This means we may not hear from the old guy for a few weeks but I'm sure he'll have some whopper stories to tell about the fish he gets from the store.....er, Bitterroot River!

I don't get it. Are one of the people mentioned, or is the author, Grizo?

The skwala hatch is great on the Bitterroot. I'll be home in Hamilton next week so if anyone wants to meet up on the river, PM me.

The skwala hatch on the Bitterroot river in Montana is well known among fly fisherman across the entire country. It is famous not only because of the fish activity but because it is the earliest one of the year in the north west.
Additionally, the hatch happens here before spring runoff starts so water level in the river is still winter time low. GREAT fishing!!! People come from all over just to fly fish this time of year. Big doings around here and I'm sure Grizo won't have any competition buying night crawlers for the next month and a half!

Is FINALLY HERE!!!
Have yet to see very few adult skwalas, but the young ones I'm starting to see make me happy! Happy enough to put up with VictorG's slings, and barbs about my fishing expertise.
The last time I fished with bait, VictorG still offered to pay for the "next round", Johnny Carson was the King of late night TV, and you could sleep with whoever you wanted to, and worst case scenerio...only end up with a guilty conscience 3 days later.
That seems like a pretty long time to me, but Victor does like his worm fishin'. I can't fault him for not having the hand/eye coordination thing down. I couldn't have any competition buying Night Crawlers, because "you know who" seems to have bought every available one through out the Flathead/Bitterroot Valley.   xlolx :D

I give you grief about your fishing expertise because I know that your idea of fly fishing is pulling you zipper down and wading into the river up to your waist!!!   :p

Those look like the stonflies I've seen here. What size are those? 12?

Not sure of the size, Tribe, but I think you're probably pretty close. As the weather gets warmer here, the skwalas get bigger, and the real fun begins. I've never been a big fan of the larger flies.
I got that pic from northwesttrout.com...in a futile attempt to shut down "The Voice" of "I Just Can't Seem To Get It When It Comes To Fly Fishing"...down. It hasn't worked yet, but I'll keep trying.
Right now, my favorites are the Wooly Hellgrammite, the Montana Stonefly Nymph, and the Early Brown Stone Nymph. They are bigger fies than I like to fish with, but they have been productive, and I'll continue to use them.

This is definitely the time of year for big nymphs. I've been tying some woolly buggers up but instead of using chenille I use dubbing so it ends up looking really buggy. They can pass for stonefly nymphs or hellgrammites, although I don't know if Hellgrammites are present in Wisconsin.

Throw in woolly buggers from Tribefans posts and what you have here is Grizo describing his private parts, and all his "lady" friends!:) :) :D

I just wanted to say, my bad. I misunderstood with the word "stories" in the title of the thread, and then the article that was linked. Wasn't being a smartazz. :o :o :o
My dad moved back to his hometown of Hamilton a couple/few years after my mom died, and he told me he won't fish in the Bitteroot because there are so few fish and they're small (I think that's what he said, but regardless, he doesn't get enjoyment fishing the Bitteroot). What advice can I pass on to him?
