Week 4 Thursday games - Murray State v. Tennessee Martin; Hampton at Bethune-Cookman

These games are today, folks! Why isn't anyone chatting about them?

The Racers travel to Tennessee-Martin - UTM had a one-point loss at Jacksonville State and a standard win against a lower division. Although many of us aren't sold on Jacksonville State, a very hard fought road loss (which saw the Gamecocks scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns to win 24-23) indicates UTM has a decent team. Murray State lost 21-9 at Louisville, and pitched a 39-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State - on the road, plus a convincing 58-27 win at home over Tennessee State. This should give voters a bit more to go on for whomever wins (and the loser shouldn't worry, as the coaches' poll will likely put the loser ahead of the winner in their voting). My gut tells me Murray State gets another road win tonight.

Hampton at B-C is similarly interesting; the Wildcats looked pretty solid in their(nationally broadcast) opener over Prairie View; then lost serve on their home terf against SC State. Hampton had close wins at home over Alabama A&M and Florida A&M, then a three point loss at the Monarch's place. I'll take the Wildcats at home.

I'm really looking forward to the Murray State vs. UT-Martin game because both teams have shown glimpses of playoff caliber football.

UT-Martin is the most intriguing of all the teams because (I think) they came off the OVC radar a bit to almost upset Jax State. UT-Martin has a good kicker in Cody Sandlin, who was the CFPA Placekicker of the Week in week 1. Murray State's aerial attack (#HatchAttack) will ultimately be the deciding factor in my opinion. A closer game than Tenn State for sure, but still a Racer W. I'll say 35-23.

Hampton - Bethune Cookman is slightly less interesting because I don't see the MEAC getting a 2nd team into the playoffs, and I think it's South Carolina State's to lose rather than anybody else's to win. Some good players on the defensive side of the ball for both teams and some NFL prospects. Pellerin from Hampton is ranked #38 in his DB position by CBSSports.com for NFL prospects. Chisholm is their #50 RB prospect. All in all, I think the Wildcats get this one done. Fairly low scoring, though. 31-24 Bethune-Cookman University.

seriously? Wow. I thought UTM would be a lot better than most predicted and saw a few publications having them picked as high as OVC #2 this year. But, wow.

Murray State has cut the lead to 28-9 late in the first half. The picture is kind of blurry, but I'm watching on OVC TV.

Yeah, UTM came out strong, but momentum is moving a bit towards Murray State. They managed to block a UTM punt and drove in for a touchdown (but missed the extra point), and just kicked a field goal after another sustained drive.

The name Duane Brady struck me as amusing for some reason - had a similar reaction to Superman's.

UTM gets a good drive but fizzles, settling for a field goal; UTM gets the ball back and is now looking at a fourth and four on their side of the field.

Yep. MEAC only uses instant replay for televised games. WR Isiah Thomas seemed to catch the ball and take two steps in the end zone before going to the ground. When he rolled over at a high speed, the ball came flying out. The refs reviewed and overturned.

A lot of the sloppiness was caused by poor officiating and way too many flags being thrown. Without that, I thought it was one of the more entertaining games of the season thus far.
