This past weekend both the mens and womens teams from UDel qualified for the 2006 UPA College Ultimate Frisbee Championships. The fellas beat Pittsburgh for the top seed out of the Metro East region. The ladies won the game to go in the backdoor bracket over Cornell to claim the second spot.

Both teams have made it to the Championships before, but not in the same year. The tournament will be in Columbus, OH over the Memorial Day weekend.

No other I-AA schools have qualified...yet. The New England regionals are next weekend. I'm not sure if there are any womens teams in contention, but the top 3 seeds in the mens tourney are Brown (last year's Champ!), Boston University (former I-AA), and Harvard. UMass is #6 in that region. The William & Mary men played well in the Atlantic Coast region and managed a 5th place finish ahead of Richmond (7) and JMU (9).

I played ultimate frisbee as an intramural activity when I was in college (at UD prior to them having a UF team it would appear though) and it was amazing that there were actually teams with gameplans and formations (no kidding) - a lot of people actually take this seriously.

I played in an inter-seminary Ultimate tournament a few weeks back - there was a former Wofford student who had supposedly been a Callahan award candidate.

Princeton Theological Seminary plays very good Ultimate Frisbee, BTW.

That's something I wish I'd done more of in college...

I had no idea UD was for the frisbee-throwing, hacky-sack playing, birkenstock-wearing, clove smoking student!

Interestingly enough, ultimate will have a Div III tourney this year for small schools...

It's not really only for NCAA Div. III teams, but that's just the name.

There is a definite trend these days in ultimate that shows big schools getting better and better. The smaller schools aren't able to compete. Big schools have more money from student council to help with travel expenses. Big schools have an IMA leagues to help increase the player base. Big schools have more athletes that aren't playing 'real' sports.
