UND will soon announce it is leaving the men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association for a new, startup conference in 2013-14, the Herald has learned from multiple sources.
At least five other teams will join UND in this league: Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota-Duluth and Miami (Ohio).
Notre Dame and an eighth school — possibly Western Michigan — also could be added to this group by the end of the summer.

Western Michigan? Not Northern? Go figure
I suppose the possibility exists for some catch-all conference to take the remaining teams, if they can handle putting the Alaska schools in the same conference. Or get Alabama-Huntsville into a conference. There could be some huge shifts coming to the landscape
I'm interested (and a bit concerned) about what this could mean for some of the remaining CCHA schools, like Bowling Green or Ferris, who have had budget concerns
I'm also afraid to see what the USCHO board looks like right now.... xreadx

Don't get too excited...Notre Dame has not made a decision either way...they could just as well head east and join the best conference in HE!
This new conference though should end up with a scheduling deal with the Big Ten so they will play each other a lot...thus increasing the competitiveness of the overall college game. I know a lot of people in the schools left out are unhappy...but it does come down to $$$ and those successful schools appear tired of carrying the light weights.

A lot of Sioux fans actually would rather they grabbed Bemidji State or Bowling Green instead of Western Michigan. Sounds like the remaining WCHA and CCHA teams may merge into 1 conference. Funy how the BTHC is going to stick with just 5 teams, thats a lot of OOC games.

The Big 10 will be at 6 because of Penn State. They need that 6th team to exist and still have the NCAA autobid, plus the rumored bylaw about 6 teams being necessary for the Big 10 to start a conference.

Oh thats right, forgot about Penn State. Its easy to forget about a team who will just be starting up in hockey. Kinda like how Minnesota State-Moorhead wants to start up hockey and play right away in the WCHA..well MSUM you may get your chance when the big boys clear out.

UND will play in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference beginning with the 2013-14 season.
UND, Denver, Colorado College, Minnesota-Duluth, Miami of Ohio and Nebraska-Omaha will comprise the new league.
It’s possible Notre Dame and Western Michigan will also join the new league at a later date.

Idk if you can compare penn state to msum ever. I dont think you can even compare their toilets.
If they can get over 110 thousand people to a single football game. Im sure they can fill a hockey arena with comparible crowds to a und game.

Ask Ohio State about attendance when it comes to hockey. http://www.uscho.com/stats/attendance/division-i-men/2010-2011/
Ohio State averaged 3,829 or 21.9% capacity (ranked 18th). Football 105,278 (ranked #2 in the FBS)
North Dakota averaged 11,756 or 101.0% capacity (3rd in college hockey). Football 8154

Yeah, tOSU is a warning against the pratfalls of an unsuccessful program. PSU will fill their arena for a couple of years, especially with the Big 10 opponents. If they don't show any real kind of success, those crowds won't last

Exactly. If PSU has a good year their first year the crowds will be good but if the first year they are winless or end up like a Michigan Tech then people are not going to go to that when they can go to PSU bball. Hockey schools like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan can fill both football and hockey despite their records but a new program may not be able to fill both if they are NOT successful.

There are sports between football and baseball season? Down here football season ends in December (or even January) and baseball gets on the field in February.

Well, they're not going to Penn State basketball games, either xlolx

If Penn State establishes a reason for alumni and students to come out and watch their hockey team they will do very well...but they must make that effort to start as the program is upgrading from club status. Market the hell out of it and make it a fun time for the students/fans and they will see a solid fan base form over time. I applaud them for taking up the game at the Varsity level...I hope we see more programs start up int he future across the north!

Any other "winter" sports are irrelevant in the minds of und fans.
But anyway, I am not excited for B1G hockey...outlook doesn't look too great right now IMO but once it gets started it'll hopefully be for the better. If it doesn't go well, then thank you Barry Alvarez ruining a good thing.

The best thing about Big Ten hockey is that the games will be on the Big Ten Network. So the games will not only be on in the Chicago market, but also in areas such as Nebraska, Indiana and Iowa. Not saying any other schools will start teams, but it will expand the game's covergae and you never know what might happen.

Maybe the state of Nebraska will cut a deal and allow UNO to go DI if Lincoln starts up a college hockey team. They have had a popular USHL team in Lincoln as in Omaha. UNO is a great draw and Hockey has always been popular with Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk and Marcel Pronovost all playing minor league hockey in Omaha with the defunct Knights.

The wrestling team won something like ten DII national championships, including this year. I read on a wrestling message board that Alberts (or one of his minions) called the coach the night they won the title to tell him he was out of a job. Bastard.

I love Nebraska football...but Trev Alberts is a douche. It would have been nice to have UNO go DI in football.

Can you imagine what the UNO football program was thinking? "Wow, we are going FCS and getting Trev Alberts as AD. That will open some doors for us, maybe a game or two in Lincoln to help pay the moving bills and get us on the map.".

Literally that is what happened. As soon as they reached the locker room he got a call. They won their 3rd straight and when they got back to campus EVERYTHING was locked up. pathetic.
