Tough times for Kirby, heard he was in surgery all day Sunday. :(
Hope he can pull through.

it sounds much more serious than at first report. Everyone's prayers for "The Gentleman"

Kirby Puckett has died at age 44.

I can't help thinking that that beanball he took caused some of this.

Could be part of it. Though Puckett did some questionable things a few years ago, he was an incredible baseball player and it is very sad that he went like this at only 44 years of age.

I am sad to hear this. I have so much respect for Kirby, especially because he was a Twin.

The Gentleman?!?!

I hate to speak ill of the dead, but there is plenty of credible evidence that he was an extrmely flawed human being who was protected by the press simply because he was nice to them.

Do you have evidence, or are you spreading rumors?

What did he do that was questionable?

didn't he openly admit to beating or cheating on his wife a few years ago?

I'm not a big fan of gossip, no matter how juicy, because it brings out the worst in people. Treating allegations as fact seems like something more suited for witch hunts than a decent response to a person's death. I do not claim to know what sins Kirby Puckett committed, but am hopeful that he sought forgiveness for them and died in a state of peace and grace.

I'd rather take Kirby Puckett at face value: He played baseball with joy and treated his sport like a game. He was born with a lot of things against him but took his gifts and excelled - with joy.

I am aware of the accusations, but nothing was ever proven.

I'll remember Kirby Puckett for the way he played the game. Period.

Whatever else there was, he owes baseball fans no apologies. He gave us only his best. To his family, hopefully he made his amends.

But we shouldn't dwell on the negative upon his passing. Someday we will all need the same mercy.

Yet you're convinced Barry Bonds used steroids?

Yet you're convinced Barry Bonds used steroids?

Indeed, the Twins used to wear T-shirts that read "I wanna be like Puck." (Do you think there are "I wanna be like Barry" T-shirts in San Francisco's clubhouse?) Puck's locker was the one every player surrounded at the All-Star Game. And why not? A clubhouse with Puck in it was always a happier place than one without him.

Unfortunately, a man who was always so happy did not end his life that way. Puck's stature fell considerably in recent years when he was charged with sexual assault for allegedly groping a woman in a restaurant bathroom. He wound up on the cover of Sports Illustrated along with a story filled with ugly tales about extramarital affairs. He was cleared of all charges from the alleged assault, but the damage to his image was done. -- Jim Caple

"Bonds testified that he had received and used clear and cream substances from his personal strength trainer, Greg Anderson, during the 2003 baseball season but was told they were the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a rubbing balm for arthritis, according to a transcript of his testimony reviewed by The Chronicle.

"And he said he was confident that his trainer hadn't slipped him banned drugs without his knowledge, saying Anderson "wouldn't jeopardize our friendship" by doing that."

Now, where did he admit using steroids?

I used a clear substance this morning. In fact, I used a cream, too. One went on my armpits and one went on my teeth. I'M A STEROID USER, TOO!!!!

BTW, check out this little nugget from the latest article:

"Bonds repeatedly has denied using performance-enhancing drugs, including in his reported testimony before the BALCO grand jury."

Nah, that cat hasn't been in the bag in a long time. Whether or not I/you/we/whoever suspects he did them is a different question from whether or not he admitted doing them.

Yah, lots of people get like three times as big/strong in their 30s and 40s than they were in their 20s. If anybody wants a laugh, check this out...
