HUNTSVILLE — How did the other Rose Bowl get started ... the Black Rose Bowl between Sam Houston State and Lamar? There has been mystery around this rivalry for 23 years.

We can say that when SFA was beating Texas College 92-0, they just needed to work on their QB/WR chemistry, OLine, or they're QB's arm needed to stay warm. Ah ok, I get it. That's definitely not padding the score...

Sophomore Richard Sincere rushed for 102 yards and a 40-yard touchdown and caught a 77-yard pass for another TD to lead Sam Houston to a 66-0 shutout of the Lamar Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Eliott T. Bowers Stadium.

The 66 points represented the second highest score for the Bearkats in a Southland Conference game. Sam Houston scored 69 against Nicholls in 1999.

The Bearkat offense rolled up 559 yards including 382 rushing and 177 passing.

Keyshawn Hill rushed 14 times for 135 yards and a touchdown, all in the second half.

HUNTSVILLE - No. 6-ranked Sam Houston State scored on six of its nine first half possessions and held Lamar University scoreless for the first time this season as the Bearkats coasted to a 66-0 win Saturday afternoon at Bowers Stadium.

Lamar, who has lost four straight games, falls to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in Southland Conference play. Sam Houston State improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in SLC play. The Cardinals return home to host Stephen F. Austin next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Provost-Umphrey Stadium.

The Cardinals entered the game averaging 383 yards per game but were limited to just 98 total yards on 55 plays by a stingy Bearkat defense. SHSU had little trouble moving the ball, rushing for 382 and passing for 177 for 559 total yards. The 66-point margin of defeat was the second largest in school history, trailing last season's 68-point margin at SFA (71-3).

"We got it handed to us today," said LU head coach Ray Woodard. "They were much better than we were, and we picked the wrong day not to play well. I figured we were going to have a tough time anyway. We were going to have to play our best ball even to have an opportunity, and we didn't even come close to that. I have to give Sam Houston a lot of credit."


It was an inauspicious start for the Cardinals as Bearkat quarterback Brian Bell hit Richard Sincere on a 77-yard scoring strike on the game's first play from scrimmage.

"It was busted coverage from the coverage we put in since the first day," Woodard said. "Poor coaching on my part, I guess. When you play them, you're always looking for the run more, but we just didn't play it properly."

This should tell you enough... the guys that are SHSU's #3 and #4 running backs combined for 24 carries...

Keyshawn Hill had 14 carries for 135 yards (9.6 ypc)
Ryan Wilson had 10 carries for 88 yards (8.8 ypc)

We also saw 4 carries from Vicent Dotson (#5 on the dpeth chart) and Michael Buse (probably #6).

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Richard Sincere made a 40-yard run for a touchdown and caught a 77-yard pass for another to help Sam Houston State steamroll Lamar 66-0 on Saturday.

Sincere was one of four players to run for a combined seven touchdowns for the Bearkats (8-0, 5-0 Southland). Tim Flanders led with three, Ryan Wilson ran for two and Keyshawn Hill one. Hill led the game in rushing with 135 yards while Sincere ran for 102. Wilson added a short touchdown catch in the first quarter.

The Bearkats finished with 559 yards on offense and held the Cardinals (3-5, 1-3) to just 98.

Brian Bell completed 5 of 8 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns for Sam Houston State. Doug Prewitt completed 5 of 15 for 46 yards for Lamar.

Craig Alaniz added a field goal for the Bearkats.

Yea, the Kats did everything they could to slow down the scoring but if they can't stop the runs up the middle that is a "you" problem. No coach, ever, is going to take a knee all four downs and just give you the ball.

Flanders Breaks No Records, Scores Three TDs in One Half of Work

On the loss: We got it handed to us today. They were much better than we were. And we kind of picked the wrong day not to play well. When you don’t do things right against a good football team, that’s the result. I figured we were going to have a tough time anyway. We were going to have to play our best ballgame of the year to have an opportunity. We obviously didn’t come close to that. I have to give credit to Sam Houston. They just outplayed us and out played us in every phase.

On what you tell players when the game gets out of hand: Just try to tell them to play with class, play with character, keep fighting. That’s about all you can do in those circumstances. Nobody came over expecting this. But you live another day. You’ve got to move on, learn from this and move on. We’ve got a team coming in that we really want to beat this week in Stephen F. I’ll let them feel sorry for themselves on the bus ride home and we’ll go to work.

On Bevil’s injury status: He could have played at some capacity but he wouldn’t have been 100 percent.

On Jeremy Johnson’s injury: He got the wind knocked out of him. A little sore ribs. But he was throwing the ball all over the place.

On Oden’s ankle injury: He tried to go this week. He couldn’t go. We just didn’t want to let it out before the kickoff. Hopefully he’ll be back. He kind of played on it the second half the week before and it just got worse. He needed some time off.

On the impact of Oden’s absence: I don’t think if we’d a had Anthony it would be much different. It wasn’t like there was any one guy getting in our backfield. It would have been nice to have him. Anthony wasn’t the difference. Andre getting hurt wasn’t the difference. Just one player wasn’t the difference. The difference was Sam Houston outplayed us all over the field.

On Sam Houston’s defense: They blitzed a lot. The biggest problem with it is the man coverage behind it. They’re able to bang our receivers around. We’re not able to throw the ball on time because we don’t have open receivers. It’s a combination. The better they rush up front the more confidence they’ve got in playing man. They’ve got a good scheme. They haven’t done it like this to everybody, but they put up a lot of big points and they shut a lot of people down. They’ve got a good football team.

On if the lopsided loss hurts the players’ pride: I’m sure it does. It hurts mine a little bit. You take 20 points off the board, it’s still a butt-kicking in my opinion. There’s not much difference in it. We didn’t play well. That’s what happens when you don’t play well. They had a lot to do with that. I just don’t want to say it was us. Good teams have a way of making you look bad. They played well and we didn’t. We’ve just got to move on.

On if this reminded him of the 71-3 loss last year at SFA: Not really. Believe it or not I thought we competed better today. I think we’re closer than we were last year coming out of that game. I feel about the same after the loss after that game. I feel we still have a lot of good football left to play. We’ve got a lot to do. We’ve got to just go home and go to work.
