They had 695 students AND had football... crazy! Was checking out their results on the CIAA web site (since their web site is beyond atrocious) and they were below sub-par. They just could not afford to maintain the program at the bare minimum and obviously - at all.
St. Paul’s is shutting down its athletics program, leaving the CIAA with 12 members.
In a closed-door meeting of the league’s board of directors today, made up of the CIAA’s 13 presidents and chancellors, St. Paul’s President Robert Satcher reported the school’s board of trustees voted to discontinue its athletic program effective July 1.
CIAA directors “received the report with sadness, but also recognizes that since the college is no longer participating in collegiate athletics, it will not continue as a member of the CIAA,” according to a statement released by the league. “In accordance with that fact, the Board acknowledges that the CIAA’s Two-Year Transfer Rule will no longer prove relevant for St. Paul’s College student-athletes who wish to transfer to any CIAA school.”

I went to a D2 school, and we didn't even have football but hell we were much bigger than that. Heck, my HS was bigger then that. Too bad for the current students there...it seems that they must have been at the minimum of sports fielded by the school because there is no way they had more than a dozen teams participating...how could they with such a small enrollment?
I saw this on the D2 website...sometimes football isn't for every school, but athletics as a whole? This school should have thought this through a long time ago probably, unless there is some unknown factors for the low student body membership...

Even without football - the school was pretty bare bones according to all indications available from a distance.

I think the bigger question facing this school going forward is whether they can even afford to stay open in the long run...I doubt their athletics budget was much.

What happends to those already low enrollment numbers after many of these kids elect to transfer to another school in order to continue to compete athletically?

This was the school that had to cancel a game last year due to lack of proper equipment. They apparently didn't pay the supplier, and the equipment and uniforms were not delivered. They were holding pre-season practice without equipment.
The school should just close. Most of the students are athletes and how many kids will hang around after their sport has been dropped?

Hate to see a school close - but you are right. The enrollment numbers will likely take a significant hit without athletics... do wonder how many of those kids were actually on scholarship or receiving some sort of athletic aid...
