“That would be the best thing that could happen to college football, and probably college basketball and college athletics in general,” Pelini said. “That’s my opinion. I think that would be a tremendous move. I don’t know if there’s a lot of momentum for that.”

Pelini’s reasoning? Such a move would improve the recruiting process and give freshmen a chance to mature, not only football-wise, but especially with academics.

“Let’s slow this thing down a little bit,” Pelini said, “and make them ineligible.”

What are your takes here? The Ivy only leveled their field with freshmen in the 1990's, much later than their other peers.

I think it's an idea worth revisiting even though Lew Alcindor's (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) freshman team beat the UCLA varsity team.

When I played in 1970, freshmen were ineligible to play varsity. We played about 5 games versus various schools in the region. I think, on balance, that if the mission of college athletics is to nurture Student-athletes, limiting the time demands on 18 year olds who are acclimating to being away from home, new friends, new 'freedoms', and for many tough new course material, it is a good idea.
