I would bet it has something to do with the Beantown marathon being run today...

It's Patriot's Day (3rd Monday of April). It's a holiday in Mass. (and maybe Maine, I'm not sure).
The Red Sox almost always play a home game at 11AM. The marathon kicks off in Hopkinton at noon. What that means is right about 2PM, when the game is over and fans are flooding into Kenmore Square, the first bunch of runners are comming through. Fun times if you like insanely packed crowds!!!
I always avoided Boston on Patriots Day for the reasons stated above.

Sox game is a sellout every year on Patriot's Day.
The original reason for the start time of the ball game is that the baseball game used to finish BEFORE the marathon (game times are now longer and marathon times are shorter) so the logic isn't working too well, but it's tradition) so the fans would go from the game and watch the runners, as Garvey mentioned.
Now, the game is still going on as the race is being run. The winners usually run down Beacon Street (not Kenmore Square) during the 5th or 6th inning of the game, and they show the finish during the game.
The Sox try and rotate so the same teams don't play the Patriot's Day game all too often. The Yankees did it twice in like 5 years and rightfully complained to MLB.
I actually get the day off as my office overlooks the finish line and I physically can't get to my office as the streets around it are the "meet/greet" areas for families and friends after the race.
About half of the city gets the day off, it all depends on whre you work in relation to the finish line.
When I was at NU we used to get the day off, but not any more.
