A definite blow to UC-San Diego as the Big West Conference was likely their best chance at making the move to Division I. The Big West says there is a 'no vacancy' sign up in their window...
Would UC-San Diego be a potential addition to the WAC? I know the WAC has a good opportunity to snag a few current Division I members - i.e. Utah Valley, Seattle, Sam Houston, Lamar, UT-Arlington - but would an addition of a California school in a major market sooth over the west, northwest situation.
SAN DIEGO -- UC San Diego was not invited to join the Big West Conference when the league's Board of Directors met this week, the conference commissioner said Thursday.
Dennis Farrell of the Big West said the directors heard a presentation from the school on Monday, but took no action on its request for membership. That throws a major hurdle in the way of UCSD officials who want to move their athletic teams from Division II to Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
"At this point, there was no desire to move beyond the 10 members we'll have starting in 2012 and '13," Farrell told City News Service.
