View Full Version : Appalachian State at Virginia Tech 2011 Game Thread

Second of three FBS-FCS game threads for Week 1.
Background
---
Virginia Tech leads, 3-0. (last game was way back in 1982, Hokies won it 34-0)
About Virginia Tech
---
2010 Record: 11-3
FCS game for 2010: Lost to James Madison 16-15
Bright spots: Pass defense
Weak spots: Lost many (especially on offense) to graduation, rush defense
Discuss. My prediction: Let's see what we have here. Both lost a lot to graduation, but I think VT gets the better half of the game, and wins it by a somewhat close margin.

The JMU vs. VT score was 21-16, but that's not really that important I guess as long as you point out that we won.
I think Appy makes this one interesting. Something in 7 point range, win or lose, Virginia Tech will hear it after the game.

Bad year for Appy to go to Blacksburg. After the JMU embarassment last year, a game they had 4 days to prepare for, the Hokies will be more than ready to play Appy, who after watching the VU playoff game last year, didn't do a lot for me. VaTech is breaking in a new QB but I'll say VT by 17-20.

I think ASU makes it interesting, but VT pulls away in the 4th Quarter. If ASU plays out of their minds and gets a bounce or two to go their way, they could pull off the upset but I doubt it.

Ill go with 59-14 Va Tech. This game has Big Blowout written all over. Probably 28-0 after 1. 45-0 at the half. And then Vatech lets up. This is going to be a beat down of epic proportions.

You must have Florida mixed up with someone who could stay on the field with Va tech this year or last. That Florida team who destroyed App State last year was not good. Va Tech would have handled them. James Madison beat them because they were asleep. The were comatose. Not because they were a better football team. Reality will hit the App homers and their minions hard next weekend.

I think App plays it pretty close for first quarter or 2. However, the score will end up being VT by at least 24. VT always has a pretty good defense, but it always seems like their offense sputters toward the beginning of games.

Logan Thomas is their starter this year. He's either a Sophomore or Redshirt Freshman I believe. Big kid, about 6-6 or so with a really strong arm and very highly regarded out of high school. He's got little to no game experience but a world of talent, so it's hard to say how he'll do. Losing Tyrod Taylor and their top 2 RB's is a big loss for any offense, so I'm hoping that the inexperience under center and in the backfield will work in our favor. Winning the game would be a long shot, but if the defense plays well then I'm hoping we can at least make it interesting.
biggie
August 23rd, 2011, 04:23 PM
Hopefully (and would assume) he is more of a pocket passer, which should change their offense. Hope it helps us. And do like our D in previous years with a pocket passer instead of a dual threat.

I have concerns about the inexperience of the App O-line. I have no doubts about the wide receivers and the backfield. Their effectiveness may be limited if the O-line doesn't stop the VT defense. I'm hoping the switch to the 3-4 defense works to the good for App.
I don't see App winning this one, though a few good bounces and big plays might make it interesting. I'm looking forward to being in Blacksburg in 10 days, 29 minutes ... and counting.

Really this game will be a non-contest. Tech will be ready and so will their following. The Hokies will
start to dominate and the mastery of Jerry Moore will surface he will pull his main starters so they won't be crippled
to save the rest of his season. Special teams will be huge and could make the score a bit more one-sided. An ACC way of Welcome to FBS
is not BCS football. Take the Money, Honey!!!

Why no ASU luv gents? Any Given Saturday and all that - especially the first Saturday of the season...
Let this Hen fan throw some props ASU's way - I'm guessing Coach Moore's pissed at the way last season ended, and has spent many an hour in his man cave viewing tape of last year's JMU-VT game. If the Dukes could stop Tyrod Taylor then ASU will find a way to stop Logan Thomas (Logan Thomas?)...

I'll be pulling for App to keep it close, but I'm not sure how thats gonna work out. Logan Thomas is certainly limited in game experience, but the kid is a FREAK with a cannon and plenty of speed. The third string back taking over this year is far from unproven, and has shown to be a game changer. Should be interesting to see how app's defense holds up, and like many have said I think they will for at least a quarter or two. I'm gonna say Tech takes it 35-10, but it may be something like 21-10 going in to the fourth.

Washington Post had a write-up about the upcoming App - Tech game:
...
[Bud] Foster said the Mountaineers are more explosive than both James Madison and Georgia Tech. They pass the ball more frequently and utilize lots of multiple-receiver sets – quarterback DeAndre Presley threw for more than 2,600 yards in 2010 – but they do so after setting up a defense with a steady stream of option plays. Appalachian State averaged close to 431 yards per game last year, and about 217 came on the ground.
Presley, a player Foster said “could play anywhere in the country,” is the focal point in all of this. He’s a threat to run it on every play, but he’s got an arm and a receiver (6-foot-5 wideout Brian Quick) to match.
Allow Presley to dictate the action, and it could be a long afternoon at Lane Stadium. To avoid that, Foster says discipline will be the key, something he’s already imparted on his players early on this week.

Great article, thanks for the link!
I think ASU can hang for at least a half if our young players can handle playing in that environment. Logan Thomas is unproven but is quite a talent. If we can keep him off balance and get a few bounces to go our way, anything can happen but an upset is unlikely, especially after what happened last year.

Based on the article it has me thinking they may be afraid to send rusher after DP too quickly and should give him some WR looks. If our young WRs and Jorden do well (figure BQ will be doubled) then I can give our O a decent chance of scoring well.
Would then just be up to the D, that could get scary.

Know thy enemy - today's Wash Post has an article on VT QB Logan Thomas - big hoss (6'6" 254) from Lynchburg (how'd the Flames miss out on him?) - money quote:
“Nobody knows Lynchburg for anything but Jerry Falwell. Or they’ll talk about the Lynchburg in Tennessee where they make Jack Daniel’s,” Thomas said, the smile returning to his face. “Maybe I could give it a new name. That’s what I hope to do."
With just 26 career collegiate passes to his name, Thomas will be the biggest unknown for No. 13 Virginia Tech as it tries to turn Coach Frank Beamer’s 25th season at the school into a memorable one...

Logan Thomas pops his ACL on the first series, which makes their offense one-dimensional. After David Wilson suffers a concussion on the second series, Frank Beamer has a heart attack on the sideline, falls over and knocks Bud Foster unconscious on his way down. The Hokies are then nothing but chickens running around with their heads cut off.

Jerry might be wishing he hadn't gone to the 3-4 defense. It will not work if you don't have spectacular DL, especially in the middle. Looks like App St's kids have given up. I remember that happening at Georgia Southern one year - GSU 54 - AppSt 7. Coach Moore called his players "sissies" after the game. Not watching the game, so it's tough to comment, but something has certainly gone wrong for the boys from Boone. I'm sure they went up there thinking they had a chance.

Hey dude, I'm not saying we'll beat Appy, but guess what? That's why we'll play the games. Any Given Saturday, remember?
(PS, You goones ALWAYS read lots more into posts than what is stated in plain English).
(PSS. But, you'll know you've got real problems if A&T kickes your a$$ next Saturday).
Especially considering their scholarship losses. A & T is playing with D2 level scholarships right now.

That was just plain awful.
Oh well.....can't wait to play the rest of the schedule A & T, Savannah, and Chatty should be good home game tune ups for the rest of the SoCon slate.
Happy that Coach Moore pulled our starters since it was pointless to risk it at the end.

Quote from the Virginian Pilot from DeAndre Presley, "I wouldn't classify them as an elite team". He wasn't impressed with the Hokies? Well dang DeAndre, what would have impressed you?

5) Enter Sandman entrance. Hard to beat seeing an entire stadium jumping.
I would talk about the game, but my therapist told me I shouldn't.

Sometimes 'tis better to keep one's mouth shut and thought to be a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Here's the quote in full context. He was in a no win trying to answer the question:
Saturday also proved that sometimes reality can be taken out of context.
Following the game, USA Today and Associated Press ran a story with a headline reading "App State's Presley: Virginia Tech Not 'Elite' After 66-13 Loss." Many of those in the interview room where the postgame press conference was held felt that the published quotes did not fit the context of ASU quarterback DeAndre Presley's actual response to what seemed to be a leading question.
The following is the quote used in the USA Today story:
"Not taking anything away from them, but I wouldn't classify them as an elite team," Presley said after the game. "We stopped ourselves so many times. ... We made them look better than what they were. I believe so."
Here is the question exactly as it was asked to Presley and fellow senior Ed Gainey following the loss:
Q: "Are you guys able to say that this was an elite team and a bigger classification and just kind of brush it off that way?"
Ed Gainey: "Not at all. We made a lot of mistakes and we brought this upon ourselves. They are a good football team but we feel we're just as good as they are."
DeAndre Presley: "I feel the same way. Not taking anything away from them but I wouldn't classify them as an 'elite team.' Like Ed said, we stopped ourselves so many times. When you get the ball inside your 20, you've got to score and that's exactly what they did. They capitalized on our turnovers and our mistakes, I believe so. I'm not taking anything away from them but I think we made them look better than what they were."
The question left the student-athletes - both leaders on their team - in a no-win situation. Had they responded affirmatively, they're telling their teammates, coaches and fans that they feel like they didn't belong on the same field as Virginia Tech. If they answer as they did - admitting that they were outplayed by a good team but refusing to say that they're not in the same class as the 11 guys lined up across from them - they're accused of having no respect for an opponent that just vanquished them.
Additionally, the comments deleted from Presley's published quote would have helped better shape the context of his response, as you can see above. Presley is one of the most humble and respectful student-athletes to come through an Appalachian program that prides itself on class and to those who heard his response first-hand on Saturday, it was clear that he meant no disrespect to an equally classy Virginia Tech program.
However, it does not change the fact that both he and Gainey feel that the Mountaineers are much more capable than what they showed Saturday at Lane Stadium. Personally, I'd rather hear two players admitting that the team made mistakes that helped take the ballgame down an out-of-control path rather than them feeling like, competitively, they didn't belong there in the first place.

BS. That is spin. The correct response is "They are a great team. They beat our butts by 53 and now we need to regroup and concentrate on getting better. All our big picture goals are still in front of us so we need to get back to work Monday and get ready for A&T."

Politicians have made that "out of context" line famous. read the words as one said it and it is what it is.

We may not have agreed on the other thread, but we agree on this one. The above was the correct response. and Presley better hope they are an elite team.

Right. So read the words as they were said. I'd think the longer quote would help you do that more effectively, no?

Well it is also easy for us to sit at home in front of the computer and think for 5 minutes and then type what he "should have said," but maybe when you are sitting in the press room at Lane stadium (after getting absolutely humiliated in front of 70,000) with the entire ACC media asking probing questions then you are more likely to say stuff that in retrospect may be ill-advised.

Jesus, I hate to agree with you but that was SO dumb. I know that much of this can be chalked up to what happens when you put a mic in the face of a 21 year old who just got embarrassed in front of 60-70K, but I was still shocked. You can talk all you want about how badly you played but when you are asked about the quality of a team that just beat you by 53 points, no matter what you think, you say "VT is a great team who played a great game today". End of quote.

As for DP's comments, I think, if you change "Wouldn't classify them as an elite team" to "Couldn't classify them as an elite team" you would get closer to what DP was trying to say. At least, from what I saw in the game that's what I would say. VT is a very good team that was totally primed and pumped for that game. While, with a score like this, I hope they prove to be an elite team, I'm worried App State made them look elite...meaning we may have some serious challenges this year. Yes we've had some lopsided losses but I've been watching App State football since the early 80s and I can't recall being manhandled like this by anyone...except for maybe the App State v Clemson team in 83(?) when they had William "Refrigerator" Perry.
Gainey's comment sounds more like what the coaches say just before a game like this, not what you expect to hear in a news conference after being traunced, stomped on, crushed, humiliated, etc. It's just unfortunate.xsmhx

Moving up to FBS doesn't seem so fun now eh?
Well, definitely if a move up still required ASU to compete with 22 less scholarships and the same budget. Fortunately, those two things would not hold true. Would we be able to compete with a BCS national championship contender? Maybe not, but we'd probably have a better chance.
