Appalachian State has taken a step toward playing football at the NCAA’s bowl subdivision level.
An ASU study committee voted Monday to recommend to ASU chancellor Ken Peacock pursuing a move from the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to a source close to ASU athletics.
It will be up to Peacock whether to support and forward the recommendation to ASU’s board of trustees for final approval. No time has been announced for that next possible step.
The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because no official announcements have been made.
ASU, which has played football at the Division I FCS level (formerly Division I-AA) since 1981 as a member of the Southern Conference, will continue to do so at least until future steps take place. To play in the FBS, ASU will have to find membership in an FBS conference.
The 11-member study committee has been evaluating the feasibility of a move to the FBS since January. The possibility of continuing conference moves and potential openings at the FBS level — which could spark another round of membership changes among FBS conferences — played a role in the committee’s decision to recommend making the move.
The FCS, in which ASU currently competes, can offer as many as 63 scholarships for football. FBS programs must offer at least 77 and can offer as many as 85 scholarships.
A move to the FBS would cost Appalachian more but also would generate more revenue.
ASU won three straight FCS national titles from 2005 through 2007 and has won or shared the last six Southern Conference championships. The Mountaineers have led all FCS programs in home attendance each of the past four years and have outdrawn some FBS programs, with an average of 24,775 a game (including playoff games).
