Former Bobcats anxiously await this weekend's NFL Draft

Two days of simply waiting for a phone call from someone, anyone, from the National Football League. Two days of hoping someone saw a flash of brilliance, a glimpse of potential or a moment of promise in the endless hours of live scouting, workouts or videotape.

Two days of praying your name will appear shortly after the words “Current Selection” on the ticker of ESPN's NFL Draft coverage.

That's what awaits Texas State's newest crop of draft-eligible players as the NFL Draft kicks off Saturday at noon. The six players, all mostly projected as fourth to seventh round picks or undrafted free agents, have a slim chance of breaking Texas State's record for most players drafted in a year. The record for drafted Texas State players is three, a feat accomplished four times, most recently in 2000 (Spergon Wynn, Darrick Vaughn and Clifton Black).

Barrick Nealy and Fred Evans are the two Bobcats most likely to be drafted this weekend. Wide receiver Markee White, punter Cory Elolf, offensive lineman Thomas Keresztury and defensive tackle Travis Upshaw are also hoping to be selected late in the proceedings and all six seem prepared to accept anything from a late round selection to signing an undrafted free agent contract. No matter what, all six will likely have to prove themselves soon after draft weekend in mini-camps and other team workouts.
