This is interesting. According to the US Department of Education if you play basketball but not football you are a I-A school. If you play I-AA football then you are I-AA.

Here's Gonzaga, a tiny private school that doesn't even play football. Shouldn't they be I-AAA?

The US Department of Education has nothing to do with filling out the report, it's the AD, associate AD, or whoever else at the reporting school.

I thought the NCAA did away with the I-AAA nomenclature in 2004 or 2005??

Wow, Gonzaga and Xavier have athletic programs? Well if they are D-I without football they are I-AAA (for football).

I never understood the need for a subclassification of non-football schools. Why not just call them Division I? The AAA is completely unnecessary.

I never understood the need for a subclassification of non-football schools. Why not just call them Division I? The AAA is completely unnecessary.Seems when they talk about football they felt that each school needed a subclassification in D-I.
