Passed away today at age 86. He was a terrific announcer and so versatile - he did MLB and the World Series, the Rose Bowl, AFL football, the Super Bowl, the NCAA BB Championship, Olympic Hockey, and the American Sportsman - and did them all well.

Obits like these are making me feel old. Gowdy was a real 'comfortable' annoouncer who didn't 'force himself' on the listener. Like Chris Schenkel--man, we're losing all the old class acts...Is Jim McKay still alive? :(

He is, but he is in his 80's.

That generation of announcers were like a guest in your home - no bombast, but a great description of the action from a dependably knowledgable source. Another one of that generation was Bob Murphy, who announced the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Oklahoma football and did the Orange Bowl on NBC Radio for many years.

Gowdy was a master. He was as comfortable with baseball as he was with college football. R.I.P.
