I love it. Colgate "makes money" on I-AA football. Yea right.
Revenues: $3,534,011
Expenses: $3,277,347
What do you want to bet that "Revenue" includes institutional need based grant given to the program? At approximately 60 equivalencies at approximately 40,000 a pop, that's $2,400,000 of "Revenue". Looks like the revenue is more like $1,134,011 and that I could believe.

looking at the PL, it seems there are 3 models: break even, show a profit with insitutional aid, or honesty. G'Towns the only honest one I think!

You bring up a great point, as ever, on these funny accounting numbers. Remember though that Colgate made the I-AA championship this fiscal year, and had 2 extra home games (that did pretty well attendance-wise if I remember right). You did also have that game in Florida - and Chatty - there's your 3 million there :D.
Lehigh "lost" money in football in the 2003 season:
Revenues: $2,316,287
Expenses: $2,735,715
Now I'm not an insider on the numbers, but I'd bet that a lot of this number:
Not Allocated by Gender:
Revenues: $5,253,919
Expenses: $2,409,325
are part of the general athletic scholarship fund, which comes from private individuals, which comes from football boosters among others (wrestling, men's b-ball). This "profit" covers a huge "loss" in women's sports, and all other men's sports, which results in a athletic department "profit".
Where the grants-in-aid come in is anyone's guess, but I'd guess it's a part of the football expenses. It's very similar to last year's numbers, actually (2 consecuitve non-playoff years).

Wow, check out the difference in bugets between BCS schools and other D-I schools....
Somehow Georgia Southern posted a profit and Wofford was in the red...big time.

Holy Cross' kill me:
Revenues
Basketball $1,263,623 $1,038,561 $2,302,184
Football $2,938,306 $2,938,306
Expenses
Basketball $1,263,623 $1,038,561 $2,302,184
Football $2,938,306 $2,938,306
Not only is it funny about their "fiscal discipline", they spent nearly as much on football as Colgate and Lehigh - ouch :D

You're on the right track. I believe the preferred term is "direct institutional support" (subsidy). Without it, the average I-AA school loses $3.7 million per year on athletics. Colgate would lose even more.

If my math is right, reserved parking at Delaware Stadium this year is $14 per game. I haven't heard if they're also raising the price of general parking.

Some of the football revenues puzzle me. We get 23,000 a game at an average $23 per seat and make roughly $500,000 a game before expenses. Take 7 home games times $500,000 and that's $3,500,000. Our revenue is listed as $3,800,000. So that makes sense.
Now, I'm looking at some I-AA's that average less than 10,000 a game and I'll bet they charge less per seat and they have revenues that are in the $3 mil. to 3.5 mil. How did they do that when they only make $150K to 200K a home game? And they only played one body bag game? 6 home games at $200K plus a $400K body bag game garners revenue of $1,600,000.
By the way, it looks as though Montana DOES NOT count Grizzly Scholarship Association fees and contributions towards our revenues. To sit between the 30's on both sides you pay I think $250 a year per two seats on top of your $23 per game. That's another couple million that doesn't seem to be added to our revenues.

Obviously, they don't.
Many schools are including heavy subsidies in their revenue figures. See my earlier post in this thread.

For the Griz, there wouldn't be 23K at $23 a seat unless you charge students 23 bucks a seat. Don't think so. Very doubtful student fees would reimburse anywhere near 23 bucks a seat.

I-A road games make all the difference in the world. ASU will more than double last year's total revenue in just two games.
Good example is GSU..had better home attendance than most of the SoCon yet brought in only 800K.
Everybody has some work to do. I wonder if Elon brought in enough to cover the coaches' salaries? You had "damn" by Chatt's yet they brought in more bucks than Elon's and spent a million less..

Students get charged $7 a game and only about 3-4,000 show up. I averaged the tickets to $23 because 2 Games last season charged $35 a seat, the MSU game and Homecoming.

The school is about 50% regular kids and 50% tree huggers that could care less about football. I think they allot 4000 student tickets but many of those are bought at $7 by students and then scalped for $20 to regular fans. I've bought student tickets before and half the student section is old folks. Yes thank God we don't have to count on students to support the program, our fan base is the working joes in Missoula and across the entire state of Montana.

Ronbo, I think the reason you're seeing some numbers that look strange to you is the way some schools do their accounting internally. JSU's revenues, as reported, all EXACTLY equal the expenses for every sport. How can that be?
I believe it's because JSU doesn't count athletic revenue as a separate category from the rest of the university's money, and atheletic revenue simply goes into a giant pot with everything else. So when JSU lists "athletic revenue" in these reports, they're listing money used to pay the athletic department's bills, which is simply the money the school budgets to pay for sports. So for many of the schools, at JSU anyway, we're not really seeing how much money sports programs are bringing in with ticket sales, merchandising, etc. Just how much they spend.
That's a shame, because we're only getting half the picture. Perhaps they're afraid of anti-football and anti-sports forces getting ahold of the numbers and pointing out the giant negetive signs.

"Better home attndance than everyone in the SoCon by far."
Hmm. Depends on:
1. What is meant by "by far."
2. Which year.
'04 GSU led ASU by 1500 per game.
'03 GSU led ASU by 1100 per game. ("by far"???)
'02 Citadel and ASU led GSU ("not al all")
'99 ASU led GSU ("not at all')
'98 ASU led GSU. (again)
