Being a proud Philadelphia fan (most people don't properly understand booing and hence Philly's poor rep outside of the local area) I hope we can do the country proud by booing this guy from the moment he steps off the plane. I almost want Bonds to tie Babe Ruth's number here so that we have the booing forever associated with his "acheivement" - much better than those sell-out San Fran fans who blindly continue to worship this guy - are there any fans out there worse than San Fran fans? Sell outs, everyone of them.

Question- What are you Barry haters going to do when he passes Ruth?
Personally, I'm going to ignore it.
For the record, I still consider Babe Ruth the single season 154 game HR champ and Maris the 162 game champ and never recognized McGwire and his andro-using (and allegedly whatever-else using) self to be the single season king.
Its very difficult to compare players from different eras since the eras are so dramatically different. There are some (and I'm not one of them) that would argue that Ruth is the all-time HR champ and not Aaron because Aaron had expansion, smaller parks, better technology, more HR's in general in his era and a bunch of other mumbo jumbo that is not the fault of Aaron. Others would argue that train travel, segregation, and pitchers that stayed in (and tired) for a full game were to Ruth's advantage. I'm in the camp of "Timing is everything in life" and so say with no hesitation that Aaron is the all-time HR champ.
The difference between Aaron's "advantages" and Barry and McGwire is that Bonds and McGwire allegedly have chemically enhanced their bodies to be able to do these things. As a parent, I don't want my kids to think that its ok to take short cuts to improvement and that's what the currently ballplayers are allegedly doing. The more that Barry and McGwire are villified for their actions, the better off our children will be, and I am proud to be a part of that villification.

I don't think he will pass Henry Aaron, but he will pass Ruth. I don't think he has any desire to pass Aaron, but I think it is seething in his gut to pass Ruth. I personally think Josh Gibson is the HR king, with 902. NO ONE will ever reach that record. However, his record will not be respected or considered because he did it in the Negro leagues. For the record (and for those that will say "not against Major league players and not in Major league parks"), Josh Gibson played for the Homestead Grays in Washington, DC. Their home park was Griffith Stadium, the same home park as the Washington Senators (before RFK). The pitching he faced in the Negro leagues was widely regarded as just as good as MLB players.

Bonds can portray himself the victim in any manner he wants. He's no Henry Aaron and he hasn't had to put up with 1/100th of what Aaron had to go through in his personal and professional life.
Racists dogs will always exist in some small minority but they don't speak for the vast majority of people who consider themselves baseball fans. And those fans who have one centilla of respect for MLB tradition will continue to root against Bonds as he passes the Babe on his way to Hammerin' Hank's HR record. Why? Because they believe Bonds to be a cheat, plain and simple. It's got little to do with race or Barry's personality.
Does anybody think Sosa, McGuire, Palmero or Bonds are going to get into the Baseball HOF in our lifetimes?

Some think Gibson may have been the greatest player to ever wear a professional uniform. Satchel Page called him the greatest hitter he had ever seen and that's good enough for me.
It's not lack of respect that will prevent Gibson from being considered as Baseball's All-Time HR King by historians. The problem is that we'll probably never be able to accurately quantify his accomplishments in the same way we can guys who played in the MLB. There's no single official compliation of NL records.
Without question, Gibson faced quite a few pitchers with ML talent but some of the statistics credited to NL players resulted from any sort of game teams played, including exhibition games and barnstorming games in which the players played against the locals. Certainly the opposition they faced in many of those games were not ML talent. It can't be verified that Gibson ever hit 900 HR, much less 800 or even how many of them came against bona fide NL pitching.
Suffice to say, Gibson was one of baseball's greatest but he'll never be considered its HR King. Sad.

On point. Hank Aaron is a great man. Barry Bonds is not, plain and simple. Not that Barry isn't a good player; before his head started growing, he was still one of the best players in the majors. But he made a conscious decision around the time of the McGwire-Sosa home run race to start using enhancers because he saw that was where baseball was going.
He'll pass Ruth, but if he passes Aaron, I will be furious.

Yes, but his decision was done with the tacit approval of MLB's hierarchy, just as they were aware of what Sosa and McGwire were doing. The real guilty party here is the Commissioner and his cohorts. This could all have been easily avoided with ANY type of leadership.
I also agree with the sentiment should Bonds try to pass Hammerin' Hank.

I have never met a serious baseball fan that doesn't respect Josh Gibson. He has been respected for a long time, in fact. Bill Veeck said about him: "If you ever let him play in a small place like old Ebbetts Field or the old Fenway Park, Josh Gibson would have forced baseball to rewrite the rules. He was, at a minimum, two Yogi Berras."
Gibson was a mammoth of a man with fingers the size of full-grown bananas. He looked as big as guys like Frank Howard and Frank Thomas. He had one of the most powerful and fluid swings of all-time, and his homeruns were recorded primarily in parks with pitcher-favoring dimensions. He would have hit more homeruns, but he played in a lot of fenceless parks where outfielders played him at 400 feet or more. He has a career .426 in recorded at bats against big-league pitching. He was only the second player from the Negro leagues to be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame. He hit one of the longest homers in Yankee Stadium history, a shot traveling almost 600 feet.
His homerun total isn't as high as 902, though. He did a lot of playing in semi-pro, South-American, and independent leagues (The Babe's total is higher than 714 too, if you count the exhibition games, all-star tours, barnstorming, and winter league shots he it.)
Even Gibson's Negro League numbers are hazy, and subject to memory as much as official records. His 75 and 89 homer seasons have been refuted by some, but others contend the numbers are legit. Most of his exact statistical totals are subject to debate.
Clearly, he is one of greatest hitters in baseball history, and possibly the greatest ever. There's no telling what he'd have done if he had lived past 35 and played in the Major Leagues (where a second-string Negro League outfielder named Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and won rookie of the year at age 26).
Then again, the fact that Bonds is chasing Ruth and Aaron rather than Gibson isn’t a sign of disrespect – it’s just an MLB-to-MLB comparison that remains steady in the minds of fans. Nobody is captivated by the possibility of Bonds reaching 868 (not that he could) and catching the official career homerun king, Japan’s Sadaharu Oh.

But it also lists seasons in Santo Domingo and Mexican Leagues. Everybody's HR totals increase if you count all the homeruns they ever hit anywhere (Babe, for instance hit 729 counting World Series homeruns.) The questions with Gibson are when to count and what to make of a wide number of mostly un-verifiable stats.

Wait though. There's a lot of blame to go around here- the owners and their puppet commissioner, the players and their union, most of the media and, yup, to a smaller degree, the fans.
It's safe to assume that this entire Roidball Era will not be judged favorably by historians a half century from now. However, I really don't see how the records set over the last decade can be officially asterisked or eliminated. I'd imagine that people will look at the HR and pitching records as dubious, as they should.
Aside from the century of racial segregation, this is probably the second worst black eye baseball's had to endure. Sad thing is that it didn't have to be that way. But we're likely to have more scandals so long as the owners insist on running the game into the ground and as long as we let them.
Baseball's first act of penance should be having the owners and players' union come together to hire a commissioner neutral to both parties. The new leader would be paid by both parties and provide ultimate oversight to and policing of the game. The commish would hire his own staff and league commissioners. Somehow there also needs to be a panel of fans with voice and direct involvement in the decision-making process. I'm not encouraged by the lack of response so far.

However, there have been a LOT of people who have hated Bonds for YEARS for "offenses" that other white players have committed and have been largely ignored by the general public. The best example I can give of this Mark McGwire. He was just as much of an arse to the media and to fans as Bonds is considered to be, but, until the congressional hearings, he was looked upon as a hero. Bonds has been hated LONG before steroids became an issue.

Mcguire was an azz. What saved him during the run for 62 HR's was Sosa. Sosa was such a likable guy, their race pulled Mcguire into some portion of likability. Additionally at that time most people didn't know or didn't want to know about steroids in baseball.
The fact that Sosa and Mcguire have, in effect, hid from public view since the steroid issue has hit big time, while Bonds has continued to play and chase records while this issue is boiling has all added to the heaping of distain upon him. IMHO his being an azz is, or should be, a non-issue.
If Mcguire was continuing to play after his embarassing display in front of Congress he would be getting loads of crap heaped upon him too and rightfully so.
