Well, most young players do spend a couple of years in the minors before they are thrown in the fire. In the NBA however, you have guys like say, Sebastian Telfair who couldn't beat half the guys in college.

Actually a LOT of golf pros play hockey and vice versa. I used to play ice hockey with about 20 golf pros in the DC area with the Capital alumni. I also get the chance to play golf with a lot of NHLers.
