Good to see 3 ranked teams from the Dakotas. And the haters said we couldn't support 4 D1 universities :D
Also suprised to still see 8 CAA teams in the top 20. Richmond and W&M are looking pretty shaky to still be ranked IMO.

How do you have Tennessee-Martin ranked, but not Tennessee Tech? Tennessee Tech is 4-1, with their only loss to a FBS, and they just beat Martin on the road.
In fact, I'd argue Tennessee Tech's resume is about the same as Jacksonville St.'s. They're both 4-1. Jacksonville St.'s loss was a blowout to Chattanooga; Tennessee Tech's was a blowout to Iowa. They've each beat Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Illinois (Tech beat both on the road, while Jax St beat them at home). Jax St gets a nod for their win at Murray State. But to have them as a top 10 team, and not rank Tech, seems off to me.

I brought this same thing up when I noticed that Jackson State was getting more votes than Alabama State.
Jackson State has only one loss, to Alabama State, at Jackson State.
Alabama State has one loss, to a FBS team.
How could you reasonably vote Jackson State higher than Alabama State?

Week 6 Poll Results
1 Georgia Southern Eagles 2199 51
2 Northern Iowa Panthers 2152 20
3 North Dakota State Bison 2048 13
4 Montana State Bobcats 1989 2
5 Wofford Terriers 1978 4
Top 5 are pretty interchangable in my mind. I wouldn't have a problem with any order of these teams. I do feel that there is a drop off after #5 to NH, Maine, etc.

I think Maine could be in the conversation. They have the misfortune of starting the season unranked but in my opinion have a better resume than UNI right now. They have beat two top ten teams and their only loss is to Pitt.

I agree that Maine should be higher than #10. But I don't see them in the top 5. Right now I would put them around 7 with UNH & SHSU.

gee, and how can we prove this with some facts?
maybe if you showed the significant drop-off in the amount of points for positions 6-10, compared to 1-5, you might be able to underscore your point:

7 Sam Houston State Bearkats 1648 1
8 Lehigh Mountain Hawks 1548

10 Maine Black Bears 1436
Exactly, the poll is all the proof you need.

Not really. You could argue by the poll it drops off over a hundred between UNI and NDSU too. Too me, 1-7 are all in striking distance (week-to-week depending on what happens) with 8-10 on the doorstep.

Don't want to single you out, but why?
Ga. Southern Wins: Samford, Tusculum (non-counter), Western Carolina, @ Elon, and Chatty (by 1 point)
Wofford Wins: Presby (by 7), Samford, Appalachian State, Citadel (close loss to Clemson)
North Dakota State Wins: Lafayette, St. Francis, Minnesota (by double digits), Illinois State and SIU
Montana State Wins: UC Davis, Minot State (non-counter), EWU, Sac State, Portland State (by 2)
UNI Wins: Stephen F. Austin, WIU, Mizzou State, Indiana State (1 point loss to Iowa State)
Now, for the CAA homer in Me:
Maine: Bryant, Albany, Delaware, JMU (6 point loss to Pittsburgh)
UNH: Lehigh, Richmond, Holy Cross, Villanova (Blown out by Toledo)
-----
If you're ranking on Resumes, how do you rank those?
For me:
1. NDSU (Undefeated with an FBS win and ok win over SIU ... could make the argument for Maine here, though).
2. Maine (wins over ranked JMU on the road, and UD, along with 6 point loss to Pitt)
3. UNH (wins over ranked Lehigh and Richmond, both on road. HC is a pretty significant third win)
4. Wofford (wins over Appalachian State and Samford)
5. UNI (best win over Indiana State, plus Iowa State nailbiter)
6. Montana State (best win over 4 loss EWU or Sac State?)
7. Georgia Southern (best win over a questionable Elon team?)
--
I don't think people should agree with me, but if you really look at these resumes, why is Georgia Southern #1? Even if you want to dismiss CAA, Wofford is a better call there, IMO. FYI, I don't vote.

Good point... I was thinking from Richmond as the center. About 3 1/2 from Norfolk to Harrisonburg ;)

GSU's best win is UT-C. Record wise they may not blow you away, but besides blowing the Citadel game they have proven to be a tough opponent.

Both of which were in the top 25 when we beat them, and then went on the road against an undefeated BSC team and won. I know it was 2 points at the end, but we also had 2 punts blocked and lost a pooch kick at the end. Take away the special teams mistakes and we dominated a very good Portland State. I think the Cats resume stacks up with any of the top 5.

And by-the-way, I think EWU has an excellent chance to run the table and be the third BSC entry into the playoffs when this is all said and done.

I don't think earlier ranking should specifically bolster your case, unless something has changed on the team you played that caused their drop in ranking. For instance, if you had played EWU in the 1st game last year and then Taiwan Jones was injured the rest of the year. Then saying they were ranked when we played them would matter.
FYI My top 3 are GSU, UNI, MSU.
What is the proper way to rank teams by who they did beat or lost to or by how they played while doing it? If there were two undefeated teams and one looked solid throughout each of their games but had only played one ranked team, while the other only played well in stretches but had won close games over 2 ranked opponents, who should be the higher ranked team?

I think what troubles me here is that if you replaced "UNH" and "Maine" with "JMU" "Richmond" "Delaware" or "William and Mary" (and they had the same resume that UNH or Maine had) I have no doubt those teams would be in the top 5 based on quality of wins.

I don't think so. UNH may have had that problem in 2003 or prior but since then they are more of a staple in the polls and at least as known if not better known to the voters than all but maybe Delaware.
Maine, you may have some traction on but no way on UNH.

Disagree - as mentioned before - I think they were treated unfairly for getting rocked by Toledo and I think any CAA team would have been treated the same - their #6 rankings is more a result of dropping after that loss and nobody in today's top 5 faltering (with the exception of Wofford impressing their way in).

Is Wofford's win over Appalachian State more impressive than UNH's win over Lehigh (Nevermind Richmond and Holy Cross) or Maine's wins over UD and JMU? That doesn't pass the sniff test to me. If you're arguing the impressive performance against Clemson, shouldn't Maine get the same treatment and then some for a better resume?

Yes Wofford's win over App is more impressive than a 48-41 win over Lehigh that they maybe should not have won

The problem is where they were ranked in the preseason. Maine wasn't at all, and I am pretty sure Wofford was in the Top 10 (off top of my head without looking back). Sure Maine's resume looks good, and this is exactly why there shouldn't be preseason polls. There shouldn't be polls until probably about week 4 or 5. All in all it doesn't matter. We will find out who is who when the playoffs come around.

I agree that they were probably treated unfairly for the Toledo game, but I disagree that any CAA team would have been treated the same. W&M got rocked 40-3 by UVA, but barely dropped at all. While UVA is in the ACC, I don't think people really see them as better than Toledo, yet W&M wasn't punished like UNH.
Personally, I haven't put UNH in the top 5 because of their games against Lehigh and Richmond. Although they won, those games reinforced the major impression I took away from the Toledo game -- UNH's secondary can't stop anyone (until they play W&M on Sat).

as a UNH fan, I dont think UNH is disrespected at all. We got smoked by a good FBS team, and easily could have lossed all three games against Lehigh, Richmond, and even Holy Cross. Presonally, I dont care where we are ranked. I remember being ranked number 1 in 2005, what did that do for us? I would rather UNH be disrespected in the polls and keep winning all the way to the NC rather than us peaking at number 1 mid season and watch us bow out in the second round again. Yes, a playoff seed and homefield would be nice, but the NCAA doesnt want to play any playoff games at cowell unless they have to.
