Me and two of my friends are planning a weekend trip up to the 1,000 island area to go fishing for Northern Pike at the end of April beginning of May. Does anyone know of good places to go up there for a first timer? None of us have ever gone fishing for anything as large as pike so we're pretty much blind other than knowing a few basics. We need advice on a good pole setup for pike fishing. I'm used to spinning reels but i'm assuming a baitcasting reel is better for pike? I plan on using a lot of inline spinners and such and perhaps try a couple other things. I've done a lot of bass and pickeral fishing so a lot of my gear is tailored for that type of fishing. But a couple of the guys i work with convinced me that being so close, about 3.5 hours, to great pike fishing it is to tempting to pass up.

I've never fished for Pike, as a "west of the continental divide" Montanan, but my advice is to get a looooong pair of pliars for removing the hook. Those things will mess up your fingers something fierce. Heck my dad couldn't stop the bleeding from a Brown trout! Maybe it was a Bull, but I think it was a Brown.
Those Pike will mess you up if you aren't careful.
