There is more to the total package than just salary. It is a pretty good portion in FCS, and probably a good indicator of how the total package ranks amongst others, but many of the top 10 can make an additional lump for camps, tv shows, endorsements (free car lease to appear in a few commercials for a local dealership), etc.

Tony Samuel at SEMO made a whopping $96k last year! After a 9-3 season and being named the National Coach of the Year, he signed a new contract worth $125k plus he gets a percentage of all "guarrantee" money. He could have have gotten a bigger contract but chose to instead force the university to give his assistants pay raises and upgrade the facilities. The team is currently getting new locker room, new team meeting room, offices being renovated, new turf, new video scoreboard, and new lights which I believe were all promises in his contract..

Of course $104,000 at UND or $125,000 at SEMO might be the equivalent of $175,000 at one of the California schools based upon cost of living.

Our Women's basketball coach makes more than our football coach. I know there are Sioux fans that would love to see UND spend some money on a good coach and "up" the value of UND football. Right now hockey is king and football is ranking down with basketball.

Or they're schools whose administrations still think they are DII. Much of the athletic department at SEMO is run like a poor DII. The best facet of the entire department (and I'm a little biased) is the athletic training department. It is better than anyone in the OVC and many of the surrounding similar-sized schools as far as staffing goes. But everything else is BAD. And coaching salaries are just one example of that and all of our sports are pretty poor when it comes to coaching salaries...

What's up with that? I'm not knocking too much because UNC's coach makes considerably less but we've only been D1 for 7 years now. That seems low considering your a top school in the conference. How can some of the UM fans expect to go FBS with a coaching salary like this? Does he have incentives? Is that a decent wage for living in Missoula? What's your coaching salary budget??

Knowing what it takes to run a football program in terms of time, energy, mental stress etc... I can't say I envy any of these coaches. Given the cost of living in CA, I have to agree with you; the CA coaches are not getting nearly as sweet a deal as some of these other coaches.

Bohl just got a bump to $196k, that is just his base. Doesn't include TV, camps and the chunk of the gate he gets. All together he makes around $300k.

He got a contract extension after the 2009 season that didn't include a pay raise in base salary. Tough getting numbers out of a private school so that's all I have to go on now. I assumed that put Rocco in the top 5 of FCS coaches in terms of salary. He may be the highest paid coach in the FCS.

Yeah a lot of these may be hard to compare. Especially when taking into account the cost of living (higher in California for example) and the fact that some of these figures are base salary, whilest others include the total package.

Um, interesting question. Seeing how the last time App beat Wake was 2000 and Jim Grobe wasn't coach yet, so Lambert wasn't there then either; I'd say he made enough to have never lost to App.

Typical 3.2ish student from NoVA - bright, but didn't apply himself as much as he could - VCU perfect for students like him, and he's excited about going there. Nails a 3.5 1st year and he could stay or transfer to UVA or Tech (their gtd transfer program).
Interesting breakdown of in-state college choices by the vast majority of NoVA students as noted to us parents by the HS counselers - top tier UVA/Tech/W&M, middle tier JMU/Mason/VCU, safety ODU/Radford/West Virginia (ok so WVU technically is out of state, but it is a pretty nice school and not too picky about who they accept from these parts) - Richmond rarely if ever enters the conversation...

Where do the other state schools (VMI, Longwood, Christopher Newport, Virginia-Wise, etc.) fit into that model?
For a state of its size, Virginia seems to have fewer private school options as one might think--Richmond, W&L, Liberty, and it drops off from there.

Not sure of the criteria you are using...but Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon are both nice private schools. Bridgewater and Emory&Henry have long traditions as well at the DIII level.

There are some terrific private schools in Virginia, but the top-notch quality of UVA, Tech, and W&M tends to skew high schoolers' interest towards the public schools here. When you factor in the availability of multiple public options at each tier, you're not going to pay double to go to an equivalent private school here unless there's some specific special interest reason.

Jacksonville State has extended the contract of head football coach Jack Crowe through the 2014 season, Athletics Director Warren Koegel announced today.
“We are glad that we have reached an agreement with Coach Crowe and that he has signed his contract extension,” Koegel said. “I know this is something that Dr. Meehan wanted me to address in my first month on the job and I've had discussions with Coach Crowe about our football program and we are all on the same page.”
Crowe's base salary will be $162,000 per year and includes incentives if he wins the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and the FCS National Championship. He was hired as Jacksonville State's 11th head football coach in the modern day era on Nov. 22, 1999.

There are a couple others on here who'd be a better judge of this than me, but I'll give you my take.
Going to OT against Georgia Southern a week after beating Ole Miss was inexcusable. They had way too many close games last year. Crowe sems a decent enough coach, but I don't see him leading the Gamecocks to the next level. The next level being going deep in the playoffs. From reading the Jax State sports message board, I don't think he's Mr. Popularity.
That being said, as long as he wins 8-9 games a year he's not going anywhere. He just turned 64 and is signed through 2014. I think they'll need a new coach if they move up to FBS, but who knows when that will happen. I think he'll ride out the contract. If they move up, I'd be in favor of them giving him a gentle push to a retirement package with a do-nothing consultant job in the AD office.
Again, this is just my view. My only connection to JSU is being married to a former Marching Southernor who likes to go to several games a year, mainly to see the band. I don't ever talk football with any Jax State fans, although I do enjoy going to the games. The trip to Oxford last year was one of the best experiences of my life.
I'll toss the question back to you, how much longer are you going to put up with Pat Sullivan?

Pat Sullivan is under no pressure IMO. The tremendous improvements in facilities, the increased budget for football, and even the move to the SoCon are all, in one way or another, tied to him. His recruiting has been excellent and continues to be. I know Pat well enough to say that he is a tremendous competitor, and he is no more happy with the lack of Ws than we fans are. Samford did not join the Southern Conference to be a bottom feeder. Defensively we have been very competitive, but his biggest mistake has been the offensive staff. Pat was slow in getting rid of a couple of coaches because of long term friendships and in the case of the OC, a serious health problem that this coach was dealing with. The replacements, however, are top-notch IMO, and we are very excited about the new staff this year. I talked with a few of our players this spring and they all say our offense is daylight and dark compared to the past. There is definitely a new enthusiasm that hopefully will bring about better results.
