View Full Version : Playoff Eliminator Countdown

Although there is no rule specifically prohibiting the playoff committee from inviting a team with six Division 1 wins, preference is given to those that have seven D1 wins or more, so the chances of a team getting in with only six D1 wins is slim (you pretty much have to win the conference like Coastal Carolina). Here is who is in trouble after Week 4 (not including Independent/Ivy/SWAC)...

Can't make it to seven D1 wins:
Charleston Southern
North Carolina Central
North Dakota
South Dakota

Must win out:
Butler
Cal Poly
Central Arkansas
Eastern Washington
Gardner-Webb
Howard
Liberty
Missouri State
Morehead State
Nicholls State
Northern Colorado
Presbyterian
Southeast Missouri State
Stephen F Austin
Stony Brook
UC Davis
Virginia Military Institute

Aren't USD and UND still playoff ineligible anyway?

I think so but I just went through it by the conferences.

2 playoff teams from last year already staring down playoff elimination, wow. I'm glad Nova survived this week without joining these ranks, but thats soon to come I'm sure.

Still an indicator as to what kind of schedule one needs to have/get to reach the magic number seven. When five of your games are anticipated losses or non-counters, you set yourself up to lose by default, almost.

Liberty can still get in w/o 7 D1 wins by winning their conference. I am sure that there are others in that situation

Yes, which he stated at the start of the thread with Coastal last year. This is more or less for the "At Large" pool.

Not only that, but last year's National Champions. Crazy to go from winning it all to starting 0-4.

Just damn. xsmhx

W&M can only lose 1 more game in their final 7 to stay with 7 wins. My guess is they will be 'eliminated' in the next 3 weeks (@Villanova, @Delaware, New Hampshire).

We are both not eligible until the 2012 season at the same time UND will start Big Sky play and USD will start MVFC play.

there are still about 50 of them (which is probably why he hasn't done a list yet)

...though next week I would assume that he will have a list of those who have made the minimum qualifications (and then will update it weekly from there)

There should be only two teams that can reach seven D1 wins next week - NDSU and SHSU. The Bearkats play at McNeese, and the Bison go to SDSU.

This should be its own thread, and thanks!

Edit: If you do start a new thread, I would just add an asterisk on the "must win out" that just says "some teams could still become playoff eligible with less than seven D1 wins if they win their conference autobid".

After tonight, Sacremento State must also win out to have 7 D-1 wins. So, in the Big Sky, EWU, Weber, and Sac State must win out. Montana must win at least one of it's remaining two D-1 games. Weber at times has been challenging for Montana, so that's no gimme, and Montana State will be really tough.

Nope. They need to beat Lehigh to have a quality win on their resume.

They did put two teams from the MEAC in last year, so you never know what the committee is going to do.

Twentysix
October 30th, 2011, 03:26 AM
Yeah but those meac teams represented well they won... wait did either of them win? Atlease they were close games... wait did either of them come within 3 touchdowns(these are the good TD's, completed 2pt conversion touchdowns, ala 24 points)? But they lost by more than 24 points to teams that were in the national title game right? I give up. Georgetown is in.

van
October 30th, 2011, 07:56 AM
Nope. They need to beat Lehigh to have a quality win on their resume.

Well, if they beat Lehigh they would likely be the Patriot champ and get the AQ. Lehigh would still get in as an at large. I believe a similar scenario has played out for the MEAC and maybe OVC in recent years where they became an unlikely 2 bid conference and sombebody got Woofed.

Everyone says Georgetown at 8-3, how about Duquesne at 9-2 with a 1 pt. loss to Bucknell (same L as Gtwon) and loss to AQ Albany?

hidalgo
October 30th, 2011, 12:23 PM
If it comes down to it I think Duquesne has a legitimate shot........if the right teams lose. 9-2 with one loss in conference is as good as it is ever going to get for a second place NEC team.
