Jacob Guidry looking for job in the NFL as a deep snapper
McNeese student recently concluded his career with the Cowboys

April 13, 2006

Though he only began playing football his senior year in high school, Jacob Guidry has had a good run.

And, it could be a lot better in a few weeks.

The McNeese State senior, who has played tight end and deep snapped for the Cowboys for the past three seasons, is hoping to latch on to a NFL team as a deep snapper.

There's been talk of him being a late round draft pick but as he says, "the odds of me getting drafted aren't high. Free agent may be the way but I just want a chance. That's all I want."

Reviews have been good for the 6-2 1/2, 265 pounder from St. Martinville.

He snapped for pro scouts at the McNeese pro day and at the UL Monroe pro day last month and got some good feedback.

"Seattle is definitely interested in him," said McNeese assistant coach Adam Henry who serves as the school's liaison with the pro leagues.

"He snapped for the Saints (New Orleans) and did very good."

Since the end of the 2005 football season, Guidry has been honing his skill as a deep snapper, both long and short.

Trey Junkin, the former Louisiana Tech standout who went on to play numerous years in the NFL strictly as a deep snapper, critiqued him early.

"Everything he recommended, I've done," Guidry said. "I've changed my stance and some of my follow through. I'm also working on getting just the right spin on the ball so the punter catches it with the laces up. "

Henry said that from what he has gathered from the scouts that have seen the Cowboy player, the pros have been impressed with the speed and accuracy of his snaps and also the fact that he can play other positions.

At McNeese he was a tight end who also deep snapped. During the two seasons he was at LSU he also played fullback.

"I think that being able to play other positions is an advantage for me," Guidry said. "I know that most of the deep snappers out of college this year are mainly just that. Having a player who can handle more than one saves the team a roster spot.

"I had one scout who emailed me asking if I could play at 290 pounds. I played at 278 pounds last year and I can do whatever it takes to get in."

His weight and his ability to handle himself is a plus.

"When you're short snapping (for place kicks) in the pros you have a big tackle over you so you have to be able to hold your own and not get bullied," he added.

Guidry concluded his career at McNeese with 14 pass receptions for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns, being used mainly for his blocking in the Cowboy offensive scheme.

After one year of football at St. Martinville High, where he played both tight end and defensive end, he signed with LSU. He transferred to McNeese following his rookie year with the Tigers and played three seasons for the Cowboys, his first year shortened when he broke a foot in a game against Kansas State.

"Coach Delahoussaye (Carroll) got me deep snapping when I was at St. Martinville and then George Yarno (then the offensive line coach at LSU and a 12 year NFL veteran) worked with me at LSU and I deep snapped three years here," he said.

"I'm confident that I can handle it in the NFL, if I can just get the chance."

Guidry graduates in May from McNeese and he as well as his wife Erin and sons Kaleb and Gabriel are hoping his first job out of college will be in the NFL.

Our local media reported that Coastal OL Antoine Trice has a workout scheduled with Jacksonville. I can't remember the date.
