Florida Gulf Coast University would have company within the Atlantic Sun with four conference members that field the sport.

Three Atlantic Sun Conference schools already have been or are preparing to enter an arena where Florida Gulf Coast University may eventually compete: the gridiron.

Two programs — Jacksonville and Campbell — field non-scholarship Football Championship Subdivision football programs, and Mercer decided to go forward with non-scholarship football last November that will start in 2013.

All three are small private schools. Mercer’s undergraduate population is 4,531. The others are under 4,000.

Kennesaw State’s situation more closely mirrors FGCU’s on the surface. With 22,500 students (about 10,000 more than FGCU), KSU has the third-largest student body in Georgia.
