Austin Peay Extends McCray's Contract

Carroll McCray, head coach of Austin Peay, currently in the process of leading them to the land of scholarships and as a full-blown member of the OVC had his contract extended yesterday. This extension will take him through 2008, giving him a chance to lead the Governors through their first two years in the OVC.

Smart move by Peay to show a commitment to the move up and to their coach. Peay went 2-9 last year in McCray's third season.

Good news for Coach McCray. :hurray: He has a reputation of developing some pretty good OL who went on to the NFL (coached at South Carolina before a stop at Samford). Got his start in coaching at App State.

Give the real playmakers at Austin Peay some credit.

This time, there's no doubt they made the right call.

With the three-year contract extension handed out to Govs football coach Carroll McCray, the administration signed off on the football program's stability.

With Austin Peay making the transition back to scholarship football, and an '07 return to the OVC, maintaining the continuity of the coaching staff should've been priority No. 1. It's hard to recruit legitimate Division I-AA football talent if the prospects are unclear about the status of those recruiting them.

Former Govs see positives in move to OVC

Many of those in town for Austin Peay's football reunion weekend are pleased with, and excited about the changes occurring with the Govs football program. And they can't wait for their 2007 re-entry into the Ohio Valley Conference.

"It's very exciting as a football alumni to see Austin Peay going back to scholarship football," said Chris Tucker, 37, who was a tight end and finished playing football in 1989. "You come for Homecoming and you're playing people you've never heard of. Going back to the OVC you're going to play traditional rivals, so it will be good to see Austin Peay playing those games.

"It's going to be a struggle at first. But I think eventually, if they do things the right way, they can get to where they'll be competitive and maybe win the OVC."
