Recap of last year's game...

The venue was significantly larger, and the fan turnout was greater than usual.

But the Battle of the Piney Woods between Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State remained as fierce a rivalry as it’s ever been.

SFA’s defense twice held off furious rallies by Sam Houston in the final two minutes, stopping the Bearkats on a fourth-down play with eight seconds remaining to preserve a 31-28 win before a series-record crowd of 24,685 in the 85th installment of the Battle of Piney Woods on Saturday at Reliant Stadium.

I can't wait...hell even if Sam wins (which is a distinct possibility given how ****ty SFA is playing this season) there is always something special about this game. Great tailgating, and I'm even having a few brews with some of the katfans.com group.

Any attendance guesses? More or less than last year?

I would think we would be over 24,000 again... SHSU is evidently outselling both SFA and the Houston Texans' LSSE group according to the Bearkat athletic department. We'll see what kind of numbers we get closer to the game, but hopefully there'll be another great week of pub in the Houston area for the contest...

When you go on SFAJacks.com to buy tickets, the sections that are left are almost sold out...atleast on the SFA side.

I've heard projections as high at 30,000 for the game. They are even preparing to open sections in the next level if needed. You have to plan on a few walk-up buyers.

Time for the good stuff...

HUNTSVILLE — Well, it’s finally October and that can only mean one thing. The football season is about to get really interesting now as conference games get into full swing.

Throughout the first month of the fall, every team in the Southland Conference has gotten to test their mettle against strong opponents from the FCS as well as teams from the power conferences in the FBS.

Bookie Sneed on BOPW...

Bookie Sneed isn’t a fan of purple.

The 2010 graduate of Conroe High and current Sam Houston State cornerback has grown to despise the color, which is worn by rival Stephen F. Austin University, since he stepped on to campus in Huntsville last fall.

“It’s such a big rivalry,” said Sneed. “You grow to not like people in purple.”

The rivalry between the two Southland Conference schools will be in full bloom when the teams meet up for the annual Battle of the Piney Woods clash at Reliant Stadium at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sneed will be right in the thick of it.

Sports Network has caught wind of the Flanders for Payton campaign...

Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - The "likes" are rolling in for Sam Houston State running back Tim Flanders.

The Southland Conference university started a Facebook page Wednesday to try to get Flanders added to the Walter Payton Award Watch List. The award, whose list was updated Tuesday without Flanders, is given to the outstanding player in the Football Championship Subdivision, presented by The Sports Network and sponsored by Fathead.com.

John McClain talks BOPW...

Before we get to the Texans and Raiders, I’ve got to make two points: 1) I’m so glad TCU is joining the Big 12. I wish the conference could take the University of Houston, too. 2) I’m hoping that Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State break the conference record for attendance of 27,500. They drew 24,685 to Reliant Stadium last year, and they’re hoping to set a record Saturday. Lumberjacks and Bearkats from the area should check out their annual grudge match, the Battle of the Piney Woods.

Sam Houston State looks to shut down SFA

HUNTSVILLE — On paper, Sam Houston State's defense is one of the best in the Football Championship Subdivision.

The Bearkats (4-0, 1-0 Southland Conference) lead the FCS in rushing defense (51.8 yards per game) and are eighth in scoring defense (17 points per game). The defense has allowed a combined 31 points in the first three quarters of its four games, with 21 of those coming in a single quarter. Sam Houston State forced a season-high five turnovers in last weekend's 22-7 win over Texas-San Antonio.

Triple Threat

HUNTSVILLE — Here’s a simple question.

What position does sophomore Richard Sincere play.

The answer, as it turns out, isn’t really that easy to come by. The truth is that depending on the game situation, Sincere, who is listed on the Bearkats’ roster as a wide receiver, can fill any one of several roles on the offense no matter if it’s as a receiver, running back or even quarterback.

From Facebook, 'Twas the Night Before the Battle of the Piney Woods...

Twas the night before the Piney Woods and all through the state

Not a Bearkat was worried, not even Wade Pate

The players were checked into their hotel with care

In hopes that come curfew, they’d all be there

Moses was out drinking but that’s nothing new

He can do that now, his career is through

They have a new kid under center and they say he has a gun

But this is his first Battle, he has no idea what’s to come

I was out for a stroll taking in a bit of the night life

I ended up on Montrose, this just didn’t seem quite right

I passed by a place by the name of JR’s

Couldn’t believe the Lumberjack was heading to that bar

Then out on Kirby there arose such a clatter,

I sprinted down the block to see what was the matter

It then became clear, since there was nowhere to hide

It was Sammy, and most of the Orange Pride

He was dressed in all fur, from head to toe

His jersey was on and he was ready to go

Tailgate supplies were packed away in a sack

But security wouldn’t let him in, not til 10 and he could come back

I asked Sammy who he thought would score

He said there’d be plenty and then plenty more

Flanders, Williams, Sincere, and Bell through the air

Flanders again, No one will even touch him there

How he didn’t make the Payton list, I’ll never know

Did they see what he did against FBS New Mexico?

That doesn’t matter, because he is going to get his stats

He’ll score one more, not even looking back

(It is important to note here that I can speak to mascots,

I just couldn't figure out how to work it in the rhyme)

Bookie adds one just for good measure

Fritz is pumped, these kids are really coming together

Weaver will get a sack, Brown will add two

Darrius and Darnell will be a twin wrecking crew

As Sammy was about to leave to prepare for the festivities

He gave me a tip when dealing with rivalries

Don’t get too confident, because anyone can win

A couple more clichés, and I didn’t see him again

But a voice could be heard from over on Fannin

There was no doubt come Saturday who would be winnin’

Wear orange to Reliant, outnumber the Jacks two to one

Eat’em up Kats, we got this one!

Willie Fritz pre-game...

(on one game this week)... Goal every week is to be 1-0. Keep winning ballgames to put pressure on yourself. Hard to win a lot of games. Got to keep focus, attention to detail and all those other things. Had a good week of practice and ready to perform.

(on possible letdown after UNM)... had to play without Brian Bell, which not sure of til latter part of the week. UTSA is going to beat some folks. Good on return, kicking game. Not a letdown, particularly not on defensive side of ball.

(on struggle vs UTSA D-Line)... we had two backs and they had nine guys within six yards of football. Tough to run, got to be able to pass it. See it today. Got to set run up with pass some times. We'll have to do that today.

(O-Line)... line is playing better each week. Really happy for those guys. Get to play eight guys on line, which have not done. Get to develop depth. More rotation, keeping them fresh.

(healthy lines critical to success)... SHSU was decimated with injuries heading into WIU. Caleb Hopson playing best football. Always played good, but ability to be really special. Travis Watson is fantastic leader. Riley Smith, Chris Rogers, Joey White, lots of guys in there playing upfront.

(Torrance Wlliams)... has made different. Came to Sam prior to WF's arrival. HS coach was former SHSU player Kevin Johnson. Done a nice job. Our guys are getting better and here he is in 3rd year. Has ability and work ethic and smarts. Outstanding player in SLC conference.

Willie Fritz pre-game...continued...

(being too hyped) No inspirational speakers. Guys are workmanlike during week. Meetings, attention to detail. Hard to win a lot of games in a row. Lucky as player with 12 game streak, as coach won over 10 games in a row and as a head coach, one time won 24 in a row. Difficult to do. Got to be focused every week. Luckily for us, we got senior leadership and upperclassmen leadership. They control locker room. Guys getting better. Everyone is getting better every week. Collectively getting better.

(on SFA) Still one of top offensive squads in country. Running ball more than they did last year. Probably run ball 20, 30 times. Unusual for them. QB is getting better each week. Hard to replace a four-year starter and Walter Payton Award winner.Lot of kids back. 10 starters back. Fly around. Tough schedule. Going to get SFA best effort.

(keys to win) Got to eliminate pre-snap calls. Once ball is snapped, you got human error involved. Style of play makes for pass interference calls. Turnover, takeaway margin last week was +3. If you are +3, at 100% winning. +1 is 90%. Stuff SFA running the ball. Play out infront, they will throw every down and that's an advantage for us. Important to throw ball effectively. Brian Bell had best week of practice. Few times ball didn't hit the ground. Throw it a little more than we've seen before.

Boy, the wheels have really come off the season for SFA. It seems like they are getting worse by the game. They need to win out simply to not have a losing season. Their schedule was front loaded with tough games, but it doesn't look good with McNeese still to be played.

This is my favorite photo from the game :D Some Sam fan came over into an SFA section and started running his mouth...it went back and forth..then it got personal..and worse..and worse..then the Sam fan took a swing at an SFA fan...and here's the end result.

I'm sure some Sam fans are going to say we were classless because this guy got his *** beat..but if you're going to throw the first punch, you better win the damn fight.

Anyone who fights at a football game is a freaking loser. We didn't see that one but there was an altercation on the SHSU side too involving a SFA fan.

I heard about that and honestly..I agree with you on your statement about fighting at a football game.

I hope if that SFA fan instigated and threw the first punch he got his *** beat too. Just for being stupid..like said Sam fan above.

How was the atmosphere of this came compared to last year? I think I will make this game next year! How was the attendance this year compared to last years game?

The attendance was a new record - 25,083. Of note, the game moves to November next year from its October date.

Evidently, the Tim Flanders 'flip' made ESPN's Top Plays... will see if we can find a direct link to ESPN...

Saw this today on guyism.com. Just a warning, the language is a little vulgar throughout. Basically it seems like the Sam fan was saying something about some of the SFA woman, an SFA guy took a swing, and then out of nowhere an undercover cop appeared behind them

I know this is off-topic, but I'd love to see a SHSU-Wofford matchup. FCS's top rushing defense against out triple option. It would be very interesting!

Not only is SHSU at the top of the rushing defense food chain, keep in mind that SHSU's rushing offense is ranked No. 6 in the country... would feature two teams that run the ball significantly and it'd likely be a relatively quick game!
