View Full Version : Toughest four game stretch to open the season

So who has the toughest road...straight out of the gate?
I will nominated my alma mater, Chattanooga.
@ Nebraska
Jacksonville State
@ Eastern Kentucky
@ Appalachian State
I will say this...there is not a rational person that could claim Russ Huesman is dodging tough competition, or eating any cupcakes.
I know there have to be some other really tough opening skeds to start the season...whatcha got?
(if your school is playing any Non-DI's to start the season, that is an automatic disqualification :))

Nice one. I would definitely put that one over Chattanooga...4 roads games, 2 BCS...and neither EKU or SIU are chopped liver. OUCH.
Any got something to knock Missouri State off the top?

And only their 4 home conference games, so a 4 home, 7 away games. MSU will likely get picked to finish last in MVFC this season. Which, as MSUBears oints out will be the end of the HC at MSU.

We pretty much knew this year was going to be a wash away year anyways, coach is on the hot seat and we lost alot of players from last year. Not to mention, we need the cash for stadium expansion.

They visit GSU on October 8. There's a real possibility they could be out of the playoff conversation before the first frost despite having a pretty good team.

All 3 will obviously be tough, but wouldn't be real surprised to see the Yotes upset the Eagles. The Dome will be rocking for the home opener.
Air Force is parents weekend at the Academy and will be fun to be part of all the pagentry that goes with a game at any of the academies. Wisconsin isn't Minnesota (we are still in transition but unlike the Rabbits, already a W over an FBS team) , but hoping to make the trip and participate in the pregame festivities at Camp Randall.

D1 wins so far in transition (not just in the last 2 years)
2008-2010
UND 9-16
USD 8-17 1 win vs a FBS team
2004-2007
NDSU 31-9
SDSU 20-17 ZERO wins vs FBS
2009
NDSU 3-8
SDSU 8-4 FCS playoffs
D1 wins don't matter during transition if you go 3-8 right?
Recruiting easier for USD in the MVFC, than UND in the Big Sky because of travel? I think UND has a lot more to offer recruits (and the west is where UND recruits anyways) than USD; but who won the recruiting battle between the SU's?? NDSU got the first playoff win, but SDSU got their first. DI wins 2008-2010 SDSU 20-15, NDSU 18-18.

I have no real allegiance to any FCS team. I am just a fan of the game at all levels. I suppose this makes me somewhat objective.
Anyway, whether totally objective or only slightly subjective, my take after reading the entire thread is that Missouri State is the hands down "winner" ....even though I am not sure this is much of a prize. Keeping the team from becoming discouraged early in the season will be important after suffering humiliation at the hands of Arkansas and Oregon....and its not like Missouri State gets a couple of cupcakes in between
Oh, well, hopefully Arkansas will still be trying to work out the kinks in its offense after losing Mallet...or maybe Oregon will be distracted by the NCAA investigation......

Transition doesn't mean sh-t if you can't win when you become playoff eligible case in point...NDSU! King of the transition period. Ranked #1 in the polls, finished a 10-1 season, then became playoff eligible and went 6-5?, then the next year 3-8? Big deal if UND hasn't played the perfect transition, its playing perfect post transition that counts. We will see starting in fall of 2012 which UXD team fairs better....btw good luck this season!!xthumbsupx

Yes playoffs are most important, I get that, not arguing that point. But don't overlook what having a good team in transition can do. It builds excitement, creates a run on season tickets, inspires alumni to give, etc. It's no coincidence that my registration here and at Bisonville, my attendance of games home and away, and buying NDSU gear correspond to this transition time period. It's also worth saying that my following of the NFL and NBA on tv, and going to pro games dropped off at the same time and is at zero right now.

Writing comprehension would help too. When you say 'Chattanooga football has arrived', you are stating that it has already happened. 'Has' is a present-tense verb. If 6-5 means you have arrived, then congratulations. In the meantime, I will do my best to deal with what you said with minimal laughter.

Please prove something before you start claiming you are here. Again, 6-5 is not here. Make the playoffs for a couple of years(or at least one) before you start claiming supremacy. Are you related to seantaylor? If not, you two should hang out and discuss who is better(Georgia Southern or UTC):)

I'm not quite willing to say the Mocs have arrived, but I will say no one can argue that we haven't improved drastically over the past two seasons....and I like the direction the team is headed. Can we go 3-1? Yes, this Mocs team has the talent and drive to do so. it is possible, and I would say anything less would be a let down. This is the year to make the playoffs and continue to build on what Russ has started. I think we will go 3-1, but I'm still not willing to bet my life on it!!!!

Very true, from 1-11 there is only one way.... However, I think the improvement is way ahead of schedule. I felt we were realistically looking at a rebuilding process of 4 years (2-9 year one, 4-7 year two, 6-5 year three, 8-3 and playoff spot year four) before we even thought about squeeking into the playoffs (still aren't there), but we had a shot after the second year. And I feel like this will be a playoff year, hopefully with a few wins.

I definitely agree that you guys have improved drastically over the last few years, I was just giving the other Chattanooga guy a hard time over some bold statements. This time 2 years ago, UTC was a 'gimme' when I looked at the schedule. While I do think we'll take care of business in Boone, I now expect a serious challenge from y'all. You guys are building a program and it's been a steady improvement, but I really think the scheduling is going to make it tough for you guys to get into the postseason. Presuming a loss to Nebraska, you guys will have to go at least 7-3 or possibly 8-2 the rest of the way out. Getting out of @ASU, @Georgia Southern, @ Eastern Kentucky and home against Wofford and Jacksonville St. with only 2 or 3 losses will be tough enough, and that's assuming no slip-ups against Elon/Furman teams that you should beat but are good enough to be sneaky.
Improved and moving in the right direction? Absolutely, but I think a postseason run is still a year or 2 away.

It might have been a 4 or 5 rebuilding project if the one or two win seasons were because of personnel. That was not the case. Rodney Allison was winning his share of recruiting battles against top FCS programs when he was here. There were players who coul play the day Huesman got the job. The terrible seasons were because of a lack of coaching. Bad hire after bad hire. Chattanooga should have been in the playoffs last year, they were easily one of the 20 most talented teams in the country. A tough schedule and lack of experience derailed what should have been an 8 or 9 win regular season. This is going to be a playoff team, I don't care how diffcult the schedule is.

Been reading this thread and the Missouri Valley prediction thread. IF EKU loses to both Chatty and Mo State at HOME, it could either be the end of Hood's days in Richmond or the death of the program. EKU fans are tired of the medocrity of recent years!
Now for Hood and EKU, the old OC is FINALLY gone, we have a new OC who we hope will see the necessity of having a running game in addition to (only) throwing the football. And Hood is no longer acting as the defensive coordinator and head coach. He has promoted someone to the DC spot and he will FINALLY be the HEAD coach he was hired to be (I hope!). We must see some improvement and consistency with these changes or it will be another disappointing year for once a proud program! Go COLONELS!

Where have you been? Chatty followed up a 6-5 season with another 6-5 season, so clearly they have arrived. We should all tremble in fear and worship their mediocrity.
Clearly! Shouldn't be that hard to worship them. Afterall, their stadium IS is the Mecca of FCS Football.
You know you HAVE ARRIVED when your team goes 6-5 not one season in a row, but back-to-back baby! Oh yea, and you have to have a list of Championship games played in your stadium on your press box that tell opposing teams who you beat.. er.. who played the Championship game in your stadium (because you didn't even make the playoffs. lol)
Back to reality...
Yea UTC has a nice stadium. So nice, in addition to the town and somewhat central location, the NCAA accepted their bid to host Championship games there. However, it is NOT "The Mecca" of FCS football. My team has won TWO championship games there and I don't feel as though I have some duty to make a pilgrimage there. At all. I do however, feel as though I must tip my hat to those two flags that my team won at the place every time I enter Paulson.
The REAL must see shrines to FCS Football are:
Montana's Wa-Grizz Stadium
Delaware's Raymond Stadium
App.'s Kidd Brewer Stadium
GSU's Paulson Stadium
and YSU's Ice Palace.
One could ever argue for the Harvard and Yale stadiums to be included in that b/c of the history.
What do all of those stadiums have that Finley doesn't? Championship Banner's. It isn't the "Mecca of FCS Football" for the same reason Pizza Hut Park isn't going to become the next "Mecca of FCS Football"; because the home team doesn't have any FCS Championship banners.
I'm sure we can bring our 6 when we visit UTC in '12. Then they can fly them in respect of our history. Oh wait I forgot that we will have 7 in '12. I guess we will have to bring the extra flag pole for them as well.

Hopefully something along the lines of "Holy ****, that is our stadium!?!? We aren't a middle school, we are DI!! We have to do something about that. Let's schedule two money games w/ FBS schools each season until we can afford an actual stadium."

Jacksonville was very solid last year. I for one thought they should have gotten a playoff bid. I don't know how many key players they graduated, but the Dolphins could end up being a bigger challenge than Norfolk. Who do you rank higher, a middling MEAC team, or a champion PFL team?

If you add in Oklahoma and Appalachian State, the Mocs can claim that they have played a national championship game participant the last 6 years in a row. And those teams went 5 for 6.
A Nebraska publication (half) jokingly referred to Chattanooga as "the kingmakers"
No wonder why the Mocs have had no trouble booking FBS teams. Their next four schedules are: Nebraska, Wisconsin, South Florida and Tennessee. USF is very excited to know that they will be in the title game in 2013. :)

As more FBS teams opt to schedule FCS games, there are quite a few tough early schedules for all of us, however, looking at the first four games, Cal Poly and South Dakota take the cake (not necessarily a good thing). UC Davis also has a real tough early schedule. The Great West went insane for their final season!!!

It should work our schedule kicks major @ss in 2012 minus the NAIA game against SD Mines. Our home schedule is SD Mines, Central Arkansas, Cal Poly, N. Arizona, Montana, and Southern Utah plus being playoff eligible how could you stay home.
That doesn't look much differrent than a normal years schedule. The und student body has successfully tuned out football for almost a decade now, I don't see why anything will change.
As far as the sioux becoming a competive team goes, I think you are being way to optimistic. UND first of all is not a football school, and everyone knows it, including recruits, especially regional recruits. Our coach doesn't appear to be any good. Your comparison between xdsu and uxd doesn't really work, because both teams had plenty of success, and ndsu is currently the top dog in minndak, at least until the next gopher game. Uxd's have struggled, but und especially seems to be regressing in the post lennon/thomas era and that regression doesn't appear to be limted to football.
Und is in the worst shape of the four, and I don't think it will change until we get a new coach and athletic director (and fire an underachieving chokeartist of a hockey coach)
