When I was flying into Tri-State Airport in Huntington (HTS) on Feb. 28th, there was a Warner Bros. jet there. It was then I learned of the movie plans. My mother told me, on a tight young family budget (I was 8 then) with two other younger brothers, she still scraped together $25 to send to Marshall back then. There is an article on the tragedy & movie (set for December release) in today's (May 1) USA Today.

A few years ago, ESPN and West Virginia Public tv did 2 different documentaries on this story and they were both pretty good. I hope the movie does things accurately.. They should change the name of the movie though to "Thundering Herd"

If you've ever played Marshall, you probably won't ever get that "We Are Marshall" chant out of your head. I think it fits.

I've always assumed this tragedy was the reason Marshall left the MAC and joined the SoCon, and eventually I-AA. Does anyone have anymore first hand knowledge about that?

In 1969, the university's athletic program, facing a number of scandals,
(144 violations) fired both its football and basketball coaches and was suspended from the MAC (Mid-American Conference) and from the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The university rebuilt its athletic program over the next several years, and in 1977, the university joined the Southern Conference.

It was in 1970, the airplane crash claimed the lives of 75 people (including the entire coaching staff and 37 members of the Marshall football team)

Marshall's '96 season was marred by more graft and corruption this poster won't get into.

Again in 2001 the Herd was penalized again by the NCAA for breaking the rules. The NCAA suspended 14 Marshall athletes for improperly receiving extra work benefits. The violations involved 12 football players and two men's basketball players, was made Thursday by the school, two days before the Herd opens the season at No. 1 Florida.

According to the NCAA, two football players sat out one game; 10 football players missed three games; and the basketball players missed 30 percent of the season.

These are examples, I believe there were others too. Loss of scholorships comes to mind.

They were basically kicked out of the MAC for cheating. Old FU's love of Huntington, W.V. and Marshall are only surpassed by my own. Nasty fans, nasty, dirty town. Always such a pleasant experience. But, boy, could those boys play football.

FYI: For fans of Lost, actor Matthew Fox apparantly had a wonderful time filming the movie in Huntington. He plays the assistant coach, who wasn't on the plane.

Well it is clear I am not a Marshall fan. But it was a horrible tragedy.

Remember Wichita State also.

You can also throw Evensville in there also.

Yes Im a Marshall fan but I still keep up with IAA, espcially the SoCon., Thought that ETSU dropping football was one of the craziest things ever xidiotx . Congrats to App. State for the National Champiomship this last year.

Yes Marshall at that time had one of the most in apt College coaches that had no ideas what the recruiting rules were. He was hired straight out of HS without any training of how to recruit. And got us in Hot water. Us moving down to IAA was the best moves after the 1970 disaster we could have made.

The documentary that you are talking about is "From Ashes to Glory" and is still run on PBS across the nation from time to time.

In 1988 the city of Huntington passed a referendum that would allow a new stadium to be built for Marshall University. In 1991 it opened with a 24-23 win over New Hampshre. At the time Marshall is 101-9 in Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

If you want to know anything about the Crash only thing you have to do is go here. Everything is go here

No offense but after 40 years I am not sure Marshall has any idea of recruiting rules now.

Any way welcome to the board.

Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and now USC have had worse violations then Marshall had the last time. And none of them will have anything done to them. For 2 reasons.

1) The lady that gave Marshall their last violations was new to the board and had to make her statement to the NCAA. At the time Alabama was embroled in the scandle of paying a HS football coach off to steer a player to their program, giving Marshall violations put that on the back burnner and ppl forgot about it

2) Marshall boosters didn't have the money to pay the NCAA off like the BCS schools would.

With Snyder at the helm things will change. We had no NQers this yr in our class and had 5 that had 3.9 or higher.

I have little regard for Marshall athletics, even though I have a great deal of sympathy for those who lost their lives in that horrific plane crash and admiration for those who were left behind to carry on with their lives. I also have the utmost respect for the way the school and community rebounded from the tragedy, but am ultimately left cold by the shortcuts MU FB took to get to their current position, such as it is.

MU is very, very fortunate that the NCAA choose not to extend their 2003 investigation of the MU FB violations beyond the 1997 season. Aside from the charges of academic fraud & paying of impermissible employee benefits, MU might have also faced investigation for using more than the max number of I-AA equivalancies during their '96 championship run.

C'est la vie. All the best to MU.

If Alabama, Oklahoma etc cheats so what, Furman played against Marshall.

Had the movie on the dvr for several weeks, started it up early this morning and polished it off over the noon hour. Hate tear jerkers, but this is a good production, and deserves to be seen by football fans.

I recommend it fairly highly. xthumbsupx
