At the end of Day 1 of the Pennsylvania wrestling championships the 'usual suspects' were 'lined up' at 1-2-3. Nazareth (17), Easton (16) and Upper Perkiomen (13.5), all from the Lehigh Valley are leading the pack. In the last four years, Easton has 3 state titles and one runner-up. Gotta be something in the water...

Nazareth HS, home to Mario and Michael Andretti, won the 3A State title of Pennsylvania yesterday in wrestling outdistancing Bald Eagle 113.5-83.5. Upper Perkiomen was third at 72.5 followed by newcomer to the elites, Boyertown who tied Central Dauphin at 49. Remaining top 10 were: Canon-McMilan 48, Council Rock South 47, Easton Area 45.5, Clearfield 31.5 and Lewistown 31.
Easton, while slipping somewhat from it's accustomed perch still held on to a top 10 finish for the umteenth time in a row and crown it's 30 State Champ at 103 with Sophomore Jordan Oliver who finished the season 48-0 and was taken down ONCE all season. Hopefully the kid grows so he'll be able to wrestle in college where the lowest weight class is 125.
Easton had a great wrestler 25 years ago named Bobby Weaver who won 3 titles but had to wrestle underweight at Lehigh in the early 80's finishing as high as 3rd at the NCAA's despite the size disadvantage. He went on to win the Olympic Gold in the 1984 Games at 105.5--Lehigh's only Olympic gold medalist.

EIWA from Stabler arena was on Comcast Saturday night. Lehigh won the team championship. American U had a kid from Uzbekistan that was lightning quick.

Oh--I was at the EIWA when it occured on the 4th and 5th--hence the confusion. Yes, the 'alphabet man' is amazingly quick and is a definite threat for a title. Should be seeded top 4. We're sending nine out of ten wrestlers to the NCAA's which is a tremendous feat in itself.. Leaving for OK Wednesday morning!:D

I'm still amazed at the takedown fest that Muz and Zinck put on in 2005.

Since when was Upper Perk considered Lehigh Valley? That's Montgomery County last I checked. :)
