Looks like former UMass coach Mark Whipple is going to get the UConn job:

AP source: UConn, Whipple in final negotiations

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A UConn athletic department official says the school and Mark Whipple are in the final stages of negotiations for the former University of Miami offensive coordinator to lead the Huskies football program.

The official says an announcement will not come before Thursday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the person is not authorized to release the information.

The 53-year-old Whipple was let go by Miami after Shannon was fired at the end of the season. He also coached UMass to the 1998 Division I-AA championship.

Whipple would replace Randy Edsall, who took the head coaching job at Maryland after leading UConn to an 8-5 season and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl, where the Huskies lost to Oklahoma 48-20.

Well, scratch that. UConn hires Paul Pasqualoni instead:

Hopefully Whipple will get his chance as an FBS head coach sooner rather than later--if not this year, then sometime in the future. (If UMass moves to the MAC as expected, I'd love to have him back.)
