Spring football drills start Saturday

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Sixty-three players will be on the field when spring football starts Saturday as the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits get ready for their third season of Division 1-AA competition.

The Jacks return 43 lettermen, including 14 starters, from last year's 6-5 season. They'll prepare for an 11-game schedule that includes four home games.

Four of the seven road games are against teams that made the NCAA Division 1-AA playoffs last season: Montana, Northern Iowa, Nicholls State and Cal Poly.

Head coach John Stiegelmeier said about 10 players are sitting out with injuries - including quarterback Andy Cardoes. . . . (read more)

Jacks start spring with several holes to fill

The South Dakota State University football team began its spring practice Saturday, kicking off a month of hard work that will culminate in the Spring Game, set for April 29 at 10 a.m.
“We need to work extremely hard,” head coach John Stiegelmeier said. “The mental focus is the key to being a better football player and doing things better.”
The Jacks will practice four days a week, lift weights the other two and have Sundays off, as the team has its first practice sessions since losing several key members of the Jackrabbit program. . . . (read more)
