Georgia Southern remains at No.1 for the third week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After defeating conference foe, Western Carolina 52-20, Georgia Southern remains in the No. 1 spot of the FCS Coaches Poll for the third straight week. The Eagles, who improved to 3-0 on the season, recorded the third best rushing performance in school history Saturday afternoon.
Ezayi Youyoute ran for an 83 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter and led the Eagles in rushing with 119 yards. J.J. Wilcox finished with 115 yards on six carries and Jerick McKinnon recorded 114 yards. Georgia Southern ran for 634 yards, while having four players with over 90 yards on the ground.
Northern Iowa and Appalachian State remain at No. 2 and No.3 respectively, this week. Northern Iowa knocked off Western Illinois, 38-10 in their home opener. The Panthers rushed for 275 yards with David Johnson leading the way. Johnson had a career-high 132 yards on 21 carries.
Appalachian State defeated No.14 Chattanooga, 14-12. Chattanooga held the Mountaineers scoreless in the first 30 minutes of play. The Mocs two-point conversion failed with less than 10 minutes to play and the Mountaineers recorded four of their seven second-half first downs in the team’s last two drives, securing the win.
Montana State knocked off last year’s FCS Champion, Eastern Washington 36-21. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 3-1 and maintain the No.4 ranking.
Delaware moved into the Top 5 following their 27-17 win over Old Dominion. Despite an early deficit to their new conference rival, the Blue Hens were able to win their third straight game. Delware’s Nihja White recorded his second straight 100-yard receiving game.
Wofford and North Dakota State are tied for sixth this week. The Terriers jumped two spots in the rankings after knocking off conference rival Samford, 28-23 Saturday night. North Dakota State had this week’s biggest jump in the rankings as the Bison move up six spots following their 37-24 victory over Minnesota.
James Madison and New Hampshire both picked up wins this weekend moving them into the No.8 and 9 spot, respectively. William & Mary and Richmond round out the Top 10, as the two teams tied for the No. 10 spot.
Sam Houston State, Southern Utah, Indiana State and Sacramento State enter the Top 25 this week; while Eastern Washington, Liberty and Youngstown State lost their rankings.
Nine conferences are represented in the poll. The Colonial Athletic Association leads the way with six teams, followed by the Southern Conference and Missouri Valley Conference with four ranked teams each. The Big Sky, Great West and Southland have three teams. The Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference, Ohio Valley and Patriot League all have one team ranked.
The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.

This is very wrong! Towson deserves a top-25 raking based on their results relative to others in FCS; and to put them behind teams such as Coastal, Holy Cross, and Liberty right now is just wrong - plain wrong!
In the NEC, Monmouth should be on the radar, but Duquesne needs to prove a lot more before I'd put them on the radar.

Holy Cross is 2-1:
L 24-16 UMASS
W 37-7 Colgate
W 30-22 Harvard
Towson is 3-0:
W 42-3 Morgan State
W 31-10 Villanova
W 42-17 Colgate
Both teams stomped Colgate.
Morgan State is a complete pushover that isn't all that impressive of a win...Towson did exactly what they should have to them.
I'd say that beating Harvard is more impressive than beating Villanova this year. Plus, nearly beating UMASS who looks like an above average CAA team is pretty telling.
I'm not arguing that Holy Cross is that much better than Towson, nor should they even be ranked that much higher, but to say it is "plain wrong" for Holy Cross to have a higher ranking is pretty inaccurate. Towson really hasn't played anyone great yet.

Agreed - I meant to defend HC as well but went the Coastal route - unfortunately HC gets a true test this week which they will get slammed for if they don't win (wrongly) and Towson has a huge test that they may get rewarded for keeping within 3 TD's (wrongly)

I think Towson "taking care of business" is worthy, especially if some voters think SCSU running up the score on DSU is worthy a ranking.
Holy Cross and Towson both beat 'Gate, so that's a wash. IIMO the Tigers confrence win over 'Nova is more impressive than HC's win vs. Harvard. I'm not saying the Harvard win isn't good (it is), but I think the 'Nova win (even in a down year for them) is better. how soon we forget 'Nova rebounded to beat Ivy "contender" Penn. Sure, HC was impressive in their loss to UMass, but Towson gets a shot at UMass (I think) and I project they will play as well/or better than HC. In the end a team's record has to count for something and Towson isn't playing a cream puff schedule.
I think this is just another example of voter bias and "reputation" carring more weight than it should. I'm not even saying Towson is a top-15 team, but it doesn't seem fair that other team are looked at with a different prisim.

UMass and Towson aren't playing each other this year. I think we've only played them 3 times in the history of the program.
We'll know more about Holy Cross after the UNH game, but I think they're pretty good and definitely have a chance against a struggling defense.
We probably won't learn more about Towson unless they beat Maryland.

Well actually the offense was all run the first half. Play calling like the PC game didn't start until the third quarter which looked like we would dominate the second half and then.....................Forcier went out and missed the fourth quarter.
But at the same time, CCU won and certainly should be considered ahead of Furman unless future games change that. FU shouldn't be considered for the top 25 right now. Maybe not all year. Even if we are improved, we could finish 5-6 easily. Gotta prove you are suppose to be there by winning.

SCSU 69 - DSU 0 <==> UD 45 - DSU 0
Plus SCSU has that win over BCU in Daytona to fall back on. When they played, both teams were ranked. Towson has a win over Villanova at home. And as impressive as that is, Villanova is still 1 - 3.

Agreed. The fact that William and Mary is currently ranked as the 10th best team is a travesty. A 4 point win over New Haven and very unimpressive performance against VMI are both of their wins. I had them at #25 in my poll this week.

His comparison is that Jacksonville received 14 votes. Certainly if JAcksonville deserves votes then Furman does. Of Course JAcksonville doesn't deserve votes. One more reason this poll is nutz.
Also, Coastal Carolina received 27 and beat Furman by a touchdown, so FU getting a couple of votes would not be out of line.

Before the minnesota win NDSU was riding the fact that they did fantastic last year, especially well into the playoffs. And the fact that they had very few starters graduate, and picked up some good recruits.
NDSU had done nothing to show they were not the same team or a better team before the gophers. That is how a poll works in the first few weeks.
UND sucked last year. Therefore this does not apply to them.
GSU wasn't #1 because they rocked some crappy teams, its because they have won their games against crappy teams and did great with the perception they will be even better this year.
You are either pretending to be an idiot or a poorly versed troll, I havent decided.
If you go back and look NDSU was not ranked during the early weeks last year, because they had a terrible record the year before. Yet that team ended up playing in 14 games.
In the same respect Nick mertens first year we started the preseason poll at #1 I believe and that season was a 6-5 disaster.
If and when UND has a good year making it past the first two rounds of the playoffs they will probably start the next season in the preseason top 25, even if they will ultimately end that same season 0-11.
It is how polls work, if you dont understand that you probably should never vote again.
As far as the poll is concerned right now UND is 1-2 going into week 5. And as far as the poll is concerned you only play 8 games this season unless you somehow lose or do poorly against a D2/NAIA team that would reflect negativly.

I hope you know not all the same people vote in all the polls. Here is a bunch of people (whom I can assume is not voting in other polls) voting on who they want at what ranking they want. Remember here is NDSU yes coming off a loss to EWU in the playoffs last year then destroying 2 cupcakes and then a bye week. They went down. All of a sudden UND pops up in the polls then holy hell hits Fargo. How dare anyone vote UND in for beating Drake and playing 2 FBS teams (with 1 of them beating them until 9:14 left in the game). Now would I put UND in the polls...no and to that point I didn't vote UND at all. So just coming out and saying they must have meant NDSU is total BS!!! Unless you have quotes from those who voted who admitted they voted for UND by mistake, you're making yourself and your fan base look like total fools. I used fools "pretending" you were assuming the role. Trying not to name call. And since UND was #21 and only dropped 3 spots for beating a DII team, is evidence that those same people, who you think mistook UND for NDSU, believe that UND belongs in the polls or else UND would've been unranked. What is their reason, I cannot say since I don't know who voted for whom.

Why is that funny Dan? You know what I think is funny? If NDSU beats cupcakes at home and the Gophers but can't win their conference. Remember 2007? 2 FBS wins, then lose the last game of the year to SDSU and that season was lost. No title.

Gentlemen, can we all just agree with each other (including objective posters from other universities) that the coaches poll is the worst of the major polls posted on this board. There's not enough voters period, and there's definitely not enough voters who take it seriously enough to thoroughly research the teams they're voting on prior to submitting their ballot. There's more evidence of that every week this poll is released than just the NDSU/UND conundrum.
UND got ranked, good for them. NDSU will end up exactly where we belong if we take care of our own business and not worry about what hats the moronic SIDS.... er.... coaches are pulling names out of.
If it was the AGS poll, we would have something to argue about but arguing about the Coaches Poll, to quote "Waiting", is like arguing about the smartest kid with down syndrome.

Previous to Minnesota which big win was NDSU proud of...Lafayette or St. Francis? There was no mixup betweent he schools no matter what Forum's Jeff Kopack says. Take off the green and gold glasses and wake up. If UND and NDSU did get mixed up why did UND stay into the polls at #24 with a win over a DII team? There was no mistake the week before when NDSU dropped due to the bye week. But it doesn't matter. We are in the polls and to their eyes we belong.

According to the FCS Championship handbook, the selection criteria include:
◦The win-loss record is “scrutinized to determine a team’s strength in schedule” and that fewer than seven wins in Division I play “may place a team in jeopardy of being selected.”
◦The selection committee “may give more consideration to those teams who have played all Division I opponents.”
◦Also, if a conference is guaranteed an automatic bid in the playoffs, and does not receive one, an at-large bid is given

External polls are part of the "Bridge AQ" for the PFL
http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/champ_handbo...1_football.pdf
1. 8 DI wins
2. 2 wins over teams from AQ leagues
3. Average ranking of 20 or higher in (a) the TSN poll, (b) the Coaches Poll and (c) a modified GPI using only Massey, Ashburn, Self, Laz and Wolfe. <--- those would be the polls the comittee deems official.
But since no one met the first two, the third was a non factor.

You wonder how rankings ever got to their privileged status, or why they haven't reformed. The coaches poll has serious problems with only 28 participating coaches. Fortunately, most of the conferences have a championship outcome, thus it is determined on the field.

No one, even UND fans, believe that UND should be ranked in the top 25 (Darrell even said he won't vote for them in the polls). But they are ranked in the coaches poll, good for them, it gives them something to feel that things are looking up but since UND is not eligible for the playoffs - and let's face it, they have a terrible schedule - it will only matter how good or bad UND is next year and the years after since then success can be measured by whether they (1) win the conference title, (2) make the playoffs, or (3) win the national championship.
