Let's see if former Paladin Clint Dempsey keeps finding the back of the net.

From a two nil lead to a meltdown and 4-2 loss. US soccer.... xsighx
No wonder all the f'in Mexicans keep cheering for the homeland. They win.

Dempsey tends to find the net more often than any of the other U.S. players.
Typically break down in defense for the yanks.

Demps is one of my favorite players on the team, even taking into account he went to Furman. :p He's had his chances in this Gold Cup and has gotten a few goals. He's also had some real stinkers - something like five missed chances in the loss to Panama.

That's an understatement. It was all over once Cherundolo went out with an injury. Every Mexican goal went through Bornstein. Oy.

First win for Mexico over the top US squad outside of Azteca since 1999 (no, I'm not counting the 2009 Gold Cup when we ran out an extremely diminished side)
Defense was getting pulled apart, especially after the Cherundolo injury. Unfortunately, Howard had a brutal game (probably the worst I've seen of his on the National Team), and couldn't bail them out
If Dempsey gets under the crossbar to make it 3-3, or if Bradley's shot doesn't curl just wide, we might have pulled it out, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Sucks to miss out on the Confederations Cup, especially now that it provides some legitimate competition. Really nothing left between here and 2014 except the qualifiers against Mexico and the diminished 2013 Gold Cup
It was a bit weird to not watch a Mexican team cheapshot the Americans, though them leading late in the game probably had something to do with it. Good to see they're still on top of the diving game though

Alexi Lalis on ESPN's review made a good point. People keep saying this is a "learning experience" for the U.S. team. At some point, they have to start playing like they are there to win, and not like they are there to participate in some other country's sport.

I think it depends on who you're talking about. For some of the younger guys on the team (Lichaj, to lesser extent guys like Jones and Adu), it is a learning experience from the standpoint of competing against a strong team in a high-pressure environment. Until we start putting multiple regulars on Champions League caliber clubs (and especially in the top leagues), games like the Gold Cup Final and one or two WC Qualifiers are going to be the extent of it
For the program? Lalas is 100% correct. If they needed yesterday as a "learning experience," then they haven't learned anything from the last 20+ years, and are unlikely to do so (insert complaint about Sunil Gulati and the USSF here)
