Dartmouth: Memorial Field Downsizing

Okay, not to be offensive or anything, but my high school of 1,500 kids in a freakin' suburb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa has a stadium twice as big as that.

THAT PHOTOS SHOW THE VISITORS SIDE OF THE STADIUM ONLY. THE HOME SIDE IS AS BIG OR BIGGER THAN THE 2005 PHOTO. I WOULD GUESS THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SEAT 15,000 AFTER THESE RENOVATIONS.

As I understand it, Dartmouth is building a new athletic building behind the field and needed the space. Dartmouth attendance is well below its former 20,000 capacity, so the stands were reduced.

The visitors side was always larger than the home side. I'd guess this leaves the field at around 10,000. A picture of the field is below:

I believe the reason that they were downsizing was because attendence was not that high and they figured that they didn't need stands that were so big. The Vermont vs. New Hampshire High School Shrine Football Game has a larger fan base than any dartmouth home game.

Back in the 60's and 70's, they needed 20,000 for homecomming, but they don't draw anything close to that anymore.

Have the finally installed plumbing on the visitors side yet?

The home grandstand is untouched and still holds 10,000. My guess is that the new capacity is about 13,000. That's still probably more than they've gotten for any game over the last 20 years.

Okay, then I retract my statement.

I will change it instead to my high school's conference members Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Washington, and Kennedy play in a stadium bigger than that. Seats 16,000 fans.

The way that the Indians - oops, sorry, the Green - have played for the last 20 years or so, they could rope off an area in the admissions department parking lot and it would be sufficient.

Memorial Field is an idyllic football setting in mid-October. I have seen some wonderful Colgate-Dartmouth and Princeton-Dartmouth games there. Even on a reduced scale it will be a nice experience for the fan.

I'd change that to the last 7 years or so. Are you forgetting the Ivy League They shared titles in '90 and '92 and won outright in '91 and '96, inlcuding going 10-0 in '96.

Only recently has Dartmouth football become a joke.
