Football In The Works For Coppin State? (http://www.examiner.com/college-life-in-baltimore/football-the-works-for-coppin-state#ixzz1NroE94Yq)
Today brought about the winds of change on CSU's campus. Today marked the beginnings of a brand new football team for the school. What began as a dream of most of the students on campus is now becoming a reality.
The school has introduced the coaching staff and plans for a club football team to begin its season next fall. The team's inagural game will be against George Mason University on Septemeber 10th....
However, regardless of what you think, the school believes that the new football team will not only bring in new students, but will also be Division 1 by 2015.

Congrats Coppin State! However, I dont know if that will equate to a 12th team for the MEAC. Hopefully, my FAMU Rattlers would have moved on by then.

"The estimated cost of the football team is almost one million dollars, and the school has promised this as well as providing the players and coaches with extra equipment to further show off their eagle pride."
The April 1 date of the article notwithstanding, it would expect a lot for Coppin to ever be a I-AA team. (The school is listed on the National Club Football Association web site, but no further information is posted.)
Three factors:
1. Coppin State is 24% male but males already have 42% of scholarship aid.
2. Coppin State ranks 324th of 327 Division schools in athletic budgets ($3.6 million). Among schools w/football, only Savannah State spends less. The idea that Coppin will spend a quarter of its budget on club football is not realistic.
3. Coppin State has no available on-campus facility--the school does not even have a soccer team.
The article lists George Mason as its opening opponent. GMU's schedule still does not list an opponent for that weekend.

1) 24 percent male?? TACO FEST!!! That school is like the anti-Michigan Tech.
2) That is a TINY athletic budget for D-I. I think pathetic old Minnesota State-Moorhead spends that much on sports.
3) Coppin needs to increase its athletic budget and resources regardless of whether or not they're adding football.
4) I saw on TV last year that Coppin State and its near-bottom DI athletic program plays in a much nicer basketball facility than NDSU. (WHY can't I get any SHAC fundraising news??)

I was concerned about that date myself until I saw they started a new conference with Virginia Commonwealth and that the team was announced as official on 3/18.

Coppin State does have a brand new on-campus site. Look on Google Maps at N. Warwick Ave & Travistock Ct. and you'll see a soccer field with the Coppin State logo at midfield with a track around it. If you look at the older map on Bing there was a parking lot and possibly an older warehouse there, but once you zoom the picture changes and there is construction vehicles building the new field and new academic & athletic buildings around it as well as what appears to be an area for discus.
