ok, you can take Minn. off of there, cause they suck this year, they will win one game against the Yanks, and thats only the Santana game. That is a tough stretch for anyone, especially with the Yanks rotation

The Twins are starting to come around and I would look for them to have a very good May. The Twins faced a brutal schedule in April and their pitching was beyond horrible but now Johan is back and the other starters are getting back on track as well.

Well, the Yankees are playing Boston again, and they're also back in first place..for now.

Is it a coincidence that the AL's 3 winningnest teams are 19-4 against Kansas City?

Or perhaps that 45% of Boston's wins have come against Baltimore and Tampa Bay (the only 2 sub .500 teams in the AL East)? On the other hand, the over-.500 teams in the AL East account for 50% of Boston's losses.

Meanwhile, in NL East news, Washington has the best record in that division since May 6 (16-11), Atlanta is 16-12 in that span, The Phillies 14-13, the Mets 13-13, and the Marlins 12-15. Way to be, Nats.

Cheapest WS win ever. You guys couldn't take a single game against a three-time defending champion in its home ballpark. In boxing, they always say to really beat a long-time champ, you have to knock him out. The Dbacks were lucky to win a split decision.

We'd be happy for a rematch, except you guys never make the playoffs.

Well, truth be told, it's not like the Yankees have been making a lot of World Series since then either - heck, the Yanks only have one more pennant than the Diamondbacks do over that same time period. Hardly something to crow about - the Yanks haven't been standing in the World Series much just waiting for Arizona to return (I'm not an Arizona fan, mind you).

As for lucky, come on, the Yanks were lucky to even have the series go back to Arizona that year - the Yanks were only saved by having that relief pitcher, Byung-Hyun Kim, blow two saves in Games 4 and 5. The Yanks were dominated that series - Arizona had a .264 BA and a 1.94 ERA as a team - the Yanks had a .183 BA and a 4.41 ERA as a team through the series. The Diamondbacks led in the 9th inning in 5 of the 7 games, and one they didn't lead in the 9th they managed to get to Rivera, giving him a shocking Game 7 blown save first and then a loss. This was the first instance of the Yankees doing it the wrong way after doing it correctly in the prior years - they relied on big price big hitters rather than good starting pitching - the pitching of Schilling/Johnson/Anderson/Batista was much better than the pitching of Mussina/Pettite/Clemens/Hernandez was that year and the Yanks haven't improved the starting rotation since then.

That will be the big question this year - they have Wang, but Mussina and especially Johnson aren't sure things in the Yankees rotation (and then whoever they put out as a 4th starter) - they have the lineup, but they haven't won a ring since they started to focus on offense at the expense of pitching. I'm not sure they win one this year either.

We out scored the Spankees 37 to 15 in the 2001 World Series - THAT IS AN ASS WHOOPING. Beat you in games 9-1, 4-0, 15-2, and 3-2. You guys lucked out with three one-run wins. We took the three-time Defending Champs to the woodshed. If the Yankees were such TRUE champions, then how do they get whooped 15-2 after taking a 3-2 series lead? Should a true champion FINISH off the opponent on the ropes? The Dbacks were the true champions - we showed heart and determination, and soundly spanked your asses. And then, knocked the "invicible" tag off of Rivera, who hasn't been the same since.

Isn't that just revising history a bit there? The hit the D-backs got that tied the game and gave Rivera the blown save was a good hit down the right field line. Sure Gonzo's hit to win it was a cheap little blooper, but that's what happens after you blow the lead and then put men on base and have to pull the infield in. Nothing cheap about that win though, they got to Mariano in the 9th and this one time (well, the games against the Sox in 2004 didn't go well for him either) he didn't come through for the Yanks and it cost them the rings.

This is quite a funny post. It took a fluke error AND a bloop hit in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 for the series to be won. Congrats. As a fan, you should be happy that your team won a world series. But when it takes such circumstances...9th inning comeback in game 7...a series is hardly an "ass-whooping" as you put it.

People love to hate the Yankees, and that's fine. But let's keep some semblence of reality here and agree to give credit where credit is due.

Oh, I agree with the Mets, now after 2 starts Pedro does not look impressive. And then you consider that he's had some iffy October starts in the past, and if he gets to the WS and if the Yanks get there I wouldn't count on him at all to come through against the Yankees (the unis are in his head) he's not a reliable pitcher at all right now - kinda like Randy Johnson. The Mets could be in trouble because even Glavine doesn't look great so after those two they have Il Duque and Traschel - just like the Yanks, they're going to need to hit a lot to win in the postseason.

As for other staffs, I wouldn't count out the Twins yet, even without Liriano. The Tigers and A's are young but you gotta be careful there too - and just because the A's of a few years ago were playoff pushovers doesn't mean they will be again. I'm not sure of anyone's bullpens so who know's how that breaks out. In the NL, watch out for San Diego or LA (if they both make it) - their starting pitching is pretty decent. Heck, you can throw the Phillies in there too since Myers and Hamels have looked lights out recently. Pitching on other teams isn't as bad as you think it is, just not the names people are used to.

I try not to make generalized assumptions, but I will say this: sadly, you come across as the type of person who would try using this "point" had the Yankees won that Game 7. The Diamondbacks did. Congrats to their team. But it's called the "World Series" and it doesn't matter what happens during the games, it's who wins. You would have a hard time finding a Yankees fan who would dare make a comment like "The Yankees outscored the so-and-sos" in a given series if it were a series that went to 7 games. Why? Because you can't get a closer series than one that goes 7 games. Had the Diamondbacks won the series 4-0, winning each game by only 1 run, would you run around saying "the Diamondbacks whooped the Yankees ass"? Probably based on your response.

Exactly. The last PLAYOFF GAME Arizona even won was that Game 7 back in 2001.

If there were a team out there that had been dominating this decade in a manner similar to the Yankees from 96 to 2000 ( - 97), or even like the Braves over an even longer period of time, I'd be the first to tip my cap. Success is something I appreciate. But since 2001, we've had 5 straight "1-and-done" teams with Arizona, Angels, Florida, Boston, and the White Sox.

Even worse, is that only the Angels have found some semblance of post-season success since winning a world series.

Arizona: 0 playoff wins (swept in '03...never made it back)
Boston: 0 wins (swept in '05, missing playoffs in '06)
Florida: 0 wins (no appearances)
LA Angels: 4 wins (swept in '04, ALCS in '05)
White Sox: lookin' like they will miss the playoffs after winning in 2005

It's no myth. Rivera blew the save in Game 4 that would've been the 4 games to none clincher and would've seen the Yanks into the World Series. He pitched in the next game and while it wasn't his save that was blown (the runners on base that scored weren't his) he didn't close out the Sox and the runs got in. You can't be an objective fan and not say that Rivera not getting the job done in Game 4 and then not being anything special in Game 5 (again, not his fault but he didn't do anything "other-wordly" to perpetuate his superman status) was a major factor in the Yanks blowing a 3 games to none lead, leading in the last half inning of the 4th game.

You are just flat out wrong. Rivera gave up one earned run in the entire series. Further, in Game 5, Rivera came into a bases loaded, no out situation, with a one run lead. He got out of the inning giving up one run. In that situation, you rarely do better than that.

If Torre had brought Rivera in to start the 8th inning with a two-run lead (like I said at the time he should), Yanks win that series 4 games to 1. Gordon was not pitching well but Torre still let him start the 8th. If he had gone to Mo for the six-out save, the Sox lose that series.

Certainly after Ortiz led off the 8th with a dinger, Torre should have immediately gone to Mo.

Ahhh.....the Monday morning quarterback rears it's ugly head. I suppose you were screaming at the TV on that late November night in 2001 that Torre should have his infield play back, too?

Give it up, man. Year after year, the Yankees spend like drunken sailors, and what's it gotten them? The same number of World Series titles as the Diamondbacks, Angels, White Sox, Red Sox and Marlins in the last 6 years.

One. Now, who does THAT make look stupid?

Nine straight AL East titles, 11 straight playoff appearances, and four WS titles in the stretch. The most dominant team of that period.

Give it up yourself. The Dbacks had one moment, a cheap one at that, and have been pretty sad ever since.

That's just ignorance and bitterness, plain and simple.

If there were a team making the playoffs and winning multiple world series, then of course THAT accomplishment would be viewed as BETTER than teams winning divisions such as 9 in a row. But that team does not exist. The Yankees have won 9 AL East divisions in a row, 11 of the last 12. They have gone to 6 World Series during that span and won 4 of them. Yes, they have not won since 2000, but they have still won 3 of the last 10 World Series and made it to 5 of the 10.

Again , if there were a team with similar success, you wouldn't hear a peep from Yankees fans. Atlanta is the next closest thing, and we know their track record: 2 world series appearences, winning one and losing one.

When a team is fortunate enough to replicate the success the Yankees have had over the past 10 years, making it to half the world series over that span, winning 4+...then it would be clearly a successful run worthy of merit...and I will be the first person to recognize that success.

Not a fan of a sports team, I take it?

I'd had season tickets for the Yankees & Jets most of my life. Via XM or DirecTV I listen or watch every Yankees game and watch the Jet's each week. But I am not a player on those teams. They are "the Yankees" and I am a fan. The only "WE" which should ever be applicable to a team should be if you are officially affiliated with that team as a player, coach or executive.

I'll loosin' up my opinions when it comes to collegiate fans. If you are a student at a school, you are affiliated in an official manner with that school.

When a team is losing Game 7 of the World Series and it is the bottom of the ninth and that team does amazing things to come back and win that game, winning the title...but a fan has the audacity to say that the series was an "ass-whooping"? That is the biggest joke in this thread.

An "ass-whooping" would be the 2003 World Series in which the Marlins beat the Yankees in 6 games. An ass-whoopin would be the 2000 WS in which the Yankees won in 5 games, or the 1998 or 1999 series which were 4 game sweeps.

Minor correction - if the Braves had won 14 NL East titles that would be nothing short of amazing, especially considering that they've only been in the NL East for the past 11 seasons.

On the contrary, it's exactly what Yankee fans typically do to detract other team's accomplishments. How many times do you hear the 26 titles brought up? Pretty much everytime that another team claims some level of success. Nevermind that a good 20 of those titles were won before a good majority of the fans were born (and 4 were in this era of runaway salaries), it's brought up constantly, especially if another team has a streak like the Braves. Just listen to WFAN - it's all about the championships, and they've ripped the Braves' streak of division titles as a nice little accomplishment, but hollow in that WS titles haven't been more numerous. Face it, the Yankees used to talk about World Series rings, now they talk about winning the AL East (which is pretty much tantamount to saying they've beaten the Red Sox since the O's and Rays are non-competitive and the Jays aren't a factor in any post season discussion and haven't been since Joe Carter's HR) - that's a step down.

The 14 straight is a pet peeve of mine. The streak was really 11. Montreal was running away with the division in 1994. I know no champ was crowned that year, but 11 is the truthful number. Still impressive.

I think you are confusing Yankees fans with ALL non-Braves fans. The Braves not being able to win the World Series after dominating the regular season the past 10 years was a running gag in all of sports. The Braves and their 1 WS win is often mentioned in categories like Buffalo Bills, Dan Marino, Payton Manning thus far...etc: regular season heros who had limited post season success or championships. Regardless of how it is taken, the Braves dominating their division for so long was extremly impressive. And a fan of the Kansas City Royals might poke fun at the the lack of Braves championships over the past 11 years, but inside they still appreciate the regular season success the team has had. I know I have.

Agreed. That was a tough season for Yankees fans hoping to finally get to the playoffs after such a long wait. But for Montreal, it meant the virtual end to their existence. That Montreal team was impressive to watch. Just take a look at their roster from that year: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/roster.php?y=1994&t=MON

Oddly, Red Sox fans hated the strike so much because they had Wetteland signed alogn with Sosa, but those contracts were scrapped with the strike.

That 94 Expo team was loaded! Most likely, they would have won the WS. That would have kept fan intested enough to allow them to keep the core intact, winning the new NL East in 95. And provided enough momentum to build a new stadium.

To a Phillies fan it certainly does - officially speaking, the Phillies were the last non-Braves team before the Mets this year to win the NL East and that was the '93 Phils that almost won the WS (except for damn Fregosi taking Roger Mason out in the 8th inning of Game 6 and putting in Larry Anderson who ended up turning the lineup over so that MitchiePoo had to face the heart of the lineup in the 9th and when we had Curt Schilling as a stone cold mortal lock to win Game 7 - oh, what could've been!)

Yea, not exactly a feel good story there. The AL's answer to Barry Bonds as the biggest a-hole in the league, who has made a career of spitting the bit in big situations (like the time he walked in the winning run in a decisive Mets-Braves playoff game), comes through with the first big-time effort in his sad and way-too-long career.

At least Rogers declared an amnesty after the game, declaring that all members of the media were safe and could approach him without risk of being assaulted, so that he could talk about the one time in his life when he pitched well in a big situation.

Man, I couldn't have been more right about the stinkin' Yankees. Although, truth be told, it's been obvious to most since 2000 that the Yankees aren't building a team that can win the WS - make the playoffs every year? Absolutely (heck, with $200+ in salary every year (i.e. just about 3x the league average), you should make the playoffs at least). But unless they address the pitching (both starting as well as the bullpen outside of Rivera, although he won't last forever) then the Year 2000 chant will actually start to catch on. Hey, Lupica used my line on Sunday - $1.2 billion dollars spent and all they have to show for it is one lousy pennant and a bunch of playoff appearances, although some very short appearances at that. What a shame.

He'd be willing to take a cut, but the union wont let him.

In 2003 the deal with Texas and Boston was done, A Rod agreed to rework his contract then the union refused to let him. The rest is history, BEAUTIFUL HISTORY.
