Really...??? This just seems like a mess waiting to happen...
One of the reasons the Big East may be holding off on any expansion announcements about potential new members is that it is considering a plan that would create a nation-wide football conference incorporating between 28 and 32 teams in four divisions from Conference USA, the Mountain West Conference as well as the Big East.
According to sources from those conferences, the plan was devised as a way that the Big East could ensure its place as one of the six conferences receiving automatic BCS bids.
The document, which was obtained by The Globe, reveals an alternative plan which would help the Big East maintain its AQ status -- automatic qualification -- but also provide access to the Mountain West and Conference USA, who hope to gain such status.

I agree. I could see a Big East / C-USA merger, but including the MWC seems like way too much.

The MWC add is mostly about bringing in Boise State, am I right? And also limiting travel to make many partners happy...
Though what will eventually happen if this league comes about, the 'power group' will split away from the mediocre ones. Remember the MWC forming from the WAC?

Pete Thamel of NY Times is saying this is not true... seemed a bit much.
Big East is not considering the mega-merger plan reported earlier today. They haven't even seen it. Focused on growing to 12.

According to CBS Sports, it is the MWC and C-USA behind this - trying to keep the Boise States, Houstons and Central Floridas together where they are...
You thought Big Country was big? Wait until you wade into the details from a consortium that would include more than a quarter of all Football Bowl Subdivision schools.
Under the plan being circulated by the Mountain West and Conference USA to FBS administrators, those two conferences would hope to join forces with the Big East in a grouping of 28 to 32 schools in football only. The Big East is still pursuing a 12-team football league.

It is back on the table... what?!!?
Commissioners from the Mountain West Conference and Conference USA are scheduled to meet with the head of the Big East Conference on Wednesday to discuss the formation of one 28- to 32-football team super conference to try to gain automatic Bowl Championship Series status.
The Mountain West and Conference USA already have agreed to merge by either next year or in 2013. The Big East has automatic BCS status, but is in danger of losing it after 2013 and has been exploring adding teams from the Mountain West and Conference USA in an attempt to salvage it. But the two Mountain West members face hefty exit fees should they leave -- Boise State up to $21 million and Air Force up to $9.6 million -- that could dissuade them from jumping to the Big East.

San Jose State will be IN if give opportunity to get in this one...
College football expansion is in the news again, and this time San Jose State's involved.
The Spartans are part of a proposed 32-team mega-conference that would be created by merging the Big East, Conference USA and the Mountain West.
SJSU and two other teams from the Western Athletic Conference, Utah State and Louisiana Tech, would be invited as football-only members.
And if invited, the Spartans almost assuredly would accept.
"We absolutely look favorably on the opportunity to be a part of the mega-conference," athletic director Tom Bowen said Monday.

Unwatchable.
What needs to happen is all of the big boys need to stay put, all the little guys create a "new FCS" type conference, and all of the have nots of the FCS get banished to division II. I'm sorry, but if you can't get 5,000 people to show up to your game, you don't need to be playing D-I football.
