heavily on freezing linebackers and defensive backs with the threat of Forcier breaking contain and a safety biting too hard and letting Colin Anderson behind the coverage. Not only is the play action effective for Furman, but the threat of the play action may be just as effective.

App may treat FU as we have option teams, mostly concentrating on the run and letting the CBs handle WRs. And keeping one of the faster LBs as a spy on Forcier. Don't know much about FU's WRs though, the TO teams WRs usually aren't that tough to cover 1-1.

Far and away the biggest question is whether the Paladins will be able to run block. If not, App win is certain. If the Paladins are running the ball OK, then it will be up to the Paladins defense to slow App down. I think I am more optimistic about the former than the latter. The defense has played very well 2 weeks in a row though.

A big "IF", but if the same D that played against GSU shows up it could be a long day for the FU run game.
I think inturn given FU's secondary that App has to run well to open up the pass. And a lot of that may depend on if we have any healthy RBs. Currently we know nothing of Cadet or Baker-Boney's status. Could be down to only Miller basically.

Yeah it was pretty scary to watch. Probably the best defensive performance of the year in FCS play. Two completely different offensive systems though, and GSU was the third TO team App had faced. I think it helped Furman against Wofford to have already played El Cid and GSU, horrifying though the latter was.

Yeah, I am not going to assume that type of play will transition over to a different offensive system. However, our defensive showing against UTC with Coleman gives me hope that they can flourish against a more traditional offensive system. Both of those games were at home though, we have yet to play two halves like that on the road. The last 2 weeks have me cautiously optimistic that we are turning the corner as a team but we have to prove we can do it away from KBS.
You have to think the ASU scheme will be stopping the run, containing the edges and forcing Forcier (nice ring to it!) into being a pocket passer as opposed to those roll-out passes he seems to like. Easier said than done though, this game will have a playoff atmosphere. Looking forward to the trip down to y'alls place.

Great point… Furman always has quality receivers, that is the one thing IMO that has set us apart from your traditional TO team. Furman has a NFL potential TE that has size, 6-5, great hands, has the speed and route running chops to play in the slot. Maples was good enough to plat at UT. He's fast gutsy, runs very good routes, then you have Cunningham he can beat anyone deep. I would love to see APP play man, put a speedy LB as a spy on Forcier, and cover Anderson with a 5-10 LB… again Chris has to have the time to pass. To your point I don't think APP can afford to spy on Chris, could be wrong.

What ever Apps defense does they can not allow Forcier to beat them with big plays on essentially broken plays by breaking contain and running the ball. Two years ago in mop-up up duty Forcier showed that ability and historically that type of "athlete QB" has given App fits because of the agressive nature their D. The same goes for "trick plays" like reverses and half-back/flanker around passes, fake punts and the like...App has a tendency to over committ and get caught and that's already happened against Citdogs and Sammy.
I expect a dogfight of a game with both teams playing at a high level. Apps need to win on the road and on grass to move to the next level of performance.

I don't think they would have to put someone on Forcier anyway. They will be looking to stop the run regardless. Pretty much every team approaches Furman the same way- load the box and try to stop Williams, and hope Forcier makes some mistakes. It worked for Samford. UTC slowed the Paladins down quite effectively. It may take a more creative offense against App St.

Furman does not have any burners, but a bunch of possession guys who run good routes. Forcier has been incredibly accurate so far in 2011, so Furman does not require much of a hesitation on the part of the defense to complete a pass.
In the passing game, App has to worry about two guys: Colin Anderson and Tyler Maples. Maples is a gutty receiver in the mold of Bear Reinhart who works across the middle, runs crisp routes, and finds the open space. Anderson is the big tightend who creates all kinds of matchup problems as he is really too big for most DBs, and too fast for most linebackers.
App, like most teams, will have to stop Jerry Williams. Williams is as good a tailback as Furman has had probably since Ivory or Brigham. Great balance, great vision, cuts back into open space. If he has a big game, Furman will be tough to defeat.

Furman doesn't use Forcier like the typical "running quarterback." Furman doesn't feature him in the running game much. Using a spy on him is wasting a defender.
To me, he resembles Ingle Martin in his game. He doesn't throw as much as Ingle did, but Furman relies on Forcier to make good decisions with the football, distribute it around the field, find mismatches, and take care of the ball.

Strange how things have changed. Bobby Lamb used Forcier almost exclusively as a Wildcat-type back. Did Chris become an amazingly efficient and accurate passer only in the last few months? Or was Bobby a bit too enamored with his speed (and Jordan Sorrells) to set his arm loose?

Chatty's O-Line has been garbage all year. We had 4 sacks, 7 TFL, and 7 QBH against them. Coleman never recovered from the beating he took in Boone. I'd hate to be a QB for UTC right now.
Hopefully we get Lamb (not Bobby) back at LT and can put Barnard at LG. Jamal got a lot of heat last week against the Eagles and that plays right into the hands of Furman's D.

The differences in Lamb and Fowler are many to this point. Interesting that through his first two years at Furman, the knock on Forcier was that he had a big arm and no accuracy, and he had speed but was turnover prone. Now in a different system we see that yes, Forcier has a big arm and is speedy, but he also is obscenely accurate and has been as good as you can ask for in taking care of the football.
I think Lamb always wanted to run that pure spread attack. In truth, he probably forced the issue with several of our quarterbacks who simply had different skill sets.

ASU and Furman both appear to be peaking at the right time, but ASU is use to playing in big games, has a winning tradition and it hungry to break the consecutive Socon title streak set by GSU. Our players said Saturday evening (after a HUGE GSU win) that they were, and had already been, focused on Furman. FU stadium is not a hostile environment and it'll probably be at least 1/2 Black & Gold. Plus, GSU beat them by 30 points 3 weeks ago. One of FUs bigger attendance problems lately has been ticket buyers that are no shows. I remember the 80s and that didn't happen. We have had quite a few games recently where the attendance was announced at 11K but a look around the home stands said there ain't no way.
With that said, it has been getting better. Hopefully this game will bring some folks out.

If you get there enter the main entrance and park accross from the classroom buildings close to the chapel. If those are full, the parking folks will direct you as after the classroom parking fills up, they have a pretty organized way of parking cars in each successive parking lot. Either way, it won't be that long of a hike.
BTW, All you AGS posters, if you are tailgating before hand put a sign or something, would be glad to meet you.xthumbsupx

If any game could fix that, I think this would be it. You have your old rival coming down the mountain to pay a visit with a top 5 ranking, and winning this game will (barring Elon playing the game of their lives next week) get you into the playoffs for the first time in a while.
Should be another FU/ASU classic.

Aw man, you're too kind! Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, I cannot attend the game Saturday. Alas! I must travel to Raleigh for the NC State/UNC game. Long story. I'm going to try my best to listen to the game through a phone app. I'll have to get my kids to help set that up though. NC State game kicks off at 12:30, App/Furman at 1:30, so hopefully I'll catch it by phone/radio.
Anyway, thanks for the invite! Good luck to you and your team.

I'm not sure "lopsided" can even fully describe that VT debacle. Wofford controlled from start to finish but it was not exactly a blowout, as ASU pulled to within 7 in the 4th before WC put us away with about 7 minutes to go. In any event, you are not off base in pointing out the contrast in our performances at home against those on the road.
The team appears to have turned a corner in the last few weeks, I just hope that momentum comes with us when the boys leaves Boone!

I love DP (I'm not IN love, but I DO love) but I think the Wofford game would have been different had JJ started. It's rare for this team to lose a game when they only give up 28 points. That's an indictment on the defense, sure, but a compliment to the offense of the last couple of years. If you had told me WoCo would only score 28 points before the game started, I would have felt pretty good about our chances with JJ at the helm. A loss is a loss, but I think this team is much different than the one that started the season... especially due to the amount of youth with LOTS of PT.

Agreed. Most unique season I have seen since my first at ASU 10 years ago. Jamal Jackson looks like he is going to be a special player, while DP is making a serious impact... in the defensive backfield! You just can't make this stuff up, exactly why I love college football. There is a ton of youth on this team that has been forced to grow up really fast. I think this weekend tells us a lot about how ready they are to take that next step.

Sportsnetwork's week 10 FCS preview:
No. 3 Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-2, 4-1 SoCon) at Furman Paladins (5-3, 4-2), 1:30 p.m.
Series record: Furman leads, 21-17-3
Last meeting: at Appalachian State 37, Furman 26 (Oct. 30, 2010)
What to know: The two hottest teams in the Southern Conference and longtime rivals square off; Appalachian State is coming off a 24-17 dethroning of former top-ranked Georgia Southern, while Furman has rebounded from back-to- back losses to beat then-No. 5 Wofford and Chattanooga.
Furman is the only SoCon team that Appalachian State doesn't have a winning record against, but the recent history has been dominated by the Mountaineers. Appalachian State has won six straight meetings, including a 52-27 score the last time it visited Furman.
The star power is on the Mountaineers' roster, including receiver Brian Quick, who may be the best NFL-ready prospect. Already with 734 yards and eight touchdowns, Quick has been the go-to-guy in the passing game - which included a game-winning touchdown grab last week against Georgia Southern.
Prediction: Appalachian State 23, Furman 20

The Wofford game may have been different if Kimbrough had been playing too. He was an absolute monster in the middle against GaSo. That is usually the case with that style of offense, it's a slow death and the possessions take a long time. Both of their scoring drives in the 2nd half took over 6 minutes. Did your study of revisionist history reveal that ASU missed 3 field goals in that game? The score could have actually been closer than 28-14, not that it matters. An L is an L.

App is a different team on O and D now than what they were. Woof got almost 400 yards, GSU got 200. A TO team to me can be very inconsistant, we may have gotten GSU on a bad day and FU may have gotten Woof on a bad day. All will be figured out Saturday, but I believe our play calling has improved greatly on both sides of the ball and I trust it. I wouldn't have said that 4 weeks ago.

Watch the Georgia Southern game to see how much we missed Kimbrough against Wofford.
Y'all should feel confident since you beat Wofford. I understand why y'all want to focus on that game. Big win. But, you also lost to Coastal Carolina. Do you think y'all played just as well against Coastal as you did against Wofford? I'm going to assume that you do not. Same thing with App fans thinking we've improved quite a bit since we played Wofford.
Went from Wofford rushing for 388 to holding Georgia Southern to 135. Quite an improvement.

You're right, I mean, the performance against GSU was tremendous. It's all the more impressive when you consider the Wofford game. Sure, App could have scored more, but Wofford could have as well... they just totally dominated that game in a way the final score doesn't really show. For App's defense I think it was just a bad day and I see pretty much no chance of a repeat this weekend. I just made the original comment because trying to explain that one away is akin to a Furman fan minimizing the GSU beatdown (which, in fairness, a couple Furman fans have done).

I may have been one of those FU fans, so I will defend myself. I don't think you can minimize the beat down we took there mainly because we just couldn't stop them. But if I was one of those I will clarify. and as I said before woulda coulda shouldas don't mean much. Making one of those FGs in the first half and getting that touchdown at the end of the half would have made it a much more interesting game and could have turned the game in a different direction. Not necessarily one that we would have won, but one that would have looked more competitive. I don't think the winner of the game turned on a play or two. But I do think a different outcome on a play or two would have made the game look a lot closer.
with that said, it didn't happen and so it was a beat down.

At the end of the day, the argument is circular. App fans want everyone to believe that their loss to Wofford was an abberation and they have "turned a corner." Furman fans make the same argument regarding Georgia Southern.
Look, did Furman play well against Georgia Southern? No. Was the score probably more one sided than the statistics suggest it should have been? Yes. Is there a difference in playing the #1 team in the country at home, or having to play them on the road? You betcha.

App fans may just not know what if anything FU changed between GSU and Woof? Anyone enlighten us? Was there changes on scheme/etc, or just better play?
For App we loosened play calling on Offense, changed QBs, seemed to blitz more/properly, and got the ILB (Kimbrough) back in the lineup (as Woof got to run at a Fr ILB that hadn't seen the TO before). That was our differences between that lose and now.

I think the main lesson is "any given saturday," not to be trite. App has a good coaching staff with extensive experience against the triple option. Against Wofford, they struggled, against GSU, they dominated. A player or two doesn't explain it either. It's just football. Pointing out Wofford-App and GSU-Furman isn't to say those games prove something negative about the loser; rather, the point is that good teams can have a bad day. You just want to have enough good days to make the playoffs.

You should really enjoy the atmosphere. Its Wofford with ten more fans. General admission seating. High school stadium. High school concessions, and a guy ridding around the field on a horse. But be prepared for the intimidating FU chant.... if they score!
Thankfully ASUs days are numbered playing these little private schools with a chip on their shoulder.
They have no athletes that can cover ASUs receivers. For heavens sake, Bobby Lamb recruited most of them. Its their superbowl though. They will play hard.

Georgia Southern beat us on the edges. Got nothing inside, and was able to utilize their passing game at will (often to wide open receivers). The game plan certainly appeared to be to force GSU outside to the edges. Did that well enough, but really looked like we were getting chop blocked three and four yards downfield giving their speedy backs open space.
Against Wofford, Furman appeared to bring more cavalry. Same gameplan, but brought linebacker pressure and got off blocks easier. Furman did not shut down the inside game as they did against GSU, but were far more successful against the pitch game. Wofford was put into far more obvious passing situations which, of course, is not their strong suit.
Offensively we moved the ball fine against Georgia Southern, and put up more offensive yards than App did against the Eagles, in fact. Against Wofford we appeared to move our offensive line splits a bit wider, forcing their tight 3-4 to expand a bit. Furman has a distinct size advantage on the ends with their two big tackles, and those guys more or less dictated the game. I think Furman was stopped for a loss maybe twice the entire afternoon (once when Forcier wasn't ready for the snap and dropped the ball).

"Downtown" Travelers Rest is 2 miles from Furman's campus while downtown Greenville is 5 miles from campus.
What's so bad about TR? I enjoy going to Furman they let visitors tailgate within a few hundred yards of the stadium. I do wish they'd upgrade facilities on the visitors side though.
It's a local thing I grew up behind the Furman Golf Course, one side of the road went to TR, the other side Berea. I went BHS back in the day… and of have times changed. TR is a beautiful community Berea IMO not so much.
I will say that downtown Gville is a big draw for the Furman students, and I hear a highlight for recruits visiting.

Funny.
-Your field has a track around it. Not unlike my high school.
-Furman has the best DB in the conference. He was recruited by Bobby Lamb, who was, by most accounts, an incredible recruiter.
-Furman's only "Super Bowl" is the National Championship, which is its goal every year.
-ASU is in a great place right now. It gets to compete for a National Championship. But I suppose being a lower-level SunBelt team is the ultimate goal. Especially if it means no longer getting beat by little private schools.

At the end of the day, the argument is circular. App fans want everyone to believe that their loss to Wofford was an abberation and they have "turned a corner." Furman fans make the same argument regarding Georgia Southern.

And certainly not because we're tired of getting beat by Furman or Elon. xlolx

First off, I completely disagree with the post you are responding to. I could care less about the size of schools we play against as long as they field a good football team, as Furman typically does. I enjoy the rivalry and will miss it if/when ASU moves to the FBS.
However, why the hell does everyone keep trying to tie us in to the Sun Belt?! It is not going to happen. The Sun Belt already said they are not looking at FCS schools. Our feasibility study revealed that we already generate more revenue as a SoCon member than any member of the SB. There is zero incentive for ASU, as there would be no revenue or exposure added and the travel would be insane. I know the Sun Belt sucks and it makes for a nice little jab, but the statement is completely false.

Furman fans also make the argument regarding Samford and Coastal Carolina.
Two realities:
1) It's tough to win out the Southern Conference. With only a few exceptions, even the SoCon champ will run into a trap game, put out a poor effort, or just get plain beat.
2) Furman is a team in transition. This is still the case. Which means that it's very possible that Saturday will be another day of growing pains for the Paladins. The wins over Wofford and UTC were encouraging, but weren't enough to prove that "we're back." But a win (or a really solid effort) against ASU will help get us to that point.
I really like the direction that Coach Fowler is taking this team, especially defensively. I just hope that my fellow Paladin fans can be patient if we're not quite there yet.

I think it's coming from speculative articles that linked ASU and the SunBelt. That's enough fodder to have fun with, which is all the comment was meant to be.
ASU has a really good thing going in the SoCon. I think it's good for the league and good for the school. Unless the Big East or ACC rolls out the red carpet, I would be really surprised to see App actually move on.

There was an blog article on the Savannah newspaper's website right after the GSU game this week. The author was talking about how the thought ASU, GSU, JMU, ODU and a few others should create a new Sun Belt Conference. I assume that's what he is referring to but as he said, it is all speculative. Every official release from both ASU and the Sun Belt have indicated that this is not going to happen. Really no benefit to either side, as the travel costs for all their current members would increase dramatically as well as ours. Not to mention, it would be a lateral move at best in terms of competition and exposure for our athletics.

Just google "Appalachian State Sun Belt" and you'll find several. Again, all speculative.
C-USA would obviously be a better fit, with some natural rivals, but I'm betting we'll see a shakeup there soon, as the Big East continues to grasp at whatever it can get. It wouldn't surprise me to see ECU make a move.

Furman's quarterback is better than any on the Florida roster. I say FU > UF and runs the table to the FCS title!
The App fans think they have this in the bag. Well, Mitch McGrath, who isn't even Furman's best linebacker had 4 sacks and an interception, a fumble recovery, and forced fumble in their last win. They are going to stymie App's running game, while Steed and the Furman DB's run all day to prevent the Deep & Quick.
Anything less than a 2 point FU victory would be a surprise to me.

App State's rushing average is, indeed, the most amongst SoCon team that utilize the forward pass. But come on, they averaging what, two yards a game more than Samford, and twelve more than Furman? And that's even counting home games against two absolutely putrid teams. Clear dominance in that category.
Furman gives up yards, but they are stingy with points. Furman has played eight games and given up 22 touchdowns (second in the conference in that category). That even includes the debacle against Georgia Southern where they gave up six. So, against teams not named Georgia Southern the Furman defense is allowing 2.2 touchdowns per game.
Frankly, it matters little to me how many yards we give up between the goal lines. When the rubber meets the road, teams have a hard time finding pay dirt.

Look, did Furman play well against Georgia Southern? No. Was the score probably more one sided than the statistics suggest it should have been? Yes. Is there a difference in playing the #1 team in the country at home, or having to play them on the road? You betcha.
GSU blew Furman out because because of some blown opportunities on offense (bad execution, overthrowing open receivers, etc.). Also, Furman went into desperation mode late to try and get back in the game and GSU ran away with it with a very talented backup QB came in and added points.
Furman's offense reminds me of GSU's last year...good but clumsy. If they minimize those mistakes I think they'll get the win.

I think you nailed it. The offense has looked very good in some games and inconsistent at best in others. One of the things I hope for (and even though the passing game wasn't dead on during the GSU game) but am not counting on is if we can't run at the start, that we attempt more passes earlier. We can't wait until we are behind to start passing to catch up. In fact, I would like to see us be a little more pass friendly at the start of the game just to keep ASU guessing. I am not confident that we can pound it up the middle or even run around the edges with out a legitimate threat to throw the ball.

Let me clarify. There is a difference in being pass happy and throwing occasionally. We average about 11 to 15 passes a game. When we are behind like Samford we throw 35 times. Typically what we have done is come out and run period. Nothing wrong with that if it is working. I would simply prefer on the first series (or maybe the second series) that we throw a pass before third down. Just to keep you thinking.
I in no way want us to be "pass happy"

I don't think you'll see the same approach. Coleman's a great QB, but when he's in the game, UTC has zero running threat. That is to say, an opposing defense can go for broke on the passing game.
Furman's a different animal. Coleman is a better passer than Forcier, but App is going to have to deal with the running game first. In my opinion, the only guy on Furman's offense that can single handedly beat you is Jerodis Williams. App can't afford to sell aout against Forcier and risk their pressure running right by Williams. They will have to deal with the running game first, get a lead, and then come after Forcier.
If the first 7 games of the season are any indication, Coach Fowler is going to try and establish the inside running game come hell or high water. You won't see Forcier drop back until Furman needs to pick up big chunks of yards in short order. App fan's heartburn should directly correlate to how many times #30 carries the football.

And to be honest with you that is what gives me heartburn. with that said I am in no way saying I know better than the coach but I watched us beat our heads against the Samford defensive line to no avail and then finally came out passing after they had the lead. I listened while we did the same thing at CCU. The chatt game was fairly similar with the difference being I think Coach had supreme confidence in the D to keep us in the game.
No doubt, ASU has no chance...absolutely NO CHANCE. I'm glad I couldn't make this game, going to WoCo this year was bad enough. I don't think I could handle the absolute beat-down we're about to receive at the hands of the Christian Knights. Thank you for removing all doubt from this game.

And goodbye to Appy! We are all anxiously awaiting your game against Louisiana-Monroe next fall.

App's defense was great last week. If all FU did was run, I would say they would have no chance. Fortunately FU can throw it. Just sayin'
So could Chatty with Coleman. Hopefully our D can repeat the performance against Chatty. Of course, we also have to hope that the offense doesn't give us a repeat performance.

You Appies are funny. You guarantee a 40 point App win, and then when a Furman fan says "wait a second, we aren't your little sister out there" you start with the "you're right, we have no chance."

Just dont underestimate App's run D, and defensive speed. It should be interesting. Chattanooga and Furman are the games that make me most nervous this year, Chatty was at home, FU, is not. This game is huge for both teams.
The defense is certainly solid. No questions there. Just adressing the point of bringing pressure on Forcier, which I tend to think App will not do until they have a comfortable lead.

Funny how that little private school owned a 21-11-3 record against you only about 5 years ago, even funnier is that we will own you again starting this Saturday, come on down, you will be a witness :)
