The only problem with CCU is that we are inconsistent. We are a great team when we want to be. Someone observed that we play to the level of our competition, which I would agree. Hopefully the guys come to play for the last six regular season games, the Big South tourny, and the more than likely appearance in the NCAA's.

Lehigh knocked off Bucknell Saturday in the first round of the PL Playoffs to gain the privilege of facing the defending champs, Army. The Black Knights have been a real juggernaut the last few years, with this year no exception as they went 18-2 in the league with Lehigh a distant second at 12-8. Army won both games against the Mountainhawks Saturday and Sunday to advance to the NCAA's.

Western Kentucky (18 - 34) beats up on Austin Peay (35 - 18) 29 - 13 in Bowling Green yesterday. WKU scores 3 runs in the 1st, after the Top of the 4th Austin Peay was leading 8 - 4, the bottom half of the inning WKU scores 7 to make a 11 - 8 WKU lead. APSU cut the deficit to one at 11 - 10, then in the bottom half of the inning, WKU blew it wide open by sending 16 batters and scoring 13 runs to increase it to a 24 - 10 lead. APSU score 3 more in the 6th to make 24 - 13. WKU added 3 more in the bottom half to make it 27 - 13. WKU added two more in the 7th to make 29 - 13. APSU was blanked from the 7th inning on to be the final score. WKU got 21 hits for the game. The final series of the regular season will be against #19 Louisiana-Lafayette in Bowling Green.
This is the 1st time that I can brag about WKU's baseball team this season. Let me have this one. :D

UMass doesnt have a good team but does have a good player in Matt Torra. Rated number 20 of all college players by baseball america (http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/2005draft/drafttracker.html). I find it funny that I tried hitting off this kid when he pitched at Pittsfield High School (http://www.berkshireeagle.com/Stories/0,1413,101~6295~2870934,00.html).

Georgia Southern knocked off FAU last night 6-3, improving their record to 34-18. Final series of the year gets underway tomorrow @ Citadel (who used to be good but then got hurt...and are now almost well again)
Charleston....is really good. It's looking like GS will get an at-large bid to the regionals if we can beat Citadel. Two SoCon teams this year!! (SEC has 10.....what a joke)
Current RPI is #41....season high....#1

As far as the SoCon tourney goes, we all know WCU shows up. Won it 2 years ago against a GSU team that did not give up. Made it to the title last season as the #8. If someone other than GSU or CofC win it, the SoCon could get three teams in the NCAA's.

It won't happen. The NCAA will take a UGA team that might not even make it's own conference tourney over 3 SoCon teams.

The Big South could have three if Birmingham-Southern or somebody other than Coastal or Winthrop won the tournament. Considering both Coastal (18) and Winthrop (30) are top 30 in RPI it would be quite a shaft if either got left out.

I would have liked to have seen CofC host. It just further blurs the line between the 'big' programs and the smaller schools. Once the baseball stadium renovations are finished don't you think CCU will want to host a regional one year? Darn right.

I don't know all of the technical details, but I understand that a facility needs to be in good condition with a good number of seats. Our stadium is in good condition, but not a lot of seating. They hope to expand it to 3000 seats in the near future.

Call 'Em Champions! Furman Defeats Georgia Southern 5-4 To Win SoCon Tournament Title
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Furman scored four runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit en route to a 5-4 Southern Conference Tournament championship game victory over Georgia Southern Saturday evening a Joseph P. Riley Park.
The victory, Furman' seventh straight, capped an improbable run for the eighth-seed Paladins, who only qualified for the tournament by virtue of a three-game sweep of Davidson on the final weekend of the regular season. In tournament play, Furman knocked off top seed and nationally 20th-ranked College of Charleston 9-7 on Wednesday, No. 4 seed Elon 6-3 on Thursday, and No. 2 seed Georgia Southern twice, including a 4-1 decision Friday prior to tonight's decisive championship game.
The SoCon Tournament crown is the second for Furman, which first captured the championship in 1991 at Charleston's College Park. The Paladins will be making their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament play (1965, '69, '76, '91, and '05).
The victory also clinched only the third 30-win season in Furman baseball history

Well we have one winning streak of 8 this season, another of 7 (ongoing), and went 3-2 against the SEC. Streaky? Yeah. Lucky? Not so sure. Defense is part of the game, as is mental toughness. If one team makes a critical error it doesn't mean the other team was "lucky."
FU baseball has done much better in recent years... couple 30-win seasons, some guys drafted, etc. But without full funding it's hard to consistently put a winning team out there.
