A mixed bag for Southeastern's offense. The offense got sacked 20 times, threw three interceptions and had one other turnover. The offense did score on nearly 20% of their drives however. It seems like the freshman QB outpaced the senior QB for the Lions, but this was just one scrimmage, so you can't base things off the production in this one...

SOUTHEASTERN SCRIMMAGE SIGNALS START OF FINAL WEEK OF SPRING DRILLS

The Southeastern Louisiana Lions worked for roughly two hours Saturday morning scrimmaging on the turf of Strawberry Stadium.

The offense posted five scores in 27 offensive series while the defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions, and recorded an impressive 20 sacks – although that total might be a bit deceiving.

“I saw good things on both sides of the ball today,” replied second-year Southeastern head coach Dennis Roland. “(Quarterback) Brandon Jones had an especially good day and (receiver) Byron Ross started to show what he is capable of. Our defense as a whole continues to be impressive with their speed and athleticism.

“But where it’s a little misleading is on the offensive line. I wanted to test our quarterbacks to see how they would react with a ton of pressure and that resulted in a lot of sacks. We’re very thin right now on the o-line with over half our projected starters out. But that may be a good thing by letting our quarterbacks work in those scenarios and also allowing our younger offensive linemen to gain more experience prior to the fall.”

We may have as much team speed as anybody in the country on defense and rushing the passer will be a major strength for us next fall. Combine that with the fact most of our starting off linemen are out right now with injuries and it's not surprising there were a lot of sacks in a long scrimmage.

20 sacks!?!!?! is that really a good thing, that doesn't say much about your offensive line or your QB, two of the most important positions on the field.

Perhaps you didn't read the part where several of our starters are out right now on the offensive line. It was a long scrimmage with a ton of snaps and there was a lot of blitzing and stunting designed to put our QBs in pressure situations. Actually, our QBs played pretty well, particularly Brandon Jones who most people think will be the starter. We have an exceptionally quick and fast front seven and I predict we'll be causing problems for a lot of QBs in '06.

So is you defense good or just running past below average offensive lineman and making sacks?

20 SACKS?!!---Is the cheer this year going to be "Paper or Plastic?"! Hopefully things improve upfront, otherwise, some may be ready to 'bag' the season...:D

Obviously with several starters missing it was a combination of both but the 20 number has more to do with the way the scrimmage was conducted than anything else. But we are good up front on defense and will be doing that to a lot of people this fall, not just ourselves.

It's a misleading stat due to the nature of the scrimmage. We're going to be just fine along the offensive line once we get everyone healthy and our newcomers show up in the fall.
